Are you worried about the impact of the choice of prior in your Bayesian analysis? Are you interested in prior-data conflict and/or missing data? Do you want to learn how imprecise probability can help you making robust decisions under uncertainty? Then the SIPTA summer school is for you! The Society for Imprecise Probability: Theories and Applications (SIPTA) organizes the 7th edition of its school in Durham, UK, during Aug 29 - Sep 2 2016. The school will be held at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Durham University, close to the city centre of Durham. The aim of the SIPTA schools is to introduce interested students and researchers to the basics of imprecise probability topics, both theoretical and applied. Some of the best specialists in different aspects of imprecise probabilities lecture, during one week, on the main concepts and techniques in their area of expertise, in a friendly environment favouring interactions between participants. The topics covered this year will provide a general introduction to the latest developments in imprecise probability theory. There will also be a focus on applications of imprecise probabilities in risk analysis in engineering and environmental systems. Students will learn how to deal with situations where information is scarce, vague, or conflicting, and when a unique probability distribution may be hard to identify, from mathematical modelling to statistical inference and practical decision making. A basic understanding of probability and calculus are required (first year university level). A knowledge of Bayesian statistics is an advantage but is not required. PGM 2016 is the eight edition of the International Conference on Probabilistic Graphical Models. It will take place in Lugano (Switzerland) between the 6th and the 9th of September 2016. The conference website is http://pgm.idsia.ch. It welcomes contributions on all aspects of graphical models including probabilistic reasoning, decision making, learning and data mining. Both theoretical and applied contributions are welcome. He has served as Program and General Chair of the Conf. on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence, Area Chair of the Int. Joint Conf. on Artificial Intelligence, and as Associate Editor of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research and of the Journal of Approximate Reasoning, as well as of the Artificial Intelligence Journal. Adnan Darwiche is Professor and former Chairman of the Computer Science Department at UCLA. His research focuses on the theory and practice of symbolic and probabilistic reasoning, with recent applications to machine learning. He served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research (JAIR) and is an AAAI fellow. Guido Consonni is Professor of Statistics at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan, Italy. His current research topics are in the area of: model selection, graphical models and Bayesian networks, objective Bayesian analysis, models for high-dimensional data, hierarchical models. He is Chair of the Objective Bayes Section of the International Society for Bayesian Analysis (ISBA). Fabio G. Cozman is Professor at Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil. He works with probabilistic reasoning and machine learning, with a special interest in formalisms that extend probability theory. He has served as Program and General Chair of the Conf. on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence, Area Chair of the Int. Joint Conf. on Artificial Intelligence, and as Associate Editor of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research and of the Journal of Approximate Reasoning, as well as of the Artificial Intelligence Journal. Adnan Darwiche is Professor and former Chairman of the Computer Science Department at UCLA. His research focuses on the theory and practice of symbolic and probabilistic reasoning, with recent applications to machine learning. He served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research (JAIR) and is an AAAI fellow. Dear Friends, Today is the last day of the 9th International Conference of Thailand Econometric Society TES'2016. This conference was a big success, with a Nobelist Robert Engle giving the keynote talk. Next year's conference will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, January 11-13, 2017. Its main theme is robustness in econometrics. The main idea that we have only an approximate information about the corresponding probability distributions and about the values of the corresponding parameters. So, it is desirable to develop data processing, data analysis, and prediction techniques which are robust, i.e., in some reasonable sense, applicable not just to the nominal distributions and values, but also to possible deviations from these nominal values. This seems to be a perfect setting for imprecise probability techniques. Mark your calendars. P.S. As in the previous years, accepted papers will be published in an edited volume published by Springer-Verlag as part of the book series "Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing". P.P.S. Chiang Mai is a city in mountainous northern Thailand that dates back to the 1200s. Its Old City area still retains vestiges of walls and moats from its history as a cultural and