Dear Friends, Today is the last day of the 9th International Conference of Thailand Econometric Society TES'2016. This conference was a big success, with a Nobelist Robert Engle giving the keynote talk. Next year's conference will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, January 11-13, 2017. Its main theme is robustness in econometrics. The main idea that we have only an approximate information about the corresponding probability distributions and about the values of the corresponding parameters. So, it is desirable to develop data processing, data analysis, and prediction techniques which are robust, i.e., in some reasonable sense, applicable not just to the nominal distributions and values, but also to possible deviations from these nominal values. This seems to be a perfect setting for imprecise probability techniques. Mark your calendars. P.S. As in the previous years, accepted papers will be published in an edited volume published by Springer-Verlag as part of the book series "Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing". P.P.S. Chiang Mai is a city in mountainous northern Thailand that dates back to the 1200s. Its Old City area still retains vestiges of walls and moats from its history as a cultural and religious center. It’s also home to hundreds of elaborate temples, including 14th-century Wat Phra Singh and 15th-century Wat Chedi Luang, adorned with carved serpents. Dear colleagues, The Society for Imprecise Probability: Theories and Applications (SIPTA) organizes the 7th edition of its school in Durham, UK, during Aug 29 - Sep 2 2016. The school will be held at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Durham University, close to the city centre of Durham. The aim of the SIPTA schools is to introduce interested students and researchers to the basics of imprecise probability topics, both theoretical and applied. Some of the best specialists in different aspects of imprecise probabilities lecture, during one week, on the main concepts and techniques in their area of expertise, in a friendly environment favouring interactions between participants. The topics covered this year will provide a general introduction to the latest developments in imprecise probability theory. There will also be a focus on applications of imprecise probabilities in risk and related fields. Students will learn how to deal with situations where information is scarce, vague, or conflicting, and when a unique probability distribution may be hard to identify, from mathematical modelling to statistical inference and practical decision making. The last day of the school overlaps with the WPMSIIP workshop, and will give all participants the possibility to present their work in a seminar, with discussion time. We plan for several leading researchers to be present for the discussions, and we also expect that some of the topics the students work on will be of further interest to the WPMSIIP workshop. Call for papers Special session "Uncertainty Quantification with Imprecise Probability" to be held at 16th International Conference on Information Processing and management of Uncertainty (IPMU 2016, www.ipmu2016.org) at Eindhoven, The Netherlands, June 20th - 24th, 2016. The special session offers a forum for all imprecise/interval probability related contributions at IPMU, while at the same time also setting a focus on (engineering) reliability applications. The session thus aims to link methodological research in imprecise probability to applications in reliability, in order to make, on the one hand, practitioners aware of recent developments, and on the other hand, make IP theorists aware of potential applications and which theory developments are needed from the application perspective. During the recent years, especially with the emerging of smart services and devices, technologies for managing uncertainty, inconsistency, vagueness, and preferences to tackle the problems of dynamic, real-world scenarios have started to play a key role also in other areas, such as information systems and the (Social or Semantic) Web. These application areas have sparked another wave of strong interest into formalisms and logics for dealing with uncertainty, inconsistency, vagueness, and preferences. Important examples are fuzzy and probabilistic approaches for description logics, or rule systems for handling vagueness and uncertainty in the Semantic Web, or formalisms for handling user preferences in the context of ontological knowledge in the Social Semantic Web. While scalability of these approaches is an important issue to be addressed, also the need for combining various of these approaches with each other or more classical ways of reasoning have become obvious (hybrid reasoning under uncertainty). The aim of the special issue is to collect overview articles on important state-of-the-art formalisms and methodologies, as well as articles on emerging trends for the future. Dear SIPTA members, Please consider the call for papers below and forward to anybody you think might be interested. kind regards, cassio. --------------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS International Journal of Approximate Reasoning Special issue on Statistical and Computational methods for genomics and integrative genomics http://www.journals.elsevier.com/international-journal-of-approximate-reaso… Background and Scope: In the last decade, the advent of microarray and next-generation sequencing technologies has created the need of statistical and computational methodologies specifically developed for dealing with these types of data and novel biomedical research goals. Genomic data measure quantities (such as, gene-expression, copy number, genotype, methylation) at several thousands or millions of positions along the genome, resulting in an enormous amount of information from which to extract the relevant content. They are usually noisy and subject to uncertainties due to non-biological variations, which must be taken into account during the modelling and inferential processes. Many other issues arise when the field of application regards the study of complex genetic diseases, since patients can be highly heterogeneous and several different lesions may alter the same biological pathway. Moreover, the number of patients is usually small with respect to the number of variables, which brings another facet to the problem. Approaches that try to overcome all these difficulties rely on biological assumptions and integrate established knowledge and multiple types of data. Data integration may comprise not only different genomic data, but also clinical and other patient information. Combining all this information by an accurate biological and statistical