Call for papers Special Session on THEORETICAL AND APPLIED ASPECTS OF IMPRECISE PROBABILITIES to be held at the 12th International Conference on Soft Methods in Probability and Statistics (SMPS 2026) https://conference.unisalento.it/event/14/ Lecce (Italy), September 15-18, 2026 Session topic and goal This session is devoted to Imprecise Probability Theory. This theory involves all the mathematical models that can be used as more flexible tools than usual Probability Theory when the available information is scarce, vague or incomplete. It includes lower previsions, n-monotone capacities, belief functions, possibility measures, or non-additive measures, among others. This special session aims to include papers related to Imprecise Probabilities that either present a significant advance in the foundations or show potential applications in real problems. In addition, papers where the connection between imprecise probability theory and other fields such as fuzzy sets or game theory is emphasized are also welcome. It will be held on March 13, 2026, right before the Joint NAFIPS International Conference on Fuzzy Systems, Soft Computing and Explainable AI and 10th World Conference on Soft Computing NAFIPS 2026, El Paso, Texas, USA, March 14-16, 2026, https://sites.google.com/view/nafips26/ Constraint programming techniques are important components of intelligent systems. They constitute a declarative and efficient methodology to represent and solve many practical problems. They have been applied successfully to a number of fields, such as scheduling of air traffic, software engineering, networks security, chemistry, and biology. Despite the proved usefulness of these techniques, they are still under-utilized in real-life applications. One reason is the perceived lack of effective communication between constraint programming experts and domain practitioners about constraints, in general, and their use in decision making, in particular. Objectives of CoProD: * To present advances in constraint solving, optimization, and related topics; * To develop a network of researchers interested in constraint techniques, in particular researchers and practitioners that use numeric and symbolic approaches (or a combination of them) to solve constraint and optimization problems; * To address the gap between the great capacity of these techniques and their limited use. CoProD aims at encouraging presentation and discussion of on-going work. In particular, please note that there is room for presentation of ideas, as opposed to results only. It also aims at facilitating networking opportunities as well as cross-fertilization between the approaches used in the different attending communities. Therefore, besides active researchers in decision making and constraint programming techniques, we expect to have a wide attendance and participation of domain scientists -- whose input is highly valued in this workshop. By leveraging technological advancements in hardware and communication, software systems have grown in scale, complexity, and inter-dependence, thus introducing new challenges in performance and reliability evaluation. In fact, in distributed and heterogeneous environments, performance and reliability may be affected by many different factors (e.g., software architecture, hardware infrastructure, network communication, runtime environment). Although lots of effort has been contributed to performance and reliability evaluation of software systems, challenges still exist. Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) methods provide powerful tools to develop descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics, being able to learn the system behavior from observed data, detect anomalies at run time, and then trigger proactive remediation. At the same time, notable challenges are introduced as well, e.g., concerned with availability and quality of data, cost of re-training, and interpretability of results. This special issue solicits unpublished works on novel solutions that leverage AI, and in particular ML, to assess and improve performance and reliability of software systems. It is intended for researchers, engineers, and practitioners who study and work on AI/ML methods for software engineering as well as those interested in performance and reliability engineering in general. Works solely focused on improving classification or regression performance of AI/ML models (e.g., in terms of metrics such as accuracy, recall, F1 score) are outside the scope of this special issue. Papers are expected to demonstrate advances to performance and/or reliability evaluation methods. This special issue seeks submissions of full-length original research articles. This culminated in 2024 in the first QEST+FORMATS joint conference. In 2026, the two conferences will form the third QEST+FORMATS joint conference, which will be held on 2-4 September 2026 in Liverpool, UK, as part of the CONFEST 2026 umbrella conference. The joint conference is the leading forum for the quantitative evaluation and verification of systems. QEST+FORMATS aims to promote the study of fundamental and practical aspects of systems with quantitative nature (such as probability, timing, and cost). It aims to bring together researchers from different disciplines who share interests in the modelling, design, and analysis of computational systems. Systems of interest include biological and chemical systems; computer networks; critical infrastructures; cyber-physical systems; data-driven AI systems; energy systems; hardware and software systems; industrial systems; mobility networks; and quantum systems. The QEST+FORMATS joint conference also aims to attract researchers interested in real-time issues in hardware design, performance analysis, real-time software, scheduling, semantics and verification of timed, hybrid, and probabilistic systems. In general, the conference aims to attract experts in quantitative and timed systems from any domain. Case study papers shall provide detailed evaluation and insights, and highlight the value added to the domain experts. --- Tool papers: Contributions introducing new tools or significant improvements of existing ones, and