religious center. Dear colleagues, The Society for Imprecise Probability: Theories and Applications (SIPTA) organizes the 7th edition of its school in Durham, UK, during Aug 29 - Sep 2 2016. The school will be held at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Durham University, close to the city centre of Durham. The aim of the SIPTA schools is to introduce interested students and researchers to the basics of imprecise probability topics, both theoretical and applied. Some of the best specialists in different aspects of imprecise probabilities lecture, during one week, on the main concepts and techniques in their area of expertise, in a friendly environment favouring interactions between participants. The topics covered this year will provide a general introduction to the latest developments in imprecise probability theory. There will also be a focus on applications of imprecise probabilities in risk and related fields. Students will learn how to deal with situations where information is scarce, vague, or conflicting, and when a unique probability distribution may be hard to identify, from mathematical modelling to statistical inference and practical decision making. The last day of the school overlaps with the WPMSIIP workshop, and will give all participants the possibility to present their work in a seminar, with discussion time. We plan for several leading researchers to be present for the discussions, and we also expect that some of the topics the students work on will be of further interest to the WPMSIIP workshop. During the recent years, especially with the emerging of smart services and devices, technologies for managing uncertainty, inconsistency, vagueness, and preferences to tackle the problems of dynamic, real-world scenarios have started to play a key role also in other areas, such as information systems and the (Social or Semantic) Web. These application areas have sparked another wave of strong interest into formalisms and logics for dealing with uncertainty, inconsistency, vagueness, and preferences. Important examples are fuzzy and probabilistic approaches for description logics, or rule systems for handling vagueness and uncertainty in the Semantic Web, or formalisms for handling user preferences in the context of ontological knowledge in the Social Semantic Web. While scalability of these approaches is an important issue to be addressed, also the need for combining various of these approaches with each other or more classical ways of reasoning have become obvious (hybrid reasoning under uncertainty). Dear SIPTA members, Please consider the call for papers below and forward to anybody you think might be interested. kind regards, cassio. --------------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS International Journal of Approximate Reasoning Special issue on Statistical and Computational methods for genomics and integrative genomics http://www.journals.elsevier.com/international-journal-of-approximate-reaso… Background and Scope: In the last decade, the advent of microarray and next-generation sequencing technologies has created the need of statistical and computational methodologies specifically developed for dealing with these types of data and novel biomedical research goals. Genomic data measure quantities (such as, gene-expression, copy number, genotype, methylation) at several thousands or millions of positions along the genome, resulting in an enormous amount of information from which to extract the relevant content. They are usually noisy and subject to uncertainties due to non-biological variations, which must be taken into account during the modelling and inferential processes. Many other issues arise when the field of application regards the study of complex genetic diseases, since patients can be highly heterogeneous and several different lesions may alter the same biological pathway. Moreover, the number of patients is usually small with respect to the number of variables, which brings another facet to the problem. Approaches that try to overcome all these difficulties rely on biological assumptions and integrate established knowledge and multiple types of data. Data integration may comprise not only different genomic data, but also clinical and other patient information. Combining all this information by an accurate biological and statistical modelling may allow us to achieve reliable biomedical discoveries. Inferential and computational issues must be also considered, as data have very high dimension and computational resources are limited. Papers are sought on theoretical and practical considerations involving statistical and computational approaches to address problems and data from the biomedical domain, including but not limited to: Next generation sequencing data Microarray data Data integration in genomics Genetic network modelling and inference Gene pattern discovery Disease classification and prediction Biomarker discovery Computational biology General methodological and algorithmic developments are also welcome as long as they have a clear applicability to the biomedical domain. URSW 2015 CALL FOR PAPERS 11th International Workshop on Uncertainty Reasoning for the Semantic Web http://c4i.gmu.edu/ursw/2015 In conjunction with the 14th International Semantic Web Conference