ACM SIGMETRICS Doctoral Dissertation Award The SIGMETRICS Doctoral Dissertation award recognizes excellent thesis research by doctoral candidates in the field of performance evaluation analysis of computer systems. The award winner will receive a plaque, a $1,000 honorarium, and a complimentary registration to the ACM SIGMETRICS conference. The SIGMETRICS Doctoral Dissertation Award winner and up to two honorable mentions will be recognized at the annual ACM SIGMETRICS conference. *Eligibility:* - The final dissertation defense should take place at the nominee’s host institution during the 12 months prior to the submission deadline and not earlier than the previous submission deadline. Each submitted doctoral dissertation must be on a topic related to the measurement, modeling, analysis, and/or design of computing systems and networks. Of particular interest is work that presents new performance evaluation methods or that creatively applied previously developed methods to make predictions about, or gain insights into, key design tradeoffs in a variety of computing, networked, and cyber-physical systems. The determination of whether a thesis is in scope for the award will be made by the SIGMETRICS Doctoral Dissertation Award Committee. - An English-language version of the dissertation must be submitted with the nomination. - A dissertation can be nominated for both the SIGMETRICS Doctoral Dissertation Award and the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award. - A supervisor can nominate a maximum of two PhD students in the same year. *Important dates:* - Submission deadline: September 15, 2025. - Notification: November 15, 2025. *Submission procedure:* All nomination materials must be submitted electronically by the supervisor to the 2025 committee chair, Daniel Sadoc Menasche (sadoc(a)dcc.ufrj.br) Please use the subject line: "SIGMETRICS DDA 2025 [candidate name]". You will receive an acknowledgment of successful submission within one week of your email. Nominations must be received by the submission deadline and must be submitted in English. Late submissions will not be considered. Supervisors of co-supervised candidates should coordinate to ensure that only one nomination per candidate is submitted to the committee. Nominations for the award must include: - A statement summarizing the candidate’s PhD thesis contributions and potential impact, and justification of the nomination. Please address the candidate's involvement and contributions with the SIGMETRICS or Performance community. No more than two pages; - A list of papers published within the candidate's thesis; - A copy of the PhD thesis itself; - Two endorsement letters supporting the nomination including the significant PhD thesis contributions of the candidate. Each endorsement should be no longer than 2 pages with a clear specification of the nominee’s PhD thesis contributions and potential impact; - A concise statement (one sentence) of the PhD thesis contribution for which the award is being given. This statement will appear on the plaque and on the SIGMETRICS website. PDF format is required for all materials. The position starts in January (or August) 2026 and is fully funded. Our research focuses on the foundations of epistemic uncertainty in machine learning. The student will work closely with me on both mathematical theory and practical algorithm development, to build intelligent systems that not only make accurate predictions, but can also recognise their limitations and communicate what they know, and how well they know it, with clarity and confidence. Dear SIPTA Members, The Manchester Centre for AI Fundamentals and Manchester's ELLIS Unit are co-hosting a series of seminars featuring expert researchers working in the fundamentals of AI. On 18 June, we are joined by Prof Theo Damoulas from the University of Warwick. Title: Distributionally Robust Optimisation with Bayesian Ambiguity Sets Bio: I am a Professor in Machine Learning and Data Science with a joint appointment in Computer Science and Statistics. I am a Turing AI Fellow (2021-2026) having received the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Turing AI Acceleration Fellowship in order to lead research on setting the Machine Learning Foundations of Digital Twins. I am an ELLIS member and also affiliated with New York University as a Visiting Exchange Professor at the Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP). My research interests are in probabilistic machine learning and Bayesian statistics with an emphasis on the study and integration of various forms of structure and inductive biases (structured priors, spatiotemporal dependencies, dynamics, compositions, physical laws, flows, causality, etc) while advancing robust and scalable approximate inference methodologies. My research has broad applications in Digital Twins, Bayesian nonparametrics and spatiotemporal problems in urban science and computational sustainability. I am the founder and PI of the cross-departmental Warwick Machine Learning Group and I lead two large projects at The Turing that are impact stories. Please consider joining! ######################################################### BFTA 2025 - Call for Participation The 7th School on Belief Functions and their Applications University of Granada, Granada, Spain October 19 — October 23, 2025 <https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fbfasociet…>https://bfasociety.org/BFTA2025/index.html ######################################################### The BELIEF school is a biennial event organized by the Belief Functions and Applications Society (BFAS) that offers a unique opportunity for students and researchers to learn about fundamental and advanced aspects of the theory of belief functions (also referred to as Dempster-Shafer theory, or evidence theory), a formalism for reasoning with uncertainty. The school will be organized around a set of lectures by prominent researchers. Lectures will gradually tackle basic to more advanced theoretical concepts. They will also highlight the links with other uncertainty theories such as random sets and possibility theory, and present applications of belief functions in various domains including machine learning, information fusion, statistical inference and materials science. Student early registration (which include the tuition fees, lunches, coffee breaks and the social event): 200€ Financial support: Financial support will be offered by BFAS and the journal of Artificial Intelligence to some students for attending the school. Grants will cover registration fees. An additional amount may also be granted to cover part of the travel or accommodation, depending on individual circumstances. ISIF members can ask for a 50% discount on the registration fee. Dear colleagues, We are delighted to announce our upcoming SIPTA online seminar on imprecise probabilities (IP). These monthly events are open to anyone interested in IP, and will be followed by a Q&A and open discussion. They also provide an occasion for the community to meet, keep in touch and exchange between in-person events. The next seminar will take place on the 13th of May (Tuesday). Snow Zhang is currently assistant professor in the Department of Philosophy and a member of the Logic Group at the University of California, Berkeley. Snow Zhang research focuses on the foundations and philosophy of probability, with combination of (imprecise) probabilities being one of her privileged topic of investigation. On the 13th of May, at 15:00 CEST:paris time (up to 17:00 CEST, with a talk duration of 45min/1h), she will talk about "Probabilistic opinion pooling and imprecise probabilities”. Curious?
