The workshop location is the Carl Friedrich von Siemens Stiftung, which is located at the Nymphenburg Palace in Munich. The workshop is financially supported by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and hosted by the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy. Progic 2013 focuses on "Combining probability and logic to solve philosophical problems". The theory of belief functions also referred to as evidence theory or Dempster-Shafer theory, was first introduced by Arthur P. Dempster in the context of statistical inference, and was later developed by Glenn Shafer as a general framework for modeling epistemic uncertainty. These early contributions have been the starting points of many important developments, including the Transferable Belief Model and the Theory of Hints. The theory of belief functions is now well established as a general framework for reasoning with uncertainty, and has well understood connections to other frameworks such as probability, possibility and imprecise probability theories. This theoretical framework has a broad field of application, including information fusion, pattern recognition, auditing, etc. The second BFAS spring school will take place at IHEC in the historical and magnificent city of Carthage in Tunisia. The aim of this spring school is to promote this theory and to introduce interested students and researchers to the basics of belief functions, both theoretical and applied. The school is organized into several lectures given by international experts. They will bring both theoretical and practical backgrounds, in a friendly environment favoring interaction between participants. ADT seeks to bring together researchers and practitioners coming from diverse areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Database Systems, Operations Research, Decision Theory, Discrete Mathematics, Game Theory, Multiagent systems, Computational Social Choice, and Theoretical Computer Science in order to improve the theory and practice of modern decision support and automation systems. The contemporary theory and practice of decision theory and decision analysis must account for the presence of massive databases containing data extracted from the web or via data mining, combinatorial structures, partial and/or uncertain information, and distributed, possibly interoperating decision makers, and the existence of masses of potential users on the web. Such problems arise in various real-world decision making problems such as electronic commerce, and recommender systems, network optimization (communication, transport, energy), risk assessment and management, e-government. ADT provides a multi-disciplinary forum for sharing knowledge in this area with a special focus on algorithmic issues in Decision Theory. The two first International Conference on Algorithmic Decision Theory (ADT 2009, 2011) brought together researchers and practitioners from diverse areas of computer science, economics, and operations research from around the globe, with proceedings published in LNAI 5783 and LNAI 6992. [Apologies for cross-posting] Website: http://www.maths.dur.ac.uk/users/matthias.troffaes/simride2013/ Registration: https://www.dur.ac.uk/conference.booking/details/?id=176 Registration deadline: 18 Feb 2013 Workshop: 18-21 March 2013 The Department of Mathematical Sciences and the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences, Durham University, organise a workshop on uncertainty quantification and data assimilation in numerical simulation of physical systems for risk-informed decision making; in short, simulation for risk-informed decisions, or SIMRIDE. The workshop will run from Monday 18 March until Thursday 21 March 2013. Key to solving many large industrial scale problems is assimilation of data along with real-time simulation of a physical system, combined with uncertainty quantification to allow risk-informed decisions to be made. Often these systems are highly non-linear and require vast computing power, which presents a serious challenge to assimilation of data in real-time, and to quantify uncertainty bounds resulting from model uncertainty and measurement error. A major aim of SIMRIDE is to facilitate the link between industry and academia. The workshop will consist of talks by people from both camps, with ample time for discussion in a relaxed environment. The themes of each day are as follows: * Monday: Risk & Decision (keynote by Simon Blake, ECS, UK) * Tuesday: Extreme Events (keynote by David Randell, Shell, UK) * Wednesday: Simulation (keynote by Michael Goldstein, Maths, Durham) * Thursday: Energy (keynote by Robert Jeffers, Idaho National Laboratory, US) A draft programme with confirmed speakers is available at: http://www.maths.dur.ac.uk/users/matthias.troffaes/simride2013/programme.ht… There will be a formal workshop dinner on Tuesday 19 March.
