PhD Opportunities in Foundations of Epistemic Uncertainty in Machine Learning at NTU Singapore

Dear SIPTA community, I am currently recruiting motivated and enthusiastic PhD students with a strong mathematical, statistical, or computer science background to join my group at the College of Computing & Data Science, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. The position starts in January (or August) 2026 and is fully funded. Our research focuses on the foundations of epistemic uncertainty in machine learning. The student will work closely with me on both mathematical theory and practical algorithm development, to build intelligent systems that not only make accurate predictions, but can also recognise their limitations and communicate what they know, and how well they know it, with clarity and confidence. Key topics include: imprecise probability, uncertainty quantification, information theory, ensemble methods, cooperative-game theory, and kernel methods. Dear SIPTA Members, The Manchester Centre for AI Fundamentals and Manchester's ELLIS Unit are co-hosting a series of seminars featuring expert researchers working in the fundamentals of AI. On 18 June, we are joined by Prof Theo Damoulas from the University of Warwick. Title: Distributionally Robust Optimisation with Bayesian Ambiguity Sets Bio: I am a Professor in Machine Learning and Data Science with a joint appointment in Computer Science and Statistics. I am a Turing AI Fellow (2021-2026) having received the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Turing AI Acceleration Fellowship in order to lead research on setting the Machine Learning Foundations of Digital Twins. I am an ELLIS member and also affiliated with New York University as a Visiting Exchange Professor at the Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP). My research interests are in probabilistic machine learning and Bayesian statistics with an emphasis on the study and integration of various forms of structure and inductive biases (structured priors, spatiotemporal dependencies, dynamics, compositions, physical laws, flows, causality, etc) while advancing robust and scalable approximate inference methodologies. My research has broad applications in Digital Twins, Bayesian nonparametrics and spatiotemporal problems in urban science and computational sustainability. I am the founder and PI of the cross-departmental Warwick Machine Learning Group and I lead two large projects at The Turing that are impact stories. Please consider joining! The first meeting was held in Turin in 2017. Since then, the meetings have taken place in Vietri sul Mare (2019), Bologna (2022), and Rome (2024). ######################################################### BFTA 2025 - Call for Participation The 7th School on Belief Functions and their Applications University of Granada, Granada, Spain October 19 — October 23, 2025 <https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fbfasociet…>https://bfasociety.org/BFTA2025/index.html ######################################################### The BELIEF school is a biennial event organized by the Belief Functions and Applications Society (BFAS) that offers a unique opportunity for students and researchers to learn about fundamental and advanced aspects of the theory of belief functions (also referred to as Dempster-Shafer theory, or evidence theory), a formalism for reasoning with uncertainty. The school will be organized around a set of lectures by prominent researchers. Lectures will gradually tackle basic to more advanced theoretical concepts. They will also highlight the links with other uncertainty theories such as random sets and possibility theory, and present applications of belief functions in various domains including machine learning, information fusion, statistical inference and materials science. Student early registration (which include the tuition fees, lunches, coffee breaks and the social event): 200€ Financial support: Financial support will be offered by BFAS and the journal of Artificial Intelligence to some students for attending the school. Grants will cover registration fees. An additional amount may also be granted to cover part of the travel or accommodation, depending on individual circumstances. ISIF members can ask for a 50% discount on the registration fee.
