Brian Hill is Research Director at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and CNRS Research Professor in the Economics and Decision Sciences at HEC Paris. He is also Academic Director of the Inclusive Economy Centre in the Sustainability & Organizations Institute (S&O) at HEC Paris. He has been the recipient of the CNRS Bronze Medal for early-career researchers, one of the most prestigious French science award. One of his recent research programs has focused on what counts as a rational reaction to severe uncertainty or “ambiguity”. His research also focuses on important societal issues, such as how to reduce inequality and the role of uncertainty in environmental policies. ISIPTA 2025 - second call for paper

Dear colleagues, The deadline to submit long papers to ISIPTA, which is the 2nd of February, is fast approaching! The International Symposium on Imprecise Probabilities: Theories and Applications is the premier international event dedicated to the exploration of imprecise probabilities, providing a platform for both theoretical advancements and practical applications. ISIPTA also has a strong tradition of favouring discussions among its participants. To do so, accepted contributions will be presented and discussed in two separate sessions. The first session features presentations that are short and plenary. The second, longer session is devoted to detailed explanations and discussions that are face-to-face and rely on whichever medium you prefer – but having a poster is encouraged – so as to favour interaction among participants. ISIPTA will also welcome a number of renowned keynote speakers: • Carole Bernard (Grenoble École de Management & Vrije Universiteit Brussel) • Itzhak Gilboa (Hautes Études Commerciales de Paris) • Peter Grünwald (Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica & Leiden University) • Jan Obłój (University of Oxford) We invite contributions on all aspects of imprecise probabilities, a term encompassing a wide range of mathematical and statistical models that quantify uncertainty without the restriction of precise probabilities. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, sets of probability measures, partial preference orderings, game-theoretic probability, choice functions, interval probabilities, risk measures, nonlinear expectations, belief functions, and possibility theory. We accept two types of submissions: full papers and one-page abstracts. The submission deadlines are February 2nd, 2025 for full papers and April 27th, 2025 for one-page abstracts; additional important dates like notification of paper acceptance will be communicated in due course. Submission is through the EasyChair platform following the instructions on the conference website for formatting guidelines. All contributions will be made available on the conference website. Papers will be published in the Proceedings of Machine Learning Research, although authors have the option to opt out of publication. Registration is free for non-tenured scholars with accepted submission, and € 200 for tenured faculty with accepted submission. The school will be organized around a set of lectures by prominent researchers. Lectures will gradually tackle basic to more advanced theoretical concepts. Dear (young) colleagues, As every year, CNRS (and INRIA) is opening nation-wide positions in every field of science (for CNRS, INRIA focuses mostly on computer science and applied mathematics). For most people here, this would mean positions available in Philosophy, Economy, Mathematics and Computer Science, but maybe others. Those positions are permanent and full-time research positions, with a lot of flexibility in how you manage your time and activities. CNRS candidates typically have to produce a summary of past research and a research project for the next 5-10 years, and give three teams or laboratory (these have to be joint research units, but there are such research units in many places in France). For computer science, the official website is there: https://www.ins2i.cnrs.fr/en/cnrsinfo/researchers-competition-2025-list-pos… And you can fetch some useful info there: https://mathurinm.github.io/cnrs_inria_advice/ In computer science, recruited candidates are typically young researchers, i.e., having less than 7-8 years of research experience since the beginning of the PhD thesis (but there can be exceptions). This may change if you want to apply, e.g., in economy or philosophy, as every field has its particularities. If you wish to apply, you should try to identify and contact ASAP a laboratory in France where you would like to work (e.g., by just looking up in which laboratory is your favourite French researcher working), and contact them. Laboratories that have people dealing with imprecision in uncertainty or that would be interested in candidates working in these fields include mine, but also the CRIL (Lens), IRIT (Toulouse), GREGHEC and LAMSADE (Paris), and a couple others! We show that, when the lower probabilities are the lower envelopes of ε-contaminated sets, then our version of Monge's, and a restricted version of our Kantorovich's problems, coincide with their respective classical versions. We also give sufficient conditions for the existence of our version of Kantorovich's optimal plan, and for the two problems to be equivalent. As a byproduct, we show that for ε-contaminations the lower probability versions of Monge's and Kantorovich's optimal transport problems need not coincide. The applications of