The Fourteenth European Conference on Symbolic and Quantitative Approaches to Reasoning with Uncertainty (ECSQARU 2017) THIRD CALL FOR PAPERS http://ecsqaru.idsia.ch The biennial ECSQARU conferences constitute a major forum for advances in the theory and practice of reasoning under uncertainty. Contributions come from researchers interested in advancing the scientific knowledge and from practitioners using uncertainty techniques in real-world applications. The scope of the ECSQARU conferences encompasses fundamental issues, representation, inference, learning, and decision making in qualitative and numeric uncertainty paradigms. Previous ECSQARU events have been held in Marseille (1991), Granada (1993), Fribourg (1995), Bonn (1997), London (1999), Toulouse (2001), Aalborg (2003), Barcelona (2005), Hammamet (2007), Verona (2009), Belfast (2011), Utrecht (2013), and Compiègne (2015). ECSQARU 2017 will be co-located with ISIPTA '17, the Tenth International Symposium on Imprecise Probability: Theories and Applications. The Tenth International Symposium on Imprecise Probability: Theories and Applications (ISIPTA '17) THIRD CALL FOR PAPERS http://isipta.idsia.ch The ISIPTA conference is the primary international forum about theory and applications of imprecise probability. Imprecise probability is a generic term for the many mathematical and statistical models and methods, allowing us to measure chance or uncertainty without the restriction of sharp probabilities. The symposium is open to contributions on all aspects of imprecise probability. ISIPTA '17 will be co-located with ECSQARU 2017, the Fourteenth European Conference on Symbolic and Quantitative Approaches to Reasoning with Uncertainty. [SIPTA] PhD studentship at Durham in offshore transmission systems asset management under severe uncertainty

Dear SIPTA friends, An exciting PhD opportunity is available at Durham, which directly seeks to develop and apply methods from imprecise probability to applications in offshore transmission systems asset management under severe uncertainty. The project is a collaboration between the School of Engineering & Computing Sciences, and the Department Mathematical Sciences, at Durham University, UK. It also involves active collaboration and support from the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult (a UK-based Industrial Research body), with facilities across the UK in Blyth, Glasgow and Fife. The funding includes fees at the UK/EU rates plus a monthly stipend (£1.2k per month) as well as additional funding for travel and consumables. Non-EU students have to provide the difference between international and UK/EU fees which is currently around £18k per year. As usual, we have many very interesting talks, in particular, talks related to uncertainty quantification (imprecise probabilities included). Many thanks to conference co-chairs, Stefanos Kollias and Yaochu Jin, for the great organization. The 2017 conference will be in Honolulu, Hawaii, November 27 - December 1, 2017. Michael Beer, Rudolf Kruse, and myself are again organizing a symposium on Computational Intelligence in Engineering Solutions. The Fourteenth European Conference on Symbolic and Quantitative Approaches to Reasoning with Uncertainty FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS http://ecsqaru.idsia.ch The biennial ECSQARU conferences constitute a major forum for advances in the theory and practice of reasoning under uncertainty. Contributions come from researchers interested in advancing the scientific knowledge and from practitioners using uncertainty techniques in real-world applications. The scope of the ECSQARU conferences encompasses fundamental issues, representation, inference, learning, and decision making in qualitative and numeric uncertainty paradigms. Fabio G. Cozman is Professor at Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil. He works with probabilistic reasoning and machine learning, with a special interest in formalisms that extend probability theory. He has served, among other activities, as Program and General Chair of the Conf. on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence, Area Chair (Machine Learning track) of the Int. Joint Conf. on Artificial Intelligence, and as member of the Editorial Board of the Artificial Intelligence Journal, as well as Associate Editor of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research and of the Journal of Approximate Reasoning. Prof. Cozman will give a talk titled "The Finite Model Theory of Bayesian Networks: An Invitation". Adnan Darwiche is Professor and former Chairman of the Computer Science Department at UCLA. His research focuses on the theory and practice of symbolic and probabilistic reasoning, with recent applications to machine learning. He served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research (JAIR) and is an AAAI fellow. He is also author of "Modeling and Reasoning with Bayesian Networks", published by Cambridge University Press in 2009. The Society for Imprecise Probability: Theories and Applications (SIPTA) organizes the 7th edition of its school in Durham, UK, during Aug 29 - Sep 2 2016. The school will be held at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Durham University, close to the city centre of Durham. The aim of the SIPTA schools is to introduce interested students and researchers to the basics of imprecise probability topics, both theoretical and applied. Some of the best specialists in different aspects of imprecise probabilities lecture, during one week, on the main concepts and techniques in their area of expertise, in a friendly environment favouring interactions between participants. The topics covered this year will provide a general introduction to the latest developments in imprecise probability theory. There will also be a focus on applications of imprecise probabilities in risk analysis in engineering and environmental systems. Students will learn how to deal with situations where information is scarce, vague, or conflicting, and when a unique probability distribution may be hard to identify, from mathematical modelling to statistical inference and practical decision making. A basic understanding of probability and calculus are required (first year university level). A knowledge of Bayesian statistics is an advantage but is not required. The last day of the school overlaps with the WPMSIIP workshop, and will give all participants the possibility to present their work in a seminar, with discussion time. We plan for several leading researchers to be present for the discussions, and we also expect that some of the topics the students work on will be of further interest to the WPMSIIP workshop. Each submission will be evaluated for acceptability by at least three members of the Program Committee. Decisions about acceptance will be based on relevance to the above topic list, originality, potential significance, topicality and clarity. Since all accepted papers will be presented at the workshop, we require that at least one of the submitting authors must be a registered participant at the ISWC 2016 Conference, and committed to attend the URSW Workshop. Submissions to the workshop are only accepted in electronic format and should be sent via the workshop's EasyChair submission site: http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=ursw2016 Papers must be formatted in the style of the Springer Publications format for Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS). This is the very same format adopted by the ISWC 2016. Submissions exceeding this limit will not be reviewed. Following the general acceptance rules of the ISWC 2016 conference, papers that, at the time of submission, are under review for or have already been published in or accepted for publication in a journal or another conference will not be accepted to the URSW workshop. PRESENTATION AND PUBLICATION All papers accepted to the URSW will be presented during the workshop and published in the workshop proceedings. Authors of accepted technical papers will have 20 minutes to present their work, while authors of accepted position papers will have a 10-minute slot to share their ideas. After each presentation, 5 minutes will be allocated to questions from the audience. He is Chair of the Objective Bayes Section of the International Society for Bayesian Analysis (ISBA). Fabio G. Cozman is Professor at Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil. He works with probabilistic reasoning and machine learning, with a special interest in formalisms that extend probability theory. He got a PhD in Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University, and has served, among other activities, as Program and General Chair of the Conf. on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence, Area Chair (Machine Learning track) of the Int. Joint Conf. on Artificial Intelligence, and as member of the Editorial Board of the Artificial Intelligence Journal, as well as Associate Editor of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research and of the Journal of Approximate Reasoning Adnan Darwiche is Professor and former Chairman of the Computer Science Department at UCLA. His research focuses on the theory and practice of symbolic and probabilistic reasoning, with recent applications to machine learning. He served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research (JAIR) and is an AAAI fellow. He is also author of "Modeling and Reasoning with Bayesian Networks," published by Cambridge University Press in 2009. ==Tutorials We will have two tutorials. "Computational Complexity of Bayesian Networks and Markov Random Fields", by Cassio P. de Campos (Reader at Queen’s University Belfast, UK) and Johan Kwisthout (Lecturer at Radboud University, Artificial Intelligence Department, Netherlands).