Bethlehem, PA - US October 11 or 12, 2015 You are invited to participate in the upcoming workshop on Uncertainty Reasoning for the Semantic Web (URSW), to be held as part of the 14th International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC) in October 11-15, 2015 Bethlehem, PA - US . ISWC is a major international forum for presenting visionary research on all aspects of the Semantic Web. The Uncertainty Reasoning workshop is an exciting opportunity for collaboration and cross-fertilization between the uncertainty reasoning community and the Semantic Web / Linked Data community. Effective methods for reasoning under uncertainty are vital for realizing many aspects of the Semantic Web vision, but the ability of current-generation web technology to handle uncertainty remains extremely limited. Thus, there is a continuing demand for uncertainty reasoning technology among Semantic Web researchers and developers, and the URSW workshop creates a unique opening to bring together two communities with a clear commonality of interest but limited history of interaction. By capitalizing on this opportunity, URSW could spark dramatic progress toward realizing the Semantic Web vision. CALL FOR PAPERS International Journal of Approximate Reasoning Special issue on Statistical and Computational methods for genomics and integrative genomics http://www.journals.elsevier.com/international-journal-of-approximate-reaso… Background and Scope: In the last decade, the advent of microarray and next-generation sequencing technologies has created the need of statistical and computational methodologies specifically developed for dealing with these types of data and novel biomedical research goals. Genomic data measure quantities (such as, gene-expression, copy number, genotype, methylation) at several thousands or millions of positions along the genome, resulting in an enormous amount of information from which to extract the relevant content. They are usually noisy and subject to uncertainties due to non-biological variations, which must be taken into account during the modelling and inferential processes. Many other issues arise when the field of application regards the study of complex genetic diseases, since patients can be highly heterogeneous and several different lesions may alter the same biological pathway. Moreover, the number of patients is usually small with respect to the number of variables, which brings another facet to the problem. Approaches that try to overcome all these difficulties rely on biological assumptions and integrate established knowledge and multiple types of data. Data integration may comprise not only different genomic data, but also clinical and other patient information. Combining all this information by an accurate biological and statistical modelling may allow us to achieve reliable biomedical discoveries. Inferential and computational issues must be also considered, as data have very high dimension and computational resources are limited. Papers are sought on theoretical and practical considerations involving statistical and computational approaches to address problems and data from the biomedical domain, including but not limited to: Next generation sequencing data Microarray data Data integration in genomics Genetic network modelling and inference Gene pattern discovery Disease classification and prediction Biomarker discovery Computational biology General methodological and algorithmic developments are also welcome as long as they have a clear applicability to the biomedical domain. (http://jmlr.csail.mit.edu/proceedings) [SCOPE] Probabilistic multivariate models, such as Bayesian nets, MRFs, and others which are based on conditional independence assumptions, are important tools in machine learning and artificial intelligence for reasoning with uncertainty. The quantification of the parameters usually requires sharp (i.e., precise) assessments of the model potentials and might be subject to robustness issues. For instance, perturbations of some parameter values may lead to different decisions from those which would be achieved by the unperturbed model, suggesting that decisions are not reliable. Reliability might also be in question because of missing data and assumptions behind the process. The workshop invites submissions of papers on all aspects of sensitivity analysis and robustness in probabilistic models. Contributions may have a theoretical focus and/or an applied focus. A non-exhaustive list of topics follows. - Local and/or global sensitivity analysis. - Parameter-based and/or decision-based sensitivity analysis. - Design of robust learning, inference and/or decision making approaches. - Robust analysis and design of robustness measurements. - Reliable qualitative learning and reasoning. - Robust treatment of missing data. - Imprecise probability and other theories related to sensitivity analysis. - Computational complexity, exact and approximate algorithms. Such guarantees can be provided if we use optimization techniques that provide automatic result verification. To provide desirable guarantees, we need to take into account that, due to measurement uncertainty, we only know approximate values of the numerical characteristics describing engineering systems. Often, the only information that we have