SIPTA School 2024: (Re)mind the dates!

To all interested researchers, young(er) and old(er), fast(er) and slow(er), Since the early bird deadline of the SIPTA School 2024 is approaching, we like to remind you to bear the following in mind: * If you want to make use of the early bird fee, you should register<https://school24.sipta.org/registration/> before 15 April 2024. The same deadline applies if you want to make use of our option to rent a private room for the duration of the summer school. * We have 5 grants available for (partially) covering your accommodation and transport costs. If you want to apply for one of these grants, you should do so by 10 April 2024. We remind you that the school’s aim is to introduce doctoral students – and other interested researchers – to the basics of imprecise probabilities, from its foundations in (applied) mathematics and logic to its applications in quantum physics, economy and AI. More information on the full programme, the lecturers, etc. can of course be found on the school’s website<https://school24.sipta.org/>. Date and location The SIPTA School 2024 takes place from Monday 12 to Friday 16 August 2024 in the wonderful city of Ghent, Belgium. Registration For doctoral students at a Flemish University, the registration fee is € 0 and the deadline for registration is 30 June 2024. For all other participants, the registration fee depends on the moment of registration. There is an early bird fee of € 100, which requires you to register before 15 April 2024. After this deadline, a late bird fee of € 125 will apply, and the deadline for registration is 30 June 2024 as well. All fees include admission to the lectures, lunches, coffee breaks, a pizza night and a kayak session. Moreover, we also provide you with the option to rent a private room for the duration of the summer school, which comes at a cost of € 330. If you want to make use of this option, then you must register before 15 April 2024. Grants We can distribute 5 grants to students who experience financial barriers to attending the summer school. In addition to waiving the registration fee, every grant provides free accommodation, and covers (part of) your transport costs up to € 250. These monthly events are open to anyone interested in IP, and will be followed by a Q&A and open discussion. They also provide an occasion for the community to meet, keep in touch and exchange between in-person events. The next seminar will take place on the 26th of March (Tuesday). Barbara Vantage is a Full Professor of Mathematical Methods of Economics, Finance and Actuarial Sciences at the University La Sapienza, Roma. She is well-known for her many contributions to the foundations of (imprecise) probabilistic reasoning under coherence, decision making under uncertainty and their development to financial applications. On the 26th of March at 15:00 CEST:paris time (up to 17:00 CEST, with a talk duration of 45min/1h), she will talk about "A dynamic Choquet pricing rule with bid-ask spreads under Dempster–Shafer uncertainty”, showing how imprecise probabilistic approaches can be useful in financial mathematics. This, in turn, facilitates a reliable and Trustworthy deployment of machine learning and Artificial Intelligence models. While the application of Trustworthy and Explainable Artificial Intelligence has been extensively explored in diverse domains such as healthcare and finance, its implementation in communication networks has been relatively sparse, despite being considered of paramount importance. This workshop seeks to address this gap by shedding light on the potential applications of Trustworthy and Explainable AI in achieving transparent AI-based automation for networking. This is a full-time (100%) position for a student active in the area of Counterfactual Fairness and Causal Explainability. The PhD research focuses on the fairness, explainability, and robustness of machine learning systems within the framework of causal counterfactual analysis using formalisms from probabilistic graphical models, probabilistic circuits, and structural causal models. The successful candidate holds a Master’s degree in Engineering or another STEM field (obtained or close to being obtained). Experience with Pytorch and proficiency in Python are optional but desirable skills. The starting date is May 2024 (or as can be arranged by mutual agreement). An originality of the SUM conferences is their care for dedicating a large space of their program to tutorials covering a wide range of topics related to uncertainty management. Dempster in the context of statistical inference, and was later developed by Glenn Shafer as a general framework for modeling epistemic uncertainty generalizing Bayesian probability theory. These early contributions have been the starting points of many important theoretical and practical developments. The theory of belief functions is now well established as a general framework for reasoning with uncertainty, and with applications in