modelling may allow us to achieve reliable biomedical discoveries. Inferential and computational issues must be also considered, as data have very high dimension and computational resources are limited. Papers are sought on theoretical and practical considerations involving statistical and computational approaches to address problems and data from the biomedical domain, including but not limited to: Next generation sequencing data Microarray data Data integration in genomics Genetic network modelling and inference Gene pattern discovery Disease classification and prediction Biomarker discovery Computational biology General methodological and algorithmic developments are also welcome as long as they have a clear applicability to the biomedical domain. CALL FOR PAPERS International Journal of Approximate Reasoning Special issue on Statistical and Computational methods for genomics and integrative genomics http://www.journals.elsevier.com/international-journal-of-approximate-reaso… Background and Scope: In the last decade, the advent of microarray and next-generation sequencing technologies has created the need of statistical and computational methodologies specifically developed for dealing with these types of data and novel biomedical research goals. Genomic data measure quantities (such as, gene-expression, copy number, genotype, methylation) at several thousands or millions of positions along the genome, resulting in an enormous amount of information from which to extract the relevant content. They are usually noisy and subject to uncertainties due to non-biological variations, which must be taken into account during the modelling and inferential processes. Many other issues arise when the field of application regards the study of complex genetic diseases, since patients can be highly heterogeneous and several different lesions may alter the same biological pathway. Moreover, the number of patients is usually small with respect to the number of variables, which brings another facet to the problem. Approaches that try to overcome all these difficulties rely on biological assumptions and integrate established knowledge and multiple types of data. Data integration may comprise not only different genomic data, but also clinical and other patient information. Combining all this information by an accurate biological and statistical modelling may allow us to achieve reliable biomedical discoveries. Inferential and computational issues must be also considered, as data have very high dimension and computational resources are limited. Papers are sought on theoretical and practical considerations involving statistical and computational approaches to address problems and data from the biomedical domain, including but not limited to: Next generation sequencing data Microarray data Data integration in genomics Genetic network modelling and inference Gene pattern discovery Disease classification and prediction Biomarker discovery Computational biology General methodological and algorithmic developments are also welcome as long as they have a clear applicability to the biomedical domain. (http://jmlr.csail.mit.edu/proceedings) [SCOPE] Probabilistic multivariate models, such as Bayesian nets, MRFs, and others which are based on conditional independence assumptions, are important tools in machine learning and artificial intelligence for reasoning with uncertainty. The quantification of the parameters usually requires sharp (i.e., precise) assessments of the model potentials and might be subject to robustness issues. For instance, perturbations of some parameter values may lead to different decisions from those which would be achieved by the unperturbed model, suggesting that decisions are not reliable. Reliability might also be in question because of missing data and assumptions behind the process. The workshop invites submissions of papers on all aspects of sensitivity analysis and robustness in probabilistic models. Contributions may have a theoretical focus and/or an applied focus. Such guarantees can be provided if we use optimization techniques that provide automatic result verification. To provide desirable guarantees, we need to take into account that, due to measurement uncertainty, we only know approximate values of the numerical characteristics describing engineering systems. Often, the only information that we have about the measurement uncertainty is the upper bound on the measurement error; in such cases, all we know about the actual value of the corresponding characteristic is the interval containing this value. Techniques for processing such interval data -- interval computation and interval analysis - are powerful mathematical techniques applied in many areas including uncertainty modelling, constraint programming and numerical verification. Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to announce that the first Workshop on Uncertainty in Machine Learning (WUML) will take place in Compiègne, during the 15th and 16th June. It will be held in the Compiègne University of Technology. The major aim of the workshop is to stimulate discussion on ongoing researches, very recent developments and challenging open problems regarding the treatment of uncertainty in machine learning. Each of the two days of the workshop will consist of presentations covering a specific topic, while also leaving ample time for discussion. The first day will be devoted to the treatment of uncertain (e.g., missing, noisy, imprecise, …) data in the inference and learning process, while the second day will be devoted to uncertainty in the learned model and in the predictions (e.g., rejection strategies, indeterminate predictions, using sets of models, …). A gala dinner will also take place on the night of the first day. Everyone (PhD students as well as senior researchers) is welcome to participate and/or to present their views on these problems! They provide means to represent large multivariate domains compactly and to perform sophisticated learning and reasoning efficiently. The quantification of these models usually requires sharp (i.e., precise) assessments of the model local potentials and might be subject to robustness issues. IJCAI’15 Workshop on Sensitivity Analysis and Robustness in Probabilistic Graphical Models Buenos Aires, July 25-27, 2015 - http://ipg.idsia.ch/wijcai15/ SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS Probabilistic graphical models are important tools in machine learning and artificial intelligence for reasoning with uncertainty. They provide means to represent large multivariate domains compactly and to perform sophisticated learning and reasoning efficiently. Examples of probabilistic graphical models are Bayesian