Dempster in the context of statistical inference, and was later developed by Glenn Shafer as a general framework for modeling epistemic uncertainty generalizing Bayesian probability theory. These early contributions have been the starting points of many important theoretical and practical developments. The theory of belief functions is now well established as a general framework for reasoning with uncertainty, and with applications in machine learning, statistical inference, information fusion, knowledge representation, risk analysis, etc. It has well understood connections with other frameworks such as probability, possibility and imprecise probability theories. The biennial BELIEF conferences (sponsored by the Belief Functions and Applications Society https://www.bfasociety.org/ <https://antiphishing.vadesecure.com/v4?f=SnpNUUNxek1BTWh6ZFZjaXX1rV-mm6_xB2…>) are dedicated to the confrontation of ideas, the reporting of recent achievements and the presentation of the wide range of applications of this theory. Previous editions of this conference series were held in Brest, France (2010); in Compiègne, France (2012); in Oxford, UK (2014); in Prague, Czech Republic (2016); in Compiègne, France (2018); in Shanghai, China (2021); and in Paris, France (2022). The Eighth International Conference on Belief Functions (BELIEF 2024) will be held in Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK, on September 4th-6th, 2024. To support cross-fertilization among researchers working in different subfields of AI and related disciplines, tutorials and special sessions will be proposed and dedicated to the links between machine learning and uncertain reasoning, including topics such as quantification of prediction uncertainty, fusion rules for ensemble learning, belief propagation over deep neural networks, links with explainable and symbolic AI, etc. Submissions of papers combining several of these topics, or more generally at the cross-road of belie functions and other AI methods or uncertainty theories, along with relevant applications, are welcome. =========== Proceedings =========== Proceedings of the previous editions of BELIEF have been published by Springer-Verlag as volumes of the Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence (LNCS/LNAI) series and indexed by: ISI Web of Science; EI Engineering Index; ACM Digital Library; dblp; Google Scholar; IO-Port; MathSciNet; Scopus; Zentralblatt MATH. For doctoral students at a Flemish University, the registration fee is € 0 and the deadline for registration is 30 June 2024. For all other participants, the registration fee depends on the moment of registration. There is an early bird fee of € 100, which requires you to register before 15 April 2024. When considering the randomness of structural modelling and measurement data, the stochastic model updating becomes unavoidable. This direction is a hot topic in current structural model updating, which has a very good application prospect in practical structural health monitoring. A PhD is not required, but recommended. Previous background in AI and HCI is also highly recommended. About the Laboratory The MUDILAB at UNIMIB mainly focuses on the development and evaluation of decision support systems and eXplainable AI - human interaction protocols. Currently, the lab has two faculty members, three funded PhD students and two post-doc. The founders, the head Prof. Federico Cabitza and Prof. Davide Ciucci, have both been counted among the world's top 2% of researchers in AI and medical informatics for years, according to the list curated by Stanford researchers. The MUDI group has a recent track record of previous publications in prestigious venues (CHI, Interact, AAAI, ECAI, …) and research projects on both fundamental and application-oriented research, in collaborations with several hospitals and academic partners. The uncertainty (understood in a broad sense) considered here can pertain to data, to knowledge guiding their analysis, to processing steps and to the analysis results. Examples of possible topics include: * Representation models (including but not limited to deep learning ones), types of uncertainties (epistemic, aleatoric, impre-cision...). * Reasoning under uncertainties or conflict, approximate reasoning. * Integration of imprecision, uncertainty and inconsistency in the analysis process, either by repairing, by dealing with them (e.g. as metadata), by ignoring them, etc. * Evaluation of uncertain results, making them useful to the users. * Discussion about the necessity or opportunity to quantify uncertainty. * Applications involving some of the above topics The theoretical issues are at the core of many IPMU topics. Falsifiability

Dear SIPTAnts, I’m not sure this is “news”, but I’d still like to raise a point. It’s for those of you who care to connect probability to the real world. The point is that science needs falsifiability. And purely probabilistic models aren’t really falsifiable, they’re at most improbable. This appears to be a major reason why we have all these theories of probability, and the related communities, and there’s no way to prove anyone wrong. Which is good for our careers, and less so with regard to progress. Contrast this with structural causal modelling. When we put forward a causal graph (a theory), any of its arcs is either right or wrong. This we can often test experimentally, or by other means. We correct the model, re-test and iterate, eventually consolidating our model of the world. Probability still plays a role there, although one of secondary importance. So it seems to me that the scientific method is based on causality rather than probability. I guess I’m not saying anything new. I just wanted to make the point; to me it seemed something worth reflecting on. Bests Marco

Dear colleagues, on February 19-21, 2024, we are organizing the European “Workshop on Uncertainty in Machine Learning” (WUML 2024) in Munich, Germany. The last two editions of this workshop were held in Ghent in 2023 and Compiegne in 2021 with the last edition in Ghent attracting roughly 60 participants. With this email, we kindly invite you to attend WUML 2024. Like the previous workshop in Ghent, this is an informal event without a paper submission system. Every participant will have the choice to give a talk, present a poster, or just attend the workshop without a presentation. We have been able to collect some funding to cover the costs for coffee breaks and lunches, so we are happy to announce that attending the workshop will not involve any registration fee. The postdoc will also be largely involved in the project NWO Perspectief Personalized Oncology involving decision support systems for better care. Request for references on real-world applications of credal sets and interval expectation