about the measurement uncertainty is the upper bound on the measurement error; in such cases, all we know about the actual value of the corresponding characteristic is the interval containing this value. Techniques for processing such interval data -- interval computation and interval analysis - are powerful mathematical techniques applied in many areas including uncertainty modelling, constraint programming and numerical verification. These techniques are often the essential ingredients for developing robust, reliable and efficient algorithms in optimization. The aim of this special issue is to bring together contributions in engineering optimization and Operations Research that use interval approach (and other techniques with automatic results verification) as the main or auxiliary mathematical tool. Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to announce that the first Workshop on Uncertainty in Machine Learning (WUML) will take place in Compiègne, during the 15th and 16th June. It will be held in the Compiègne University of Technology. The major aim of the workshop is to stimulate discussion on ongoing researches, very recent developments and challenging open problems regarding the treatment of uncertainty in machine learning. Each of the two days of the workshop will consist of presentations covering a specific topic, while also leaving ample time for discussion. The first day will be devoted to the treatment of uncertain (e.g., missing, noisy, imprecise, …) data in the inference and learning process, while the second day will be devoted to uncertainty in the learned model and in the predictions (e.g., rejection strategies, indeterminate predictions, using sets of models, …). A gala dinner will also take place on the night of the first day. Everyone (PhD students as well as senior researchers) is welcome to participate and/or to present their views on these problems! The aim of PRUV is to bring together people from different communities (such as the Artificial Intelligence and the Semantic Web community, among others), including theorists and practitioners, working on logics for reasoning about preferences, uncertainty, and vagueness. Making researchers aware of and fruitfully discuss the most recent application areas, new challenges and the existing body of work on logics for reasoning about preferences, uncertainty, and vagueness, respectively is the main goal of the meeting. After a successful workshop, the IfCoLog Journal of Logics and their Applications now invites submissions to a special issue on the topics of PRUV. == Submission Deadline == ** June 21st, 2015 ** == TOPICS == We welcome submissions relating logic with preferences, uncertainty and vagueness. (http://jmlr.csail.mit.edu/proceedings) [SCOPE] Probabilistic graphical models are important tools in machine learning and artificial intelligence for reasoning with uncertainty. They provide means to represent large multivariate domains compactly and to perform sophisticated learning and reasoning efficiently. Examples of probabilistic graphical models are Bayesian networks, Markov Random fields, chain and factor graphs, Gaussian graphical models, to name but a few. The quantification of these models usually requires sharp (i.e., precise) assessments of the model local potentials and might be subject to robustness issues. For instance, perturbations of some parameter values may lead to different decisions from those which would be achieved by the unperturbed model, suggesting that decisions are not reliable. Reliability might also be in question because of missing data and assumptions behind the process. The workshop invites submissions of papers on all aspects of sensitivity analysis and robustness in probabilistic graphical models. Contributions may have a theoretical focus and/or an applied focus. A non-exhaustive list of topics follows. - Local and/or global sensitivity analysis. - Parameter-based and/or decision-based sensitivity analysis. - Design of robust learning, inference and/or decision making approaches. - Robust analysis and design of robustness measurements. - Extensions of probabilistic graphical models. - Reliable qualitative learning and reasoning. - Robust treatment of missing data. - Imprecise probability and other theories related to sensitivity analysis. - Computational complexity, exact and approximate algorithms. Papers about more general robust multivariate models based on independence or othr structural judgements are also welcome. [SUBMISSIONS] Each submission will be reviewed by peers using a double-blind process (please use the third person in self citations and take all necessary care not to identify yourselves). Accepted papers will be published electronically in a volume of the JMLR Workshop and Conference Proceedings series. There will be no rebuttal phase, but contributions considered worth publishing and needing substantial revision might be subject to a second round of reviewing/evaluation. All accepted papers will be presented at the workshop. At least one of the paper's authors should register and attend the workshop to present the work. Submissions must be formatted according to style and template files available for the Journal of Machine Learning Research (JMLR) Workshop and Conference Proceedings - two-column version.
