IPMU 2024 special session: Imprecision and uncertainty in image processing and analysis

*** Please communicate to whoever might be interested *** Dear colleagues, We are organising a special session on "Imprecision and uncertainty in image processing and analysis” to be held at the 20th International Conference on Information Processing and Management of Uncertainty in Knowledge-Based Systems (IPMU 2024) Lisbon (Portugal), July 22-26, 2024 (https://ipmu2024.inesc-id.pt/) Session topic and goal This session aims at gathering researchers interested and involved in uncertainty issues in processing and analysis of images, in various applications. The uncertainty (understood in a broad sense) considered here can pertain to data, to knowledge guiding their analysis, to processing steps and to the analysis results. Examples of possible topics include: * Representation models (including but not limited to deep learning ones), types of uncertainties (epistemic, aleatoric, impre-cision...). * Reasoning under uncertainties or conflict, approximate reasoning. * Integration of imprecision, uncertainty and inconsistency in the analysis process, either by repairing, by dealing with them (e.g. as metadata), by ignoring them, etc. * Evaluation of uncertain results, making them useful to the users. * Discussion about the necessity or opportunity to quantify uncertainty. * Applications involving some of the above topics The theoretical issues are at the core of many IPMU topics. Here the aimof the session would be to address them in the specific context of image analysis,and more generally spatial information processing Reviewing process All papers of the special session will undergo the same review and editing process as standard IPMU track papers. Call for papers Special Session on "THEORETICAL AND APPLIED ASPECTS OF IMPRECISE PROBABILITIES" to be held at the 20th International Conference on Information Processing and Management of Uncertainty in Knowledge-Based Systems (IPMU 2022) https://ipmu2024.inesc-id.pt/ Lisbon (Portugal), July 22-26, 2024 Session topic and goal This session is devoted to Imprecise Probability Theory. This theory involves all the mathematical models that can be used as more flexible tools than usual Probability Theory when the available information is scarce, vague or incomplete. It includes lower previsions, n-monotone capacities, belief functions, possibility measures, or non-additive measures, among others. This special session aims to include papers related to Imprecise Probabilities that either present a significant advance in the foundations or show potential applications in real problems. In addition, papers where the connection between imprecise probability theories and other fields such as fuzzy sets or game theory is emphasized are also welcome. These monthly events are open to anyone interested in IP, and will be followed by a Q&A and open discussion. They also provide an occasion for the community to meet, keep in touch and exchange between in-person events. The next seminar will take place on the 12th December (Tuesday). Daniel Kuhn is Professor of Operations Research at the College of Management of Technology at EPFL, where he holds the Chair of Risk Analytics and Optimization. Daniel Kuhn research interests cover a wide range of optimisation problems, with a specific interest in optimisation under uncertainty and distributionally robust optimisation, a topic that directly connects to handling sets of probabilities. On the 12th of December, at 15:00 paris time (up to 17:00, with a talk duration of 45min/1h), he will talk about "On the Interplay of Optimal Transport and Distributionally Robust Optimization”. Very well-known for his work on graphical models using imprecise probabilities, some of his most recent works explore the links between the notion of causality and imprecise probabilistic models. Falsifiability

Dear SIPTAnts, I’m not sure this is “news”, but I’d still like to raise a point. It’s for those of you who care to connect probability to the real world. The point is that science needs falsifiability. And purely probabilistic models aren’t really falsifiable, they’re at most improbable. This appears to be a major reason why we have all these theories of probability, and the related communities, and there’s no way to prove anyone wrong. Which is good for our careers, and less so with regard to progress. Contrast this with structural causal modelling. When we put forward a causal graph (a theory), any of its arcs is either right or wrong. This we can often test experimentally, or by other means. We correct the model, re-test and iterate, eventually consolidating our model of the world. Probability still plays a role there, although one of secondary importance. So it seems to me that the scientific method is based on causality rather than probability. I guess I’m not saying anything new. I just wanted to make the point; to me it seemed something worth reflecting on. Bests Marco