Dear SIPTA Community, For a course on Uncertainty Representations and Reasoning, I'd like to compile a list of references (papers, book chapters, websites) which discuss (not necessarily as their main topic) real-world applications of credal sets and interval expectation (aka lower and upper previsions). With real-world, I mean those where the application was effectively put in practice. So not toy examples, or (possibly elaborately) worked out potential applications. It does include applications in other scientific domains and not just industry. The role of credal sets or interval expectation does not need to be ‘big’ or prominent, as long as it is there. I would be grateful if you could send me any such references in a private reply, and in particularly those about applications you were involved in yourself. The papers will get visibility among at least the students of the course, year after year. ;-) I will share the list I compile with others upon request. The Institut für Erdmessung (IfE) at Leibniz Universität Hannover (Germany)/DFG funded Research Unit (FOR5455) invites applications for the position of a Research Assistant (Doctoral Candidate, m/f/d) on *Distribution-free Uncertainty Description for Terrestrial Laser Scanner-based Areal Deformation Analysis (Salary Scale 13 TV-L, 100 %)* The position starts October 1st 2023 and is limited to 4 years. In the DFG funded Research Unit (FOR5455) “Deformation Analysis Based on Terrestrial Laser Scanner Measurements” (TLS-Defo, www.tlsdefo.de) relevant topics in TLS based deformation analysis will be investigated in a consortium of five universities (Uni Bonn, TU Munich, Leibniz University Hannover, KIT Karlsruhe, and TU Vienna). Project 5 "Distribution-free Uncertainty” will use intervals and sets to derive observation intervals for terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) measurements based on data analysis of terrestrial laser scans. Next, a concept has to be developed to propagate them to TLS point clouds. Subsequently, uncertainty regions of each TLS point can be derived as well as concepts for deformation analysis by intersection of these regions over subsequent epochs. As a matter of fact, the presence of inconsistent, incomplete, inaccurate or uncertain data may not only hamper problem modeling and solving, but also the process of explaining the solutions. More theoretical approaches, on the other hand, have provided graphical tools for principled knowledge representation and reasoning that are much more transparent than opaque real-world AI applications. Indeed, graphical models such as Bayesian networks, knowledge graphs and ontologies have long been used to facilitate the representation of and the reasoning with imperfect data. By providing a visual dimension, they contribute to increasing the understanding of the problem, and thus help practitioners, users (lay and expert) as well as engineers in designing solutions that improve trust, efficiency and transparency. The GRID workshop aims at bringing the applied and the theoretical approaches together for the benefit of both. Real-world applications can gain in explainability through the use of graphical models, while addressing the intrinsic challenges of poor quality data can improve the understanding and use of graphical models. Small workshops are often organised around one unifying theme, be it a methodological theme or a challenge. We here focus on both a methodological theme and a challenge. Our approach will bring together 1) a variety of methods drawing on graphical representation and 2) a variety of application domains dealing with different aspects of imperfect data. The varieties generate the necessary distance between approaches to provide opportunities for cross-pollination, while similarities of methods and domains make for a sufficient closeness guaranteeing mutual relevance. TOPICS This workshop welcomes submissions dealing with the general topics of graphical models and imperfect data and their integration, from the perspective of knowledge representation and reasoning. ** *Apologies if you receive multiple announcements* *** The Thirteenth International Symposium on Imprecise Probability: Theories and Applications (ISIPTA 2023) Oviedo, 11-14 July, 2023. In our call for papers we stated that there is “Uncertainty modelling beyond probability” and tried to convince you that ISIPTA 2023 is a good place for discussing such matters. The paper submission deadline has passed, but you can still present your work at ISIPTA, because poster abstract submission is open. These poster abstracts are intended for discussing preliminary results and open questions, or for bringing published results to the attention of the ISIPTA audience. Each accepted poster abstract will be announced in a short plenary spotlight presentation, and the accompanying poster will be presented at length during one of the discussion sessions. Given the prominent role of poster presentations at ISIPTA, these sessions provide you with a genuine opportunity for presenting your work to the ISIPTA audience. The deadline for poster submission is May 1. You can submit at any time before that, though, and we will provide you with a decision within two weeks. Not convinced yet? Then perhaps the following features can persuade you. Basic info:ISIPTA 2023 will take place in hotel ACForum in Oviedo, from July 11 to July 14, 2023. Additional information is available on our website: https://isipta23.sipta.org/ Scope:The ISIPTA conferences are devoted to robustness and imprecision in uncertainty modelling, inference and decision making, focusing in particular on uncertainty frameworks that extend or replace the probabilistic one. Invited speakers:ISIPTA 2023 will feature keynote talks by Gert de Cooman (Ghent University, Belgium), Marta Kwiatkowska (University of Oxford, United Kingdom) and Michel Grabisch (Université Paris I- Panthéon Sorbonne). In addition, a homage to the late Professor Terrence Fine will take place. Concept: Each accepted contribution is presented anddiscussed, in two separate sessions. Presentations are short and always plenary. Detailed explanations and discussions will take place in a poster session. Registration: Registration is open. The deadline for early registration is May 20, while the extended registration deadline is June 15. The early registration fees are 450 for regular, 250 for students and 150 for accompanying people. Atmosphere: ISIPTA conferences are characterised by a friendly and cooperative style, a strong emphasis on in-depth discussion and openness to new ideas. We hope that you too will enjoy and contribute to this unique atmosphere. Awards:ISIPTA 2023 will hand out an IJAR Young Researcher Award (for excellent research in the area of imprecise probabilities) and several poster awards. The IJAR award is sponsored by the International Journal of Approximate Reasoning. The deadline for applying for the IJAR Young Researcher Award is May 20; the rules for application are available on our website. Anyone who presents a poster (either for a paper or poster abstract) is eligible for the poster prizes.