machine learning, statistical inference, information fusion, knowledge representation, risk analysis, etc. It has well understood connections with other frameworks such as probability, possibility and imprecise probability theories. The biennial BELIEF conferences (sponsored by the Belief Functions and Applications Society https://www.bfasociety.org/ <https://antiphishing.vadesecure.com/v4?f=SnpNUUNxek1BTWh6ZFZjaXX1rV-mm6_xB2…>) are dedicated to the confrontation of ideas, the reporting of recent achievements and the presentation of the wide range of applications of this theory. Previous editions of this conference series were held in Brest, France (2010); in Compiègne, France (2012); in Oxford, UK (2014); in Prague, Czech Republic (2016); in Compiègne, France (2018); in Shanghai, China (2021); and in Paris, France (2022). The Eighth International Conference on Belief Functions (BELIEF 2024) will be held in Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK, on September 4th-6th, 2024. These monthly events are open to anyone interested in IP, and will be followed by a Q&A and open discussion. Rafael Peñaloza Nyssen is currently Associate Professor at the IKR3 Lab of the University of Milano-Bicocca. Lately, he has taken a keen interest in reasoning and uncertainty, notably by using imprecisely specified probabilistic information in temporal reasoning. To all interested researchers, young(er) and old(er),We’re happy to announce that we’ve finalised the programme of the 11th SIPTA School, and that it can be found on the school’s recently launched website: https://school24.sipta.org/. We recall from our previous mail that the school’s aim is to introduce doctoral students – and other interested researchers – to the basics of imprecise probabilities, from its foundations in (applied) mathematics and logic to its applications in quantum physics, economy and AI. More information on the full programme, the lecturers, etc. can of course be found on the school’s website.DATE AND LOCATION The SIPTA School 2024 takes place from Monday 12 to Friday 16 August 2024 in the wonderful city of Ghent, Belgium,REGISTRATION The registration portal is open as of today. For doctoral students at a Flemish University, the registration fee is € 0 and the deadline for registration is 30 June 2024. For all other participants, the registration fee depends on the moment of registration. There is an early bird fee of € 100, which requires you to register before 15 April 2024. After this deadline, a late bird fee of € 125 will apply, and the deadline for registration is 30 June 2024 as well. All fees include admission to the lectures, lunches, coffee breaks, a pizza night and a kayak session. Moreover, we also provide you with the option to hire a private room for the duration of the summer school, which comes at a cost of € 330. However, these deployments predominantly function as black boxes, with practitioners unable to comprehend the internal reasoning or decision processes of these automated AI-based frameworks. In this context, eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) emerges as a promising collection of frameworks and technologies designed to enhance the transparency of black-box models. XAI achieves this by providing explanations for the decisions made, enabling practitioners to eliminate bias influencing models, understand when to trust or distrust model decisions, and gain insights into the problem at hand. In addition to this, it also becomes of paramount importance to design and adopt models and methods that are inherently able to quantify their uncertainty in taking decisions based on conformal prediction. This, in turn, facilitates a reliable and Trustworthy deployment of machine learning and Artificial Intelligence models. While the application of Trustworthy and Explainable Artificial Intelligence has been extensively explored in diverse domains such as healthcare and finance, its implementation in communication networks has been relatively sparse, despite being considered of paramount importance. This workshop seeks to address this gap by shedding light on the potential applications of Trustworthy and Explainable AI in achieving transparent AI-based automation for networking. The primary objective of the workshop is to foster collaboration among AI/ML and telecom engineers, facilitating the sharing and exchange of experiences and ideas related to all aspects of trustworthy and explainable AI for network management. Call for papers Special Session on THEORETICAL AND APPLIED ASPECTS OF IMPRECISE PROBABILITIES to be held at the 11th International Conference on Soft Methods in Probability and Statistics (SMPS 2024) http://www.smps2024.com<%22> Salzburg (Austria), September 4-6, 2024 Session topic and goal This session is devoted to Imprecise Probability Theory. This theory involves all the mathematical models that can be used as more flexible tools than usual Probability Theory when the available information is scarce, vague or