our results to Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence are also discussed. Bio: Michele is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence at The University of Manchester. He obtained his PhD in Statistics from Duke University, and worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Computer and Information Science of the University of Pennsylvania. His general interest is probabilistic machine learning, and in particular the use of imprecise probabilistic techniques to investigate the theory and methodology of uncertainty quantification in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. I will first introduce the field of “Imprecise Probabilistic Machine Learning”, from its inception to modern-day research and open problems, including motivations and clarifying examples. In the second part, I will present some recent results that I've derived on Imprecise Markov Processes. I will introduce the concept of an imprecise Markov semigroup Q. It is a tool that allows to represent ambiguity around both the initial and the transition probabilities of a Markov process via a compact collection of plausible Markov semigroups, each associated with a (different, plausible) Markov process. I will use techniques from geometry, functional analysis, and (high dimensional) probability to study the ergodic behavior of Q. I will show that, if the initial distribution of the Markov processes associated with the elements of Q is known and invariant, under some conditions that also involve the geometry of the state space, eventually the ambiguity around their transition probability fades. I call this property ergodicity of the imprecise Markov semigroup, and I will relate it to the classical notion of ergodicity. I will present ergodicity when the state space is Euclidean or a Riemannian manifold. The importance of my findings for the fields of machine learning and computer vision will also be discussed. (Apologies for multiple postings) Call for Contributions Weakly Supervised and Cautious Learning (WSCL) workshop Bridging machine learning and uncertainty management Workshop Information Co-located with the 27th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI 2024) Location: Santiago de Compostela, Spain Dates: 19-20th October 2024 Website: https://sites.google.com/unimib.it/wscl2024/ In recent years, machine learning (ML) has been increasingly applied in a variety of settings, with promise to analyze huge and heterogeneous volumes of data, improve decisional accuracy, and ease human labor. These systems have been predominantly built based on the supervised learning paradigm, which relies on the availability of huge amounts of data, assumed to be reliably labeled by human experts. However, with this increasing interest has also come the realization that the real-world is often far from the idealized perfection assumed in the supervised paradigm: data can be missing or noisy; supervision can be costly to obtain or have veracity issues; human users could fail at appropriating technologies based on ML, due to the incapability of ML models at reliably conveying their uncertainty. As a result, recently, increasing interest has been devoted to the development of techniques capable of dealing with these issues. These include uncertainty quantification and cautious learning, where the ML models convey to the users their uncertainty to improve reliability and reduce cognitive biases; as well as weakly supervised learning and its variants, such as incomplete supervision, where only a subset of training data is labeled; imprecise supervision, where the training data is coarse-grained labeled; and inaccurate supervision, where the labels are not always true. At the same time, due to the inherently multidisciplinary nature of these issues, there has been an increasingly deepened dialogue between ML and neighboring scientific fields, such as knowledge and uncertainty representation, as well as human-computer interaction, crowd-sourcing and active learning. The aim of this workshop is to explore how machine learning and related methods can handle weak supervision and provide more cautious and reliable support in the presence of data imperfection, as well as encourage broad discussion between ML researchers and experts in neighboring related fields whose underlying principles and foundations are central to allow the functioning of systems built on ML in less than perfect real-world settings. Topics of Interest We invite all researchers in AI and neighboring disciplines interested in the interplay between Machine Learning and Uncertainty to submit their work to WSCL workshop, which will be held during 19-20 October 2024, as a satellite event to the 27th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI 2024). We welcome submissions on topics related to both weakly supervised learning and uncertainty quantification. More generally, the topics of interest include: ● Weakly supervised learning (including, learning from noisy data, multi-instance learning, learning from imprecise data, ...); ● Uncertainty quantification (including, probabilistic and Bayesian machine learning, conformal prediction, three-way decision, set-valued approaches, possibilistic and evidential machine learning, ...); ● Uncertainty management and non-standard theories of uncertainty (including, foundations of probability theory, rough sets, fuzzy sets and possibility theory, evidence theory and belief functions, imprecise probabilities and credal