Call for papers Special session "Uncertainty Quantification with Imprecise Probability" to be held at 16th International Conference on Information Processing and management of Uncertainty (IPMU 2016, www.ipmu2016.org) at Eindhoven, The Netherlands, June 20th - 24th, 2016. The special session offers a forum for all imprecise/interval probability related contributions at IPMU, while at the same time also setting a focus on (engineering) reliability applications. The session thus aims to link methodological research in imprecise probability to applications in reliability, in order to make, on the one hand, practitioners aware of recent developments, and on the other hand, make IP theorists aware of potential applications and which theory developments are needed from the application perspective. The session also links up thematically with the workshop "Reliable Engineering Computing" (REC 2016, rec.2016.rub.de), which takes place in nearby Bochum (Germany) in the week before IPMU. Papers submitted to the special session will undergo the IPMU reviewing process. During the recent years, especially with the emerging of smart services and devices, technologies for managing uncertainty, inconsistency, vagueness, and preferences to tackle the problems of dynamic, real-world scenarios have started to play a key role also in other areas, such as information systems and the (Social or Semantic) Web. These application areas have sparked another wave of strong interest into formalisms and logics for dealing with uncertainty, inconsistency, vagueness, and preferences. Important examples are fuzzy and probabilistic approaches for description logics, or rule systems for handling vagueness and uncertainty in the Semantic Web, or formalisms for handling user preferences in the context of ontological knowledge in the Social Semantic Web. While scalability of these approaches is an important issue to be addressed, also the need for combining various of these approaches with each other or more classical ways of reasoning have become obvious (hybrid reasoning under uncertainty). The aim of the special issue is to collect overview articles on important state-of-the-art formalisms and methodologies, as well as articles on emerging trends for the future. TOPICS Submissions are solicited in all areas of uncertainty, inconsistency, vagueness, and preferences handling, including (but not restricted to) the topics listed below: - logics of uncertain and vague reasoning, such as probability logic, possibilistic logic, and fuzzy logic - reasoning with inconsistent knowledge, paraconsistent logics - rough sets and similarity measures - formal models and semantics of uncertain data - spatio-temporal uncertainty management - uncertainty and inconsistency in the (Semantic) Web - changes and merging of ontologies - preference formalisms and user preferences - data sharing and uncertainty - recommender systems - connections to information retrieval, data mining, and machine learning - applications, in particular to mobile systems and social networks The special issue welcomes especially submissions that combine different approaches of uncertain reasoning, or that elaborate on connections of uncertain reasoning to other fields. PGM 2016 will take place in Lugano (Switzerland) between the 6th and the 9th of September 2016. The site of the conference is http://pgm.idsia.ch. The conference provides a high quality forum regarding the latest developments in probabilistic graphical models. We welcome contributions on topics such as: *Bayesian (belief) networks, chain graphs, Markov random fields, decision networks, influence diagrams and other probabilistic graphical models (PGMs); *Information processing in PGMs (exact and approximate inference, sensitivity analysis, etc.); *Learning and data mining with PGMs; *Links between PGMs and statistics, information theory, optimization, and decision making under uncertainty; *Softwares based on PGMs; *Applications of PGMs to real-world problems. Dear SIPTA members, Please consider the call for papers below and forward to anybody you think might be interested. kind regards, cassio. --------------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS International Journal of Approximate Reasoning Special issue on Statistical and Computational methods for genomics and integrative genomics http://www.journals.elsevier.com/international-journal-of-approximate-reaso… Background and Scope: In the last decade, the advent of microarray and next-generation sequencing technologies has created the need of statistical and computational methodologies specifically developed for dealing with these types of data and novel biomedical research goals. Genomic data measure quantities (such as, gene-expression, copy number, genotype, methylation) at several thousands or millions of positions along the genome, resulting in an enormous amount of information from which to extract the relevant content. They are usually noisy and subject to uncertainties due to non-biological variations, which must be taken into account during the modelling and inferential processes. Many other issues arise when the field of application regards the study of complex genetic diseases, since patients can be highly heterogeneous and several different lesions may alter the same biological pathway. Moreover, the number of patients is usually small with respect to the number of variables, which brings another facet to the problem. Approaches that try to overcome all these difficulties rely on biological assumptions and integrate established knowledge and multiple types of data. Data integration may comprise not only different genomic data, but also clinical and other patient information. Combining all this information by an accurate biological and statistical modelling may allow us to achieve reliable biomedical discoveries. Inferential and computational