These sessions can be one of two formats: paper or panel. Paper sessions consist of a collection of talks and discussions (if appropriate) that share a common topic. A panel session has three to five panelists who provide commentary on a particular topic. I will work closely with David Dahl, the SBSS chair for JSM, to ensure that good Bayesian sessions are elected for the meeting. Proposals for topic-contributed sessions must be submitted to the online system by January 14, 2016. Dear colleagues, The Society for Imprecise Probability: Theories and Applications (SIPTA) organizes the 7th edition of its school in Durham, UK, during Aug 29 - Sep 2 2016. The school will be held at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Durham University, close to the city centre of Durham. The aim of the SIPTA schools is to introduce interested students and researchers to the basics of imprecise probability topics, both theoretical and applied. Some of the best specialists in different aspects of imprecise probabilities lecture, during one week, on the main concepts and techniques in their area of expertise, in a friendly environment favouring interactions between participants. The topics covered this year will provide a general introduction to the latest developments in imprecise probability theory. There will also be a focus on applications of imprecise probabilities in risk and related fields. Students will learn how to deal with situations where information is scarce, vague, or conflicting, and when a unique probability distribution may be hard to identify, from mathematical modelling to statistical inference and practical decision making. The last day of the school overlaps with the WPMSIIP workshop, and will give all participants the possibility to present their work in a seminar, with discussion time. We plan for several leading researchers to be present for the discussions, and we also expect that some of the topics the students work on will be of further interest to the WPMSIIP workshop. The special session offers a forum for all imprecise/interval probability related contributions at IPMU, while at the same time also setting a focus on (engineering) reliability applications. During the recent years, especially with the emerging of smart services and devices, technologies for managing uncertainty, inconsistency, vagueness, and preferences to tackle the problems of dynamic, real-world scenarios have started to play a key role also in other areas, such as information systems and the (Social or Semantic) Web. These application areas have sparked another wave of strong interest into formalisms and logics for dealing with uncertainty, inconsistency, vagueness, and preferences. Important examples are fuzzy and probabilistic approaches for description logics, or rule systems for handling vagueness and uncertainty in the Semantic Web, or formalisms for handling user preferences in the context of ontological knowledge in the Social Semantic Web. The aim of the special issue is to collect overview articles on important state-of-the-art formalisms and methodologies, as well as articles on emerging trends for the future. The Nordic Chapter of the Society for Risk Analysis in Europe and Lund University Centre of Risk Assessment and Management (LUCRAM) invite academics, practitioners and policy makers to participate in the 1st Nordic Chapter Risk Conference on the theme The Future of Risk Analysis in the Nordic Countries on November 16-17th 2015 in Lund, Sweden. The aim of the conference is to strengthen and vitalise risk research and education on risk in the Nordic region. There will be plenty of room for contributed talks (15 minutes including discussion) and for posters. Informal meetings are encouraged, and there will be ample space provided at different locations in the exhibition halls of the conference venue. The possibility to submit abstracts (maximum 300 words) for 15 minute presentations is now open. Dear SIPTA members, Please consider the call for papers below and forward to anybody you think might be interested. kind regards, cassio. --------------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS International Journal of Approximate Reasoning Special issue on Statistical and Computational methods for genomics and integrative genomics http://www.journals.elsevier.com/international-journal-of-approximate-reaso… Background and Scope: In the last decade, the advent of microarray and next-generation sequencing technologies has created the need of statistical and computational methodologies specifically developed for dealing with these types of data and novel biomedical research goals. Genomic data measure quantities (such as, gene-expression, copy number, genotype, methylation) at several thousands or millions of positions along the genome, resulting in an enormous amount of information from which to extract the relevant content. They are usually noisy and subject to uncertainties due to non-biological variations, which must be taken into account during the modelling and inferential processes. Many other issues arise when the field of application regards the study of complex genetic diseases, since patients can be highly heterogeneous and several different lesions may alter the same biological pathway. Moreover, the number of patients is usually small with respect to the number of variables, which brings another facet to the problem. Approaches that try to overcome all these difficulties rely on biological assumptions and integrate established knowledge and multiple types of data. Data integration may comprise not only different genomic data, but also clinical and other patient information. Combining all this information by an accurate biological and statistical modelling may allow us to achieve reliable biomedical discoveries. Inferential and computational issues must be also considered, as data have very high dimension and computational resources are limited. Papers are sought on theoretical and practical considerations involving statistical and computational approaches to address problems and data from the biomedical domain, including but not limited to: Next generation sequencing data Microarray data Data integration in genomics Genetic network modelling and inference Gene pattern discovery Disease classification and prediction Biomarker discovery Computational biology General methodological and algorithmic developments are also welcome as long as they have a clear applicability to the biomedical domain. Dear Friends, The deadline for IEEE Series of Symposia on Computational Intelligence SSCI'2015 (Cape Town, South Africa, December 7-10, 2015, http://ieee-ssci.org.za:8080/) has been extended to July 14, 2015. Many of these symposia are interested in papers using imprecise probabilities, for example, a symposium of Computational Intelligence in Engineering Solutions (CIES), where imprecise probabilities are listed as one of the highlighted topics.