the formalisms they support. These papers shall focus on the software architecture, practical implementation, and evaluation (e.g., usability, scalability, and effectiveness). Tool papers must be accompanied by an artifact in the Artifact Evaluation as detailed below. All three types of papers can be regular or short: --- Regular papers must not exceed 16 pages, excluding references. --- Short papers should be limited to 7 pages, also excluding references. --- All papers can have an appendix containing supporting material. Note that reviewers are not required to read the appendix to fully assess the merits of the paper. We are considering additional presentation-only submission types; details will be provided in the later CfPs. All papers must be submitted in Springer's LNCS format and will undergo a rigorous single-blind review process. All submitted papers must be unpublished and not be submitted for publication elsewhere. Papers should be submitted electronically using EasyChair (Track: QEST+FORMATS 2026). Springer encourages authors to include their ORCIDs in their papers. Authors should consult Springer's authors' guidelines and use Springer's LaTeX templates for the preparation of their papers. Dear colleagues, We are pleased to invite you to submit a paper to the Special Session entitled *Rough Sets and Hybrid Theories: Models, Logic, and Applications*, to be held within the framework of the *International Joint Conference on Rough Sets (*IJCRS 2026 <https://ijcrs2026.uca.es/>). Dear SIPTA colleagues, I’d like to spread a few words about the recent publication of my book “Arbitrage and Rational Decisions”. Publisher links, supporting materials, and a free draft copy of the entire book can be found at this web site: https://people.duke.edu/~rnau/book/Arbitrage_and_Rational_Decisions.htm It was in progress for many years, dating back to the dawn of SIPTA, but the issues that it considers are foundational and still timely. It presents a unified view of the foundations of rational choice theory: subjective probability and expected utility theory, state-preference theory, non-expected utility theory, noncooperative game theory, asset pricing theory, and social aggregation. The unifying theme is the principle of no-arbitrage, i.e., avoidance of sure loss at the hands of other actors in your scene. In the context of subjective probability this is de Finetti’s concept of coherence, but it applies across the whole spectrum and leads to representation theorems that have a common structure in which a hyperplane (or many thereof) separates the convex set of arbitrage opportunities from the convex set of acceptable bets or trades, and the coordinates of the normal vector(s) are the observable parameters of the decision maker’s mind. Imprecision in probabilities, utilities, state prices, and noncooperative equilibria is a natural state of affairs within this framework. A running theme is that it makes a great deal of difference whether money is available as a medium of exchange and betting and (less well appreciated) as a language for constructing common knowledge of beliefs and tastes and reciprocal stakes in events in numerical terms. De Finetti had the right idea in using monetary bets as a measuring device. Nonlinear and/or state-dependent utility for money and/or non-expected-utility preferences are not problematic. They merely change the visible units of analysis from personal probabilities to risk-neutral probabilities, as in asset pricing theory. Probabilities do not need to be uniquely separated from utilities. When the setting is a noncooperative game, this method of analysis leads (via a slight twist on de Finetti’s theorem) to the result that Aumann’s correlated equilibrium, not Nash equilibrium, is the fundamental solution concept, which is illustrated on the book’s cover. The generic solution of a game is imprecise: a convex set of correlated equilibrium distributions. I hope that you may find some of these perspectives to be of interest. This culminated in 2024 in the first QEST+FORMATS joint conference. In 2026, the two conferences will form the third QEST+FORMATS joint conference, which will be held on 2-4 September 2026 in Liverpool, UK, as part of the CONFEST 2026 umbrella conference. The joint conference is the leading forum for the quantitative evaluation and verification of systems. QEST+FORMATS aims to promote the study of fundamental and practical aspects of systems with quantitative nature (such as probability, timing, and cost). It aims to bring together researchers from different disciplines who share interests in the modelling, design, and analysis of computational systems. Systems of interest include biological and chemical systems; computer networks; critical infrastructures; cyber-physical systems; data-driven AI systems; energy systems; hardware and software systems; industrial systems; mobility networks; and quantum systems. The QEST+FORMATS joint conference also aims to attract researchers interested in real-time issues in hardware design, performance analysis, real-time software, scheduling, semantics and verification of timed, hybrid, and probabilistic systems. In general, the conference aims to attract experts in quantitative and timed systems from any domain. Recently, generalised evidence theory, based on random fuzzy sets, has been proposed as a unifying framework encompassing both Dempster-Shafer and possibility theories. The biennial BELIEF conferences (sponsored by the Belief Functions and Applications Society https://www.bfasociety.org/) are dedicated to the confrontation of ideas, the reporting of recent achievements and the presentation of the wide range of applications of this theory. Previous editions of this conference series were held in Brest, France (2010); Compiègne, France (2012); Oxford, UK (2014); Prague, Czech Republic (2016); Compiègne, France (2018); Shanghai, China (2021); Paris, France (2022), and Belfast, UK (2024). To support cross-fertilization among researchers working in different subfields of AI and related disciplines, tutorials and special sessions will be proposed, with emphasis on the links between machine learning and uncertain