issues must be also considered, as data have very high dimension and computational resources are limited. Papers are sought on theoretical and practical considerations involving statistical and computational approaches to address problems and data from the biomedical domain, including but not limited to: Next generation sequencing data Microarray data Data integration in genomics Genetic network modelling and inference Gene pattern discovery Disease classification and prediction Biomarker discovery Computational biology General methodological and algorithmic developments are also welcome as long as they have a clear applicability to the biomedical domain. URSW 2015 CALL FOR PAPERS 11th International Workshop on Uncertainty Reasoning for the Semantic Web http://c4i.gmu.edu/ursw/2015 In conjunction with the 14th International Semantic Web Conference Bethlehem, PA - US October 11 or 12, 2015 You are invited to participate in the upcoming workshop on Uncertainty Reasoning for the Semantic Web (URSW), to be held as part of the 14th International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC) in October 11-15, 2015 Bethlehem, PA - US . ISWC is a major international forum for presenting visionary research on all aspects of the Semantic Web. The Uncertainty Reasoning workshop is an exciting opportunity for collaboration and cross-fertilization between the uncertainty reasoning community and the Semantic Web / Linked Data community. Effective methods for reasoning under uncertainty are vital for realizing many aspects of the Semantic Web vision, but the ability of current-generation web technology to handle uncertainty remains extremely limited. CALL FOR PAPERS International Journal of Approximate Reasoning Special issue on Statistical and Computational methods for genomics and integrative genomics http://www.journals.elsevier.com/international-journal-of-approximate-reaso… Background and Scope: In the last decade, the advent of microarray and next-generation sequencing technologies has created the need of statistical and computational methodologies specifically developed for dealing with these types of data and novel biomedical research goals. Genomic data measure quantities (such as, gene-expression, copy number, genotype, methylation) at several thousands or millions of positions along the genome, resulting in an enormous amount of information from which to extract the relevant content. They are usually noisy and subject to uncertainties due to non-biological variations, which must be taken into account during the modelling and inferential processes. Many other issues arise when the field of application regards the study of complex genetic diseases, since patients can be highly heterogeneous and several different lesions may alter the same biological pathway. Moreover, the number of patients is usually small with respect to the number of variables, which brings another facet to the problem. Approaches that try to overcome all these difficulties rely on biological assumptions and integrate established knowledge and multiple types of data. Data integration may comprise not only different genomic data, but also clinical and other patient information. Combining all this information by an accurate biological and statistical modelling may allow us to achieve reliable biomedical discoveries. Inferential and computational issues must be also considered, as data have very high dimension and computational resources are limited. Papers are sought on theoretical and practical considerations involving statistical and computational approaches to address problems and data from the biomedical domain, including but not limited to: Next generation sequencing data Microarray data Data integration in genomics Genetic network modelling and inference Gene pattern discovery Disease classification and prediction Biomarker discovery Computational biology General methodological and algorithmic developments are also welcome as long as they have a clear applicability to the biomedical domain. (http://jmlr.csail.mit.edu/proceedings) [SCOPE] Probabilistic multivariate models, such as Bayesian nets, MRFs, and others which are based on conditional independence assumptions, are important tools in machine learning and artificial intelligence for reasoning with uncertainty. The quantification of the parameters usually requires sharp (i.e., precise) assessments of the model potentials and might be subject to robustness issues. For instance, perturbations of some parameter values may lead to different decisions from those which would be achieved by the unperturbed model, suggesting that decisions are not reliable. Reliability might also be in question because of missing data and assumptions behind the process. The workshop invites submissions of papers on all aspects of sensitivity analysis and robustness in probabilistic models. Contributions may have a theoretical focus and/or an applied focus. Such guarantees can be provided if we use optimization techniques that provide automatic result verification. To provide desirable guarantees, we need to take into account that, due to measurement uncertainty, we only know approximate values of the numerical characteristics describing engineering systems. Often, the only information that we have about the measurement uncertainty is the upper bound on the measurement error; in such cases, all we know about the actual value of the corresponding characteristic is the interval containing this value. Techniques for processing such interval data -- interval computation and interval analysis - are powerful mathematical techniques applied in many areas including uncertainty modelling, constraint programming and numerical verification. These techniques are often the essential ingredients for developing robust, reliable and efficient algorithms in optimization. The aim of this special issue is to bring together contributions in engineering optimization and Operations Research that use interval approach (and other techniques with automatic results verification) as the main or auxiliary mathematical tool. Contributions in closely related areas, however, are encouraged as well. Welcome are contributions to theory, algorithms, and/or applications. Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to announce that the first Workshop on Uncertainty in Machine Learning (WUML) will take place in Compiègne, during the 15th and 16th June. It will be held in the Compiègne University of Technology. The major aim of the workshop is to stimulate discussion on ongoing researches, very recent developments and challenging open problems regarding the treatment of uncertainty in machine learning. Each of the two days of the workshop will consist of presentations covering a specific topic, while also leaving ample time for discussion. The first day will be devoted to the treatment of uncertain (e.g., missing, noisy, imprecise, …) data in the inference and learning process, while the second day will be devoted to uncertainty in the learned model and in the predictions (e.g., rejection strategies, indeterminate predictions, using sets of models, …). A gala dinner will also take place on the night of the first day. Everyone (PhD students as well as senior researchers) is welcome to participate and/or to present their views on these problems! Dear SIPTA list member, We are happy to announce the ** 8th Workshop on Principles and Methods of Statistical Inference with Interval Probability (WPMSIIP) ** to take place from ** Monday, 31st August, to Saturday, 5th September, 2015 in Munich, Germany. ** (See also maths.dur.ac.uk/stats/people/fc/wpmsiip.html for the previous workshops in this series and the successively updated workshop page at www.statistik.lmu.de/wpmsiip_2015/index.html.) The workshop follows the established WPMSIIP format and focuses on the informal discussion of ongoing research in imprecise probability and related topics. Thus it provides an ideal platform for stimulating exchange of ideas, including the opportunity for PhD students to present their first results to a wider, encouraging audience. The workshop week from Monday to Friday is roughly structured by (generally formulated) 'theme days', which are organized individually by two topic experts in the style they feel appropriate. On Saturday there will be a day excursion to a nice place nearby. Everyone is most welcome to participate and to present her/his views on one or more of the covered topics, on one or more days! A full-time PhD Scholarship on Regression with Interval Data is available at the University of Hull, Department of Mathematics. Regression is one of the main methods of statistical analysis, widely used in all application fields. However, data are often not of the quality required in order to perform standard regression analyses. In particular, data are often interval-censored, meaning that data values are not known exactly, but only known to lie in particular intervals. The goal of the PhD project is to develop a well-founded general approach to regression with interval-censored data. The closing date for applications is 13 February 2015. IJCAI’15 Workshop on Sensitivity Analysis and Robustness in Probabilistic Graphical Models Buenos Aires, July 25-27, 2015 - http://ipg.idsia.ch/wijcai15/ FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS Probabilistic graphical models are important tools in machine learning and artificial intelligence for reasoning with uncertainty. They provide means to represent large multivariate domains compactly and to perform sophisticated learning and reasoning efficiently. Examples of probabilistic graphical models are Bayesian networks, Markov Random fields, chain and factor graphs, Gaussian graphical models, to name but a few. The quantification of these models usually requires sharp (i.e., precise) assessments of the model local potentials and might be subject to robustness issues. For instance, perturbations of some parameter values may lead to different decisions from those which would be achieved by the unperturbed model, suggesting that decisions are not reliable. Reliability might also be in question because of missing data and assumptions behind the process. The workshop invites submissions of papers on all aspects of sensitivity analysis and robustness in probabilistic graphical models. Contributions may have a theoretical focus and/or an applied focus. A non-exhaustive list of topics follows. - Local and/or global sensitivity analysis. - Parameter-based and/or decision-based sensitivity analysis. - Design of robust learning, inference and/or decision making approaches. - Robust analysis and design of robustness measurements. - Extensions of probabilistic graphical models. - Reliable qualitative learning and reasoning. - Robust treatment of missing data. - Imprecise probability and other theories related to sensitivity analysis. - Computational complexity, exact and approximate algorithms. Each submission will be reviewed by peers using a double-blind process (please use the third person in self citations and take all necessary care not to identify yourselves). A full-time PhD Scholarship on Regression with Interval Data is available at the University of Hull, Department of Physics and Mathematics. Regression is one of the main methods of statistical analysis, widely used in all application fields. However, data are often not of the quality required in order to perform standard regression analyses. In particular, data are often interval-censored, meaning that data values are not known exactly, but only known to lie in particular intervals. The goal of the PhD project is to develop a well-founded general approach to regression with interval-censored data. The closing date for applications is 2 February 2015.
