Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) concerns the assessment of uncertainties and errors in complex mathematical models. Sources of uncertainty and error include uncertain model inputs, noisy data, incomplete knowledge of the model, and errors in numerical approximations. A variety of UQ methodologies have been developed by the Statistics and Applied Mathematics communities, often addressing similar problems from different perspectives, or using similar techniques but with different emphasis and nomenclature. This workshop will bring together leading researchers from both Statistics and Applied Mathematics for a series of introductory and tutorial presentations. The aim is to improve the understanding within each community of the others' research methods, and to identify common key challenges. The third community invested in UQ problems are the domain area experts and practitioners. The workshop will also include presentations from speakers from a variety of important application areas. The BELIEF and SMPS conferences are biennial events concerning the modeling of uncertainty. The BELIEF conferences are sponsored by the Belief Functions and Applications Society (BFAS) and are focused on the theory of belief functions, while the scope of SMPS covers the application of all approaches to uncertainty (including fuzzy and rough sets, imprecise probabilities, etc.) to statistics and data analysis. The co-location of the two events is intended to favor cross-fertilization among researchers active in both communities. This theory encompasses all the mathematical models that can be used as more flexible tools than usual Probability Theory when the available information is scarce, vague or incomplete. It includes lower previsions, n- monotone capacities, belief functions and possibility measures, among others. We would like to attract papers that discuss and solve foundational questions, or clearly demonstrate the usefulness of imprecise probabilistic models in an application. Designing systems that are reliable in the wild is essential for high stakes applications such as self-driving cars and automated surgical assistants. This workshop aims to bring together researchers in diverse areas such as reinforcement learning, human-robot interaction, game theory, cognitive science, and security to further the field of reliability in machine learning. We will focus on three aspects — robustness (to adversaries, distributional shift, model misspecification, corrupted data); awareness (of when a change has occurred, when the model might be miscalibrated, etc.);and adaptation (to new situations or objectives). We aim to consider each of these in the context of the complex human factors that impact the successful application or meaningful monitoring of any artificial intelligence technology. Together, these will aid us in designing and deploying reliable machine learning systems. We are seeking submissions that deal with the challenges of reliably applied machine learning techniques in the real world. Some possible questions touching on each of these categories are given below, though we also welcome submissions that do not directly fit into these categories. Robustness: How can we make a system robust to novel or potentially adversarial inputs? What are ways of handling model mis-specification or corrupted training data? What can be done if the training data is potentially a function of system behavior or of other agents in the environment (e.g. when collecting data on users that respond to changes in the system and might also behave strategically)? Awareness: How do we make a system aware of its environment and of its own limitations, so that it can recognize and signal when it is no longer able to make reliable predictions or decisions? Can it successfully identify “strange” inputs or situations and take appropriately conservative actions? How can it detect when changes in the environment have occurred that require re-training? How can it detect that its model might be mis-specified or poorly-calibrated? Adaptation: How can machine learning systems detect and adapt to changes in their environment, especially large changes (e.g. low overlap between train and test distributions, poor initial model assumptions, or shifts in the underlying prediction function)? How should an autonomous agent act when confronting radically new contexts? Monitoring: How can we monitor large-scale systems in order to judge if they are performing well? If things go wrong, what tools can help? Value Alignment: For systems with complex desiderata, how can we learn a value function that captures and balances all relevant considerations? How should a system act given uncertainty about its value function? Can we make sure that a system reflects the values of the humans who use it? Reward Hacking: How can we ensure that the objective of a system is immune to reward hacking? Reward hacking is a way that the system can attain high reward that was unintended by the system designer. Operatively, the prevision of a random quantity X is the amount that you accept to pay (resp., to receive) in order to receive (resp., to pay) an amount equal to the value which will be assumed by X. To make a prediction on X is just trying to specify a value that in your opinion will be assumed by X; this is very different from assigning a prevision, because it may be that the prevision of X is not a possible value of X, as it only belongs to the convex hull of the possible values of X. I don't have access to the book's full text here, so going back further in this line is for someone else. So, no, Walley did not initiate its use. This talk answers this criticism with a problem from the peer disagreement literature. The Preservation of Irrelevant Evidence (PIE) Principle maintains that a resolution strategy to peer disagreements should be able to preserve unanimous judgments of evidential irrelevance among the peers. It is well-known that no standard Bayesian resolution strategy satisfies the PIE Principle, and some -- such as Carl Wagner -- have argued so much the worse for PIE. In this paper we respond by giving a loss aversion argument in support of PIE and against Bayes. Both the ISIPTA symposia and the ECSQARU conferences are biennial events to discuss theory and practice of reasoning under uncertainty. While ISIPTA is especially focused on the field of imprecise probabilities, the scope of ECSQARU covers more generic qualitative and numeric uncertainty paradigms. The co location of the two events is intended to favor cross-fertilization among researches active in both communities. Perhaps it’s not necessary to list all possible sites that might be suitable for IP questions. Nevertheless, those who post IP questions on a StackExchange site can be encouraged to notify the list. I suppose there is benefit to trying to ask more questions on fewer sites, since multiple sites may be appropriate for some questions. There’s obviously some overlap between the scopes of some of the sites mentioned so far. Let's wait to see what the SIPTA Q&A > maintainers think. The Q&A and technical wiki (http://www.sipta.org/wikIP/pmwiki.php) were both initially set up to offer the community some collaborative online tools to collect information about IP. They are still up and running, and can easily be maintained, but are not currently promoted, for the reason that initial participation was quite low. Maybe it would be worthwhile to reactivate them for more IP specific questions, run them in parallel with stackexchange general, or more simply only use stackexchange platforms. In the meanwhile, you can also post your question on the Q&A website (I do not remember if we linked it to the mailing list in any way, but it may be a good idea to look if any question in the Q&A could be automatically redirected to this list).