reasoning, including topics such as quantification of prediction uncertainty, fusion rules for ensemble learning, belief propagation in deep neural networks, links with explainable and symbolic AI, etc. Submissions of papers combining several of these topics, or more generally at the intersection between belief functions and other AI methods or uncertainty theories are welcome. Dear SIPTAnts, Here is a small puzzle for you - I give it to my master students - that makes a nice point (it’s not mine, I only created a story around it). Enjoy, Marco *** A casino hosts a slot machine with only two spinning reels, A and B, each one displaying either 0 or 1. You observe the machine for a long time, thus verifying that those reels are independent and uniformly distributed, as they should: P(A)=P(B)=P(B|A)=1/2. One plays inserting two dollars in the machine, and wins 4 dollars if A=B and nothing otherwise. The game is fair in the sense that on average one wins 2 dollars. At some point you discover that you can manipulate reel A while it's spinning, thus setting it at the value you like. Are there conditions that enable you to win more than 2 dollars on average by doing so? (Think before reading on.) *** Imagine that the machine internally works as follows. It generates two independent uniformly random bits U and V. By a defect of construction, A and B are then set according to the following rules: - A=1 iff U=V. - B=1 iff U=1 or (A=1,U=0,V=1). Luckily, this does not affect the fact that the machine is indeed fair: P(A)=P(B)=P(B|A)=1/2. However, when you manipulate A, its value will no longer depend on U and V; it will just depend on what you decide, say A=1. This will make the clause (A=1,U=0,V=1) true whenever U=0,V=1. Whence B=1 will occur with probability 3/4: 1/2 due to U=1 plus 1/4 due to U=0,V=1. As a consequence, on average you will win 4*3/4 = 3 dollars, making an average profit of 1 dollar per game. *** The moral of the story: causation does not imply correlation - or, prediction does not inform action.

This relation between intervals and fuzzy computations is well known, but often, fuzzy researchers are unaware of the latest most efficient interval techniques and thus use outdated less efficient methods. One of the objectives of the proposed session is to help the fuzzy community by explaining the latest interval techniques and to help the interval community to better understand the related interval computation problems. Yet another relation between interval and fuzzy techniques is that the traditional fuzzy techniques implicitly assume that experts can describe their degree of certainty in different statements by an exact number. Dear colleagues and students, I am recruiting a Postdoctoral researcher with a background in game theoretic modelling, learning theory and both the theoretical and practical aspects of deep learning. The successful applicant will collaborate within a skilled and motivated team of scientists (from Trinity College Dublin, Queen's University Belfast and University California Riverside) dedicated to understand the security and privacy implications of the unused parameters present in machine learning models. The proposed research explores the problem both from the theoretical and empirical perspectives. *Description*: Machine Learning applications increasingly rely on Deep Neural Networks (DeepNNs) to achieve state-of-the-art performance across a wide range of real-world tasks, including Large Language Models. DeepNNs are typically highly over-parameterised, but this characteristic has been shown to facilitate both optimisation and generalisation. Nevertheless, such over-parameterisation also introduces many parameters that are not essential to the final learned model and whose specific values have little impact on its behaviour (don’t-care states). In both software and hardware systems, undefined behaviour and don’t-care states have been shown to be potential sources of vulnerabilities. The postdoc will conduct research that contributes to the following streams of work: 1) Investigate the possible strategies that colluding parties could use to maliciously exploit the unused parameters (learning capacity) of a machine learning model using techniques from information and learning theory; 2) Model the attacks within a game-theoretic framework under complete or incomplete knowledge (Bayesian games), which will enable to find optimal strategies for the players (Attacker, Nature and Defender); 3) Validate these theoretical models and strategies on machine learning models and real applications. Dear colleagues, As each year, the CNRS (centre national de recherche scientifique) will hire a number of people that will work in one of its associated laboratories (nation-wide in France), requiring candidates to provide a research project as well as a list of possible laboratories (associated to CNRS) in France where they could perform the proposed research. * Why should you apply? - CNRS positions are full permanent research positions that are, to my knowledge, one of the most flexible in terms of how you do your research. - CNRS offers quite a lot of opportunities (e.g., international labs) in case you want to make long foreign stays or develop your research into a product at some point. - As a CNRS researcher, you are mostly free to join any joint CNRS lab. This means that moving within France is very easy. - The institute is committed (and I can tell that by experience) to perform qualitative rather than quantitative assessments. So no obligation to publish or perish to prosper, but you can still play the game if you want. * Why should you not apply? - The salary is a priority for you: while it is quite decent at the start and quickly increases (in a rather predictable manner, as for all French state employees), it is probably below the level of tenured people in other European countries, notably due to the fact that France has historically chosen to have a lot of permanent public researchers/lecturers/professors (so monetary means are not concentrated nor subject to competition between universities). There is a number of ways to increase it (work part-time in company, give hours of teaching, providing