[SIPTA] visas to attend US-based international conferences

Dear Friends, In many situations, when a conference is organized in the US, some presenters do not get their visas by the time of the conference and are, therefore, unable to participate. In some such cases, the visa is eventually granted, but it is too late for this particular conference. The National Academies of Sciences and professional organizations have been petitioning for changes in regulations which would make the process easier for scientists. However, while the current processes are in place, it is important to help scientists from outside the US properly estimate how long the visa approval process can last and what support material needs to be provided with the original applications to enhance this process. Here is such an information as provided by the American Mathematical Society (we cite from http://jointmathematicsmeetings.org/meetings/national/jmm2014/2160_faq) "Visa regulations are continually changing for travel to the United States. Visa applications may take from three to four months to process and require a personal interview, as well as specific personal information. International participants should view the important information about traveling to the U.S. found at sites.nationalacademies.org/pga/biso/visas/ and travel.state.gov/visa/visa_1750.html. ... If you discover you do need a visa, the National Academies website (see above) provides these tips for successful visa applications: * Visa applicants are expected to provide evidence that they are intending to return to their country of residence. Therefore, applicants should provide proof of "binding" or sufficient ties to their home country or permanent residence abroad. This may include documentation of the following: - family ties in home country or country of legal permanent residence - property ownership - bank accounts - employment contract or statement from employer stating that the position will continue when the employee returns; * Visa applications are more likely to be successful if done in a visitor's home country than in a third country; * Applicants should present their entire trip itinerary, including travel to any countries other than the United States, at the time of their visa application; * Include a letter of invitation from the meeting organizer or the U.S. host, specifying the subject, location and dates of the activity, and how travel and local expenses will be covered; * If travel plans will depend on early approval of the visa application, specify this at the time of the application; * Provide proof of professional scientific and/or educational status (students should provide a university transcript). The Statistics & Probability Group currently has 12 academic staff, 4 Postdoctoral researchers and 15 PhD students. Areas of particular research interest in Statistics include Bayesian Statistics (with specific expertise in Bayes Linear Methods), Foundations of Statistics and Decision Theory (with specific attention to generalized uncertainty quantification) and Applied Statistics (with specific attention to large-scale applications). These areas are combined in ongoing research in large-scale applications, in particular in the area of uncertainty in large-scale physical systems represented by computer models. SMCU was established in October 1996 with the aim of attracting commercial research and consultancy work to the Department and its members of staff, and with providing the Department with a focus for external liaison for outside and commercial organisations. These activities are core to the University’s stated mission, with respect to supporting the regional economy, commercialising research and enhancing the University’s research infrastructure. [SIPTA] Brazilian Meeting on Bayesian Statistics - Deadline approaching

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ EBEB 2014 (March 10-14) - 12th Brazilian Meeting on Bayesian Statistics CALL FOR PAPERS (Springer Proceedings in Mathematics & Statistics) DEADLINE: December 20, 2013 The Brazilian Meeting on Bayesian Statistics (EBEB) is in its twelfth edition. These meetings aim at strengthening the research on Bayesian methods and widening their application. They also provide an environment where Brazilian and international researchers collaborate, present their most recent developments and discuss on open problems. EBEB also allows graduate students to make contacts with experienced researchers. This year's meeting has a particular focus on discussing recent developments in the many viewpoints of Bayesian statistics, such as computational, theoretical, methodological and applied views. EBEB 2014 will take place in Atibaia, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil from March 10 to 14, in a beautiful country-side hotel (http://www.hotelfazendaatibaia.com.br/) specialized in horse riding. This is precisely one week after the famous Brazilian carnival. The venue is conveniently placed near Sao Paulo-Guarulhos international airport (40-minutes trip; the organization will coordinate means to help participants to reach the venue). Full papers accepted to the proceedings will be published in a book from the series "Springer Proceedings in Mathematics & Statistics" (http://www.springer.com/series/10533) Submissions must be formatted accordingly (more details are available online). Full papers (including figures and text) are limited to 10 pages in length. There are two paper submission tracks for EBEB (detailed below), even though accepted full papers appear in the proceedings regardless of their track.