sets, ...); ● Conformal prediction and related methods (including, Venn prediction, online learning, compression models, algorithmic information theory); ● Human-AI interaction and uncertainty communication; ● Active learning; ● Crowd-sourcing and data perspectivism Submission Instructions We welcome different types of submissions: ● full original papers (up to 7 pages); ● extended abstracts (up to 4 pages); ● already published work; ● review transfer for papers rejected at ECAI main track. Each accepted submission, irrespective of the type, will be assigned an oral presentation slot. Articles rejected at the main track of the ECAI 2024 conference, but relevant to the topics of interest of the workshop, may be transferred at the WSCL workshop based on the ECAI reviews. Eyke Hüllermeier is a full professor at the Institute of Informatics at LMU Munich, Germany, where he heads the Chair of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. His research interests are centered around methods and theoretical foundations of artificial intelligence, with a specific focus on machine learning and reasoning under uncertainty. He has published more than 300 articles on these topics in top-tier journals and major international conferences, and several of his contributions have been recognized with scientific awards. Professor Hüllermeier is President of the European Association for Data Science (EuADS) and Editor-in-Chief of Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery, one of the leading journals in the field of AI. Call for Contributions - WSCL @ ECAI 2024 Workshop (Last Reminder)

(Apologies for multiple postings) Call for Contributions Weakly Supervised and Cautious Learning (WSCL) Bridging machine learning and uncertainty management Workshop Information Co-located with the 27th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI 2024) Location: Santiago de Compostela, Spain Dates: 19-20th October 2024 Website: https://sites.google.com/unimib.it/wscl2024/ In recent years, machine learning (ML) has been increasingly applied in a variety of settings, with promise to analyze huge and heterogeneous volumes of data, improve decisional accuracy, and ease human labor. These systems have been predominantly built based on the supervised learning paradigm, which relies on the availability of huge amounts of data, assumed to be reliably labeled by human experts. However, with this increasing interest has also come the realization that the real-world is often far from the idealized perfection assumed in the supervised paradigm: data can be missing or noisy; supervision can be costly to obtain or have veracity issues; human users could fail at appropriating technologies based on ML, due to the incapability of ML models at reliably conveying their uncertainty. As a result, recently, increasing interest has been devoted to the development of techniques capable of dealing with these issues. These include uncertainty quantification and cautious learning, where the ML models convey to the users their uncertainty to improve reliability and reduce cognitive biases; as well as weakly supervised learning and its variants, such as incomplete supervision, where only a subset of training data is labeled; imprecise supervision, where the training data is coarse-grained labeled; and inaccurate supervision, where the labels are not always true. At the same time, due to the inherently multidisciplinary nature of these issues, there has been an increasingly deepened dialogue between ML and neighboring scientific fields, such as knowledge and uncertainty representation, as well as human-computer interaction, crowd-sourcing and active learning. The aim of this workshop is to explore how machine learning and related methods can handle weak supervision and provide more cautious and reliable support in the presence of data imperfection, as well as encourage broad discussion between ML researchers and experts in neighboring related fields whose underlying principles and foundations are central to allow the functioning of systems built on ML in less than perfect real-world settings. Call for Contributions - WSCL @ ECAI 2024 Workshop

Call for Contributions Weakly Supervised and Cautious Learning (WSCL) Bridging machine learning and uncertainty management Workshop Information Co-located with the 27th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI 2024) Location: Santiago de Compostela, Spain Dates: 19-20th October 2024 Website: https://sites.google.com/unimib.it/wscl2024/ In recent years, machine learning (ML) has been increasingly applied in a variety of settings, with promise to analyze huge and heterogeneous volumes of data, improve decisional accuracy, and ease human labor. These systems have been predominantly built based on the supervised learning paradigm, which relies on the availability of huge amounts of data, assumed to be reliably labeled by human experts. However, with this increasing interest has also come the realization that the real-world is often far from the idealized perfection assumed in the supervised paradigm: data can be missing or noisy; supervision can be costly to obtain or have veracity issues; human users could fail at appropriating technologies based on ML, due to the incapability of ML models at reliably conveying their uncertainty. As a result, recently, increasing interest has been devoted to the development of techniques capable of dealing with these issues. These include uncertainty quantification and cautious learning, where