some expertise, having salary supplements within projects), but most take some time away from research. - Learning French is not an option for you: while CNRS hires on a very regular basis non-french speaking researchers, daily life in France is definitely much more difficult if you do not have a working French. This can typically be acquired within some years (or maybe less) after arrival. * How should you apply? - Calendar: application files are typically to be submitted around January, with interviews in May. In order to prepare the candidacy, it is advisable to take contact with prospective teams/laboratories in October, November at the latest (preparing the application files take quite some time, and should be done in coordination at least with your preferred team) - Application file: It consists of a CV, a research statement (of about 10 pages in average), and of a research project that explains your scientific project for the next 5/10 years, understandable for specialist of the section you apply to (in computer science, the committee includes people from artificial intelligence, quantum computing, logic, mathematical programming, …). Within the project must be given three CNRS laboratories and teams (to be selected by the candidate among all the possible ones) in which you would like to perform this project. - Contacting laboratories/teams: if you have a laboratory/team you would like to join in case you are selected by CNRS, you should contact it as soon as possible. If you are interested or if you think of someone that could be interested, I will be happy to answer further questions, for instance to recommend labs where you could apply depending on your research project. Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to introduce a Special Issue on “Statistical Machine Learning and Bayesian Methods with Applications”. The fields of statistical machine learning and Bayesian analysis are rapidly evolving, fuelled by theoretical and computational advances and an increasing demand for interpretable, trustworthy, and adaptable models in high-stakes applications. While machine learning has often been developed and tested on benchmark datasets, it has already shown its value in significant real-world applications and continues to hold great untapped potential across domains such as spatial statistics, survival analysis, healthcare, and environmental science. This Special Issue seeks to highlight the synergy between modern Bayesian methods, including hierarchical, nonparametric, and deep probabilistic approaches, and statistical machine learning, with a particular focus on enhancing the transparency, robustness, and interpretability of predictive models. Contributions are encouraged that demonstrate both theoretical innovation and application-driven insights, providing proof-of-concept studies or real-world implementations with clear originality and significance. CoProD'2026 is the eighteenth edition of CoProD. It will be held on March 13, 2026, right before the Joint NAFIPS International Conference on Fuzzy Systems, Soft Computing and Explainable AI and 10th World Conference on Soft Computing, El Paso, Texas, USA, March 14-16, 2026, https://sites.google.com/view/nafips26/ Constraint programming techniques are important components of intelligent systems. They constitute a declarative and efficient methodology to represent and solve many practical problems. They have been applied successfully to a number of fields, such as scheduling of air traffic, software engineering, networks security, chemistry, and biology. Despite the proved usefulness of these techniques, they are still under-utilized in real-life applications. One reason is the perceived lack of effective communication between constraint programming experts and domain practitioners about constraints, in general, and their use in decision making, in particular. Objectives of CoProD: * To present advances in constraint solving, optimization, and related topics; * To develop a network of researchers interested in constraint techniques, in particular researchers and practitioners that use numeric and symbolic approaches (or a combination of them) to solve constraint and optimization problems; * To address the gap between the great capacity of these techniques and their limited use. CoProD aims at encouraging presentation and discussion of on-going work. In particular, please note that there is room for presentation of ideas, as opposed to results only. It also aims at facilitating networking opportunities as well as cross-fertilization between the approaches used in the different attending communities. Therefore, besides active researchers in decision making and constraint programming techniques, we expect to have a wide attendance and participation of domain scientists -- whose input is highly valued in this workshop. Proceedings / Publication: Submissions are expected in the form of extended abstracts of at least 2 pages and ideally no more than 5 pages (a few more pages is OK), formatted using the Springer edited book format, style file svmult.cls and an example of using this file (not related to CoProD) are attached to the workshop website. It also serves as an ideal forum for the exchange of ideas between theoreticians and practitioners in these and related areas. The 2026 edition of IPMU will take place at the Faculty of Economics of Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, in the nearby of the University city of Rome and the main train stations (Termini and Tiburtina). It celebrates the 40th anniversary from the first edition of the conference that took place in Paris, France. The choice of Rome for this special occasion is not a case since Rome and Paris are exclusively and reciprocally twinned, starting from April 1956. Sapienza University of Rome is one of the oldest universities of the world, being it funded in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII, and is the largest university in Europe. Due to its strategic position, the Faculty of Economics allows to easily reach the plethora of monuments, historic hot-spots and wonderful sightseeing places that awarded to Rome the name of the Eternal city.
