Sciences)
About The University of Texas at El Paso:
Located on the culturally vibrant U.S.-Mexico border, UTEP was
founded in 1914 as the Texas School of Mines and Metallurgy, and
has grown into a dynamic urban university with over 25,000
students enrolled in 74 baccalaureate, 76 master's, and 22
doctoral programs. UTEP is nationally recognized for its
leadership role in changing the face of U.S. higher education. Its
student
body, which is approximately 80% Hispanic, mirrors the population
of the Paso del Norte region. As Texas and the United States become
increasingly diverse, UTEP is positioned to play a critical role
in ensuring that talented students of all backgrounds have the
opportunity to realize their potential.
The University has a rapidly growing research enterprise in the
sciences, engineering, health fields, and other areas, with
research expenditures exceeding $95 million per year. UTEP is a
member of the University of Texas System and ranks first
nationally in the number of Hispanic graduates in Business
Administration, Mathematics and Statistics, and Education, and
third among all U.S. colleges and universities in the total number
of bachelor's degrees awarded to Hispanics in all academic
disciplines. UTEP remains committed to advancing higher education
in the region and partners with the El Paso Community College to
push toward the state's goal that 60 percent of Texans aged 25-34
earn a degree or certificate by the year 2030
(http://www.60x30tx.com/).
El Paso is a highly livable, bicultural community of almost
700,000 people, which offers affordable homes and attractive
neighborhoods. Shielded by mountains on three sides, El Paso
experiences more than 300 days of sunshine annually, and residents
enjoy outdoor activities year-round. The city of El Paso is
adjacent to both the state of New Mexico and the country of
Mexico, making it a leading area for cultural diversity and border
health research. El Paso is the sixth largest city in Texas and
19th largest city in the United States. Its active arts and
culture community features the state's longest running symphony
orchestra, a nationally recognized chamber music festival, art
galleries, history museums, and a full schedule of seasonal
festivals and events. UTEP adds to the arts scene with an
award-winning dinner theater, music and dance productions,
contemporary and student art galleries, and a natural history
museum. For sports fans, the UTEP Miners offer exciting Division I
college athletics at Sun Bowl Stadium, the Don Haskins Center and
Kidd Field. Southwest University Park located in El Paso's lively
downtown is home to the El Paso Chihuahuas, the San Diego Padres
AAA baseball affiliate. In 2010 and 2018, El Paso received an
All-America City Award. As of January 2014, El Paso is
consistently ranked as one of the safest large cities in the U.S.