the ML models convey to the users their uncertainty to improve reliability and reduce cognitive biases; as well as weakly supervised learning and its variants, such as incomplete supervision, where only a subset of training data is labeled; imprecise supervision, where the training data is coarse-grained labeled; and inaccurate supervision, where the labels are not always true. At the same time, due to the inherently multidisciplinary nature of these issues, there has been an increasingly deepened dialogue between ML and neighboring scientific fields, such as knowledge and uncertainty representation, as well as human-computer interaction, crowd-sourcing and active learning. The aim of this workshop is to explore how machine learning and related methods can handle weak supervision and provide more cautious and reliable support in the presence of data imperfection, as well as encourage broad discussion between ML researchers and experts in neighboring related fields whose underlying principles and foundations are central to allow the functioning of systems built on ML in less than perfect real-world settings. Topics of Interest We invite all researchers in AI and neighboring disciplines interested in the interplay between Machine Learning and Uncertainty to submit their work to WSCL workshop, which will be held during 19-20 October 2024, as a satellite event to the 27th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI 2024). We welcome submissions on topics related to both weakly supervised learning and uncertainty quantification. My name is Stephanie Cohen, and I'm the Acquisitions Editor for Physical Sciences at Elsevier's STEM Education Textbook program, based in New York, NY. I was hoping to send out a call to your list-serv for individuals who would be interested in authoring a new textbook. Recently, I've been researching and gathering faculty feedback on a range of related courses in Statistics & Probability, so that I can better understand student and professor needs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as current resources. We have identified Probability & Statistics as an area where a new, carefully considered textbook may be empowering both for students and faculty, both here in the U.S. and globally. Currently a smattering of different textbooks appear to be in use. Currently, I am seeking potential author(s) for a title in this vein, as well as further feedback or suggestions, and would be very open to any thoughts you may have, or your own in involvement in authoring a textbook. There is certainly room for adjustments or textbook topics other than the proposed one above for a new textbook-happy to discuss! Thank you. The same deadline applies if you want to make use of our option to rent a private room for the duration of the summer school. * We have 5 grants available for (partially) covering your accommodation and transport costs. If you want to apply for one of these grants, you should do so by 10 April 2024. We remind you that the school’s aim is to introduce doctoral students – and other interested researchers – to the basics of imprecise probabilities, from its foundations in (applied) mathematics and logic to its applications in quantum physics, economy and AI. Date and location The SIPTA School 2024 takes place from Monday 12 to Friday 16 August 2024 in the wonderful city of Ghent, Belgium. For all other participants, the registration fee depends on the moment of registration. There is an early bird fee of € 100, which requires you to register before 15 April 2024. Short papers / Extended Abstracts IPMU will also accept short paper / extended abstracts of up to 4 pages. Short papers’ acceptance will be based on a 1-page abstract that will be checked for appropriateness and relevance. · The 1-page abstract must be submitted through EasyChair system, at the same link of regular papers<https://easychair.org/my/conference?conf=ipmu2024>. Do not enclose any attachment, edit the abstract directly in the online window of the EasyChair system. The biennial BELIEF conferences (sponsored by the Belief Functions and Applications Society https://www.bfasociety.org/) are dedicated to the confrontation of ideas, the reporting of recent achievements and the presentation of the wide range of applications of this theory. Previous editions of this conference series were held in Brest, France (2010); in Compiègne, France (2012); in Oxford, UK (2014); in Prague, Czech Republic (2016); in Compiègne, France (2018); in Shanghai, China (2021); and in Paris, France (2022). The Eighth International Conference on Belief Functions (BELIEF 2024) will be held in Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK, on September 2nd-4th, 2024. In addition to this, it also becomes of paramount importance to design and adopt models and methods that are inherently able to quantify their uncertainty in taking decisions based on conformal prediction. This, in turn, facilitates a reliable and Trustworthy deployment of machine learning and Artificial Intelligence models. While the application of Trustworthy and Explainable Artificial Intelligence has been extensively explored in diverse domains such as healthcare and finance, its implementation in communication networks has been relatively sparse, despite being considered of paramount importance. This workshop seeks to address this gap by shedding light on the potential applications of Trustworthy and Explainable AI in achieving transparent AI-based automation for networking.