incomplete. It includes lower previsions, n-monotone capacities, belief functions, possibility measures, or non-additive measures, among others. This special session aims to include papers related to Imprecise Probabilities that either present a significant advance in the foundations or show potential applications in real problems. About the Laboratory The MUDILAB at UNIMIB mainly focuses on the development and evaluation of decision support systems and eXplainable AI - human interaction protocols. Currently, the lab has two faculty members, three funded PhD students and two post-doc. The founders, the head Prof. Federico Cabitza and Prof. Davide Ciucci, have both been counted among the world's top 2% of researchers in AI and medical informatics for years, according to the list curated by Stanford researchers. The MUDI group has a recent track record of previous publications in prestigious venues (CHI, Interact, AAAI, ECAI, …) and research projects on both fundamental and application-oriented research, in collaborations with several hospitals and academic partners. The uncertainty (understood in a broad sense) considered here can pertain to data, to knowledge guiding their analysis, to processing steps and to the analysis results. Examples of possible topics include: * Representation models (including but not limited to deep learning ones), types of uncertainties (epistemic, aleatoric, impre-cision...). * Reasoning under uncertainties or conflict, approximate reasoning. * Integration of imprecision, uncertainty and inconsistency in the analysis process, either by repairing, by dealing with them (e.g. as metadata), by ignoring them, etc. * Evaluation of uncertain results, making them useful to the users. * Discussion about the necessity or opportunity to quantify uncertainty. * Applications involving some of the above topics The theoretical issues are at the core of many IPMU topics. Falsifiability

Dear SIPTAnts, I’m not sure this is “news”, but I’d still like to raise a point. It’s for those of you who care to connect probability to the real world. The point is that science needs falsifiability. And purely probabilistic models aren’t really falsifiable, they’re at most improbable. This appears to be a major reason why we have all these theories of probability, and the related communities, and there’s no way to prove anyone wrong. Which is good for our careers, and less so with regard to progress. Contrast this with structural causal modelling. When we put forward a causal graph (a theory), any of its arcs is either right or wrong. This we can often test experimentally, or by other means. We correct the model, re-test and iterate, eventually consolidating our model of the world. Probability still plays a role there, although one of secondary importance. So it seems to me that the scientific method is based on causality rather than probability. I guess I’m not saying anything new. I just wanted to make the point; to me it seemed something worth reflecting on. Bests Marco

Dear colleagues, on February 19-21, 2024, we are organizing the European “Workshop on Uncertainty in Machine Learning” (WUML 2024) in Munich, Germany. The last two editions of this workshop were held in Ghent in 2023 and Compiegne in 2021 with the last edition in Ghent attracting roughly 60 participants. With this email, we kindly invite you to attend WUML 2024. Like the previous workshop in Ghent, this is an informal event without a paper submission system. Every participant will have the choice to give a talk, present a poster, or just attend the workshop without a presentation. We have been able to collect some funding to cover the costs for coffee breaks and lunches, so we are happy to announce that attending the workshop will not involve any registration fee. Request for references on real-world applications of credal sets and interval expectation

Dear SIPTA Community, For a course on Uncertainty Representations and Reasoning, I'd like to compile a list of references (papers, book chapters, websites) which discuss (not necessarily as their main topic) real-world applications of credal sets and interval expectation (aka lower and upper previsions). With real-world, I mean those where the application was effectively put in practice. So not toy examples, or (possibly elaborately) worked out potential applications. It does include applications in other scientific domains and not just industry. The role of credal sets or interval expectation does not need to be ‘big’ or prominent, as long as it is there. I would be grateful if you could send me any such references in a private reply, and in particularly those about applications you were involved in yourself. The papers will get visibility among at least the students of the course, year after year. ;-) I will share the list I compile with others upon request. Submission Guidelines: All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference. The authors are invited to submit their full papers by May 15, 2023.