networks, Markov Random fields, chain and factor graphs, Gaussian graphical models, to name but a few. The quantification of these models usually requires sharp (i.e., precise) assessments of the model local potentials and might be subject to robustness issues. For instance, perturbations of some parameter values may lead to different decisions from those which would be achieved by the unperturbed model, suggesting that decisions are not reliable. Reliability might also be in question because of missing data and assumptions behind the process. The workshop invites submissions of papers on all aspects of sensitivity analysis and robustness in probabilistic graphical models. Contributions may have a theoretical focus and/or an applied focus. A non-exhaustive list of topics follows. - Local and/or global sensitivity analysis. - Parameter-based and/or decision-based sensitivity analysis. - Design of robust learning, inference and/or decision making approaches. - Robust analysis and design of robustness measurements. - Extensions of probabilistic graphical models. - Reliable qualitative learning and reasoning. - Robust treatment of missing data. - Imprecise probability and other theories related to sensitivity analysis. - Computational complexity, exact and approximate algorithms. Each submission will be reviewed by peers using a double-blind process (please use the third person in self citations and take all necessary care not to identify yourselves). Accepted papers will be published electronically in a volume of the JMLR Workshop and Conference Proceedings series. There will be no rebuttal phase, but contributions considered worth publishing and needing substantial revision might be subject to a second round of reviewing/evaluation. All accepted papers will be presented at the workshop. At least one of the paper's authors should register and attend the workshop to present the work. Submissions must be formatted according to style and template files available for the Journal of Machine Learning Research (JMLR) Workshop and Conference Proceedings - two-column version. Dear SIPTA list member, We are happy to announce the ** 8th Workshop on Principles and Methods of Statistical Inference with Interval Probability (WPMSIIP) ** to take place from ** Monday, 31st August, to Saturday, 5th September, 2015 in Munich, Germany. ** (See also maths.dur.ac.uk/stats/people/fc/wpmsiip.html for the previous workshops in this series and the successively updated workshop page at www.statistik.lmu.de/wpmsiip_2015/index.html.) The workshop follows the established WPMSIIP format and focuses on the informal discussion of ongoing research in imprecise probability and related topics. Thus it provides an ideal platform for stimulating exchange of ideas, including the opportunity for PhD students to present their first results to a wider, encouraging audience. The workshop week from Monday to Friday is roughly structured by (generally formulated) 'theme days', which are organized individually by two topic experts in the style they feel appropriate. On Saturday there will be a day excursion to a nice place nearby. Everyone is most welcome to participate and to present her/his views on one or more of the covered topics, on one or more days! We welcome any stimulating contribution, ranging from a 5 minutes sketch of some current idea or an unanswered question to a longer presentation of ongoing research or discussion panels on controversial issues. A full-time PhD Scholarship on Regression with Interval Data is available at the University of Hull, Department of Mathematics. Regression is one of the main methods of statistical analysis, widely used in all application fields. However, data are often not of the quality required in order to perform standard regression analyses. In particular, data are often interval-censored, meaning that data values are not known exactly, but only known to lie in particular intervals. The goal of the PhD project is to develop a well-founded general approach to regression with interval-censored data. The closing date for applications is 13 February 2015. IJCAI’15 Workshop on Sensitivity Analysis and Robustness in Probabilistic Graphical Models Buenos Aires, July 25-27, 2015 - http://ipg.idsia.ch/wijcai15/ FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS Probabilistic graphical models are important tools in machine learning and artificial intelligence for reasoning with uncertainty. They provide means to represent large multivariate domains compactly and to perform sophisticated learning and reasoning efficiently. Examples of probabilistic graphical models are Bayesian networks, Markov Random fields, chain and factor graphs, Gaussian graphical models, to name but a few. The quantification of these models usually requires sharp (i.e., precise) assessments of the model local potentials and might be subject to robustness issues. For instance, perturbations of some parameter values may lead to different decisions from those which would be achieved by the unperturbed model, suggesting that decisions are not reliable. Reliability might also be in question because of missing data and assumptions behind the process. The workshop invites submissions of papers on all aspects of sensitivity analysis and robustness in probabilistic graphical models. Contributions may have a theoretical focus and/or an applied focus. A non-exhaustive list of topics follows. - Local and/or global sensitivity analysis. - Parameter-based and/or decision-based sensitivity analysis. - Design of robust learning, inference and/or decision making approaches. - Robust analysis and design of robustness measurements. - Extensions of probabilistic graphical models. - Reliable qualitative learning and reasoning. - Robust treatment of missing data. - Imprecise probability and other theories related to sensitivity analysis. - Computational complexity, exact and approximate algorithms. Each submission will be reviewed by peers using a double-blind process (please use the third person in self citations and take all necessary care not to identify yourselves). Accepted papers will be published electronically in a volume of the JMLR Workshop and Conference Proceedings series. There will be no rebuttal phase, but contributions considered worth publishing and needing substantial revision might be subject to a second round of reviewing/evaluation. All accepted papers will be presented at the workshop. At least one of the paper's authors should register and attend the workshop to present the work. Submissions must be formatted according to style and template files available for the Journal of Machine Learning Research (JMLR) Workshop and Conference Proceedings - two-column version.
