Ph.D. Position @Idsia in the area of Counterfactual Fairness and Causal Explainability Deadline: March 28, 2024 The Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA, idsia.ch) of Lugano (Switzerland) has an open position for a PhD student. This is a full-time (100%) position for a student active in the area of Counterfactual Fairness and Causal Explainability. The PhD research focuses on the fairness, explainability, and robustness of machine learning systems within the framework of causal counterfactual analysis using formalisms from probabilistic graphical models, probabilistic circuits, and structural causal models. The successful candidate holds a Master’s degree in Engineering or another STEM field (obtained or close to being obtained). Experience with Pytorch and proficiency in Python are optional but desirable skills. The starting date is May 2024 (or as can be arranged by mutual agreement). Lately, he has taken a keen interest in reasoning and uncertainty, notably by using imprecisely specified probabilistic information in temporal reasoning. In turn, I will explore how the statistical approaches to IPs allowed to start the field of Imprecise Probabilistic Machine Learning, and why such a field is of paramount importance in modern ML. I will provide plenty of references, together with some new results on the comparison between Conformal Prediction and Imprecise Probabilistic Machine Learning, and how the latter can be used to derive regions that are narrower than the conformal ones, while retaining the same probabilistic guarantees. A PhD is not required, but recommended. Previous background in AI and HCI is also highly recommended. About the Laboratory The MUDILAB at UNIMIB mainly focuses on the development and evaluation of decision support systems and eXplainable AI - human interaction protocols. Currently, the lab has two faculty members, three funded PhD students and two post-doc. The founders, the head Prof. Federico Cabitza and Prof. Davide Ciucci, have both been counted among the world's top 2% of researchers in AI and medical informatics for years, according to the list curated by Stanford researchers. The MUDI group has a recent track record of previous publications in prestigious venues (CHI, Interact, AAAI, ECAI, …) and research projects on both fundamental and application-oriented research, in collaborations with several hospitals and academic partners. The uncertainty (understood in a broad sense) considered here can pertain to data, to knowledge guiding their analysis, to processing steps and to the analysis results. Falsifiability

Dear SIPTAnts, I’m not sure this is “news”, but I’d still like to raise a point. It’s for those of you who care to connect probability to the real world. The point is that science needs falsifiability. And purely probabilistic models aren’t really falsifiable, they’re at most improbable. This appears to be a major reason why we have all these theories of probability, and the related communities, and there’s no way to prove anyone wrong. Which is good for our careers, and less so with regard to progress. Contrast this with structural causal modelling. When we put forward a causal graph (a theory), any of its arcs is either right or wrong. This we can often test experimentally, or by other means. We correct the model, re-test and iterate, eventually consolidating our model of the world. Probability still plays a role there, although one of secondary importance. So it seems to me that the scientific method is based on causality rather than probability. I guess I’m not saying anything new. I just wanted to make the point; to me it seemed something worth reflecting on. Bests Marco

European Workshop on Uncertainty in Machine Learning (WUML 2024)

Dear colleagues, on February 19-21, 2024, we are organizing the European “Workshop on Uncertainty in Machine Learning” (WUML 2024) in Munich, Germany. The last two editions of this workshop were held in Ghent in 2023 and Compiegne in 2021 with the last edition in Ghent attracting roughly 60 participants. With this email, we kindly invite you to attend WUML 2024. Like the previous workshop in Ghent, this is an informal event without a paper submission system. Every participant will have the choice to give a talk, present a poster, or just attend the workshop without a presentation. We have been able to collect some funding to cover the costs for coffee breaks and lunches, so we are happy to announce that attending the workshop will not involve any registration fee. Request for references on real-world applications of credal sets and interval expectation

Dear SIPTA Community, For a course on Uncertainty Representations and Reasoning, I'd like to compile a list of references (papers, book chapters, websites) which discuss (not necessarily as their main topic) real-world applications of credal sets and interval expectation (aka lower and upper previsions). With real-world, I mean those where the application was effectively put in practice. So not toy examples, or (possibly elaborately) worked out potential applications. It does include applications in other scientific domains and not just industry. The role of credal sets or interval expectation does not need to be ‘big’ or prominent, as long as it is there. I would be grateful if you could send me any such references in a private reply, and in particularly those about applications you were involved in yourself. The papers will get visibility among at least the students of the course, year after year. ;-) I will share the list I compile with others upon request. These monthly events are open to anyone interested in IP, and will be followed by a Q&A and open discussion. In the DFG funded Research Unit (FOR5455) “Deformation Analysis Based on Terrestrial Laser Scanner Measurements” (TLS-Defo, www.tlsdefo.de) relevant topics in TLS based deformation analysis will be investigated in a consortium of five universities (Uni Bonn, TU Munich, Leibniz University Hannover, KIT Karlsruhe, and TU Vienna). Project 5 "Distribution-free Uncertainty” will use intervals and sets to derive observation intervals for terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) measurements based on data analysis of terrestrial laser scans. As a matter of fact, the presence of inconsistent, incomplete, inaccurate or uncertain data may not only hamper problem modeling and solving, but also the process of explaining the solutions. More theoretical approaches, on the other hand, have provided graphical tools for principled knowledge representation and reasoning that are much more transparent than opaque real-world AI applications. Indeed, graphical models such as Bayesian networks, knowledge graphs and ontologies have long been used to facilitate the representation of and the reasoning with imperfect data. By providing a visual dimension, they contribute to increasing the understanding of the problem, and thus help practitioners, users (lay and expert) as well as engineers in designing solutions that improve trust, efficiency and transparency. The GRID workshop aims at bringing the applied and the theoretical approaches together for the benefit of both. Real-world applications can gain in explainability through the use of graphical models, while addressing the intrinsic challenges of poor quality data can improve the understanding and use of graphical models. Small workshops are often organised around one unifying theme, be it a methodological theme or a challenge. We here focus on both a methodological theme and a challenge. Our approach will bring together 1) a variety of methods drawing on graphical representation and 2) a variety of application domains dealing with different aspects of imperfect data. The varieties generate the necessary distance between approaches to provide opportunities for cross-pollination, while similarities of methods and domains make for a sufficient closeness guaranteeing mutual relevance.
