PhD student opportunity - Prognostics and Health Management solutions for Reliable Autonomous Systems

*Prognostics and Health Management solutions for* *Reliable Autonomous Systems* *Description* The revolution in robotics and autonomous systems (RAS) is unstoppable. The advance of autonomous system applications, such as autonomous transport [1, 2] and autonomous inspections [3], generate multiple benefits for the industry and society, including the improved driving security in autonomous transport, and improved reliability of critical and remote infrastructure through specialized robots and drones. However, the reliability assurance of RAS is a complex challenge, as it requires incorporating advanced intelligence that should evolve according to run-time operation [4]. The challenging yet exciting, operation context of RAS, hampers the reliability assurance of RAS, which decelerates the acceptance and everyday use of RAS. Different technological solutions have emerged to improve the design and reliability of RAS [5]. Most of the technological configurations include a combination of mechanical and electrical components, along with onboard software intelligence to adopt decisions without direct human intervention. In this context, using the ever-increasing prognostics and health management solutions, it is possible to develop a prognostics modelling approach for RAS health monitoring using reliability, machine learning, uncertainty modelling and optimization methods [6]. The project’s objective is to develop novel prognostics methods for RAS, which can accurately inform about the model’s confidence in the decisions in real-time and the way to mitigate the existing problem via optimization methods, and always, provide a worst-case estimate on its predictions by using a proper modelling and update of the different sources of uncertainty. In particular, the work will focus on the integration of uncertainties to make prognostic predictions robust, using concepts such as adversarial learning, combined with statistical learning and artificial intelligence methods. The models developed in this project will be validated with the data collected from industry partners that work with autonomous robots focusing on (i) autonomous remote inspections for renewable energy and (ii) automotive industry. The project will be developed in <https://www.mondragon.edu/en/home>Mondragon Unibertsitatea within the Electronics and Computer Science Department, in collaboration between the Data Analytics and Signal Processing and Communications groups. Throughout the thesis, the student will engage continuously with industry and stays at different universities and/or research centers will be pursued. Looking for test cases for imprecise/conditional probabilistic satisfiability/coherence checking

Dear SIPTA list, After having lain dormant, research on the CONEstrip algorithms [*] has awakened again. These algorithms are essentially meant for checking coherence of general sets of desirable gambles. This is very closely related to checking coherence of imprecise or conditional probability assessments and probabilistic satisfiability (PSAT). The classical CONEstrip algorithm assumes gambles are directly specified (as vectors); this corresponds to having an explicit description of the possibility space. The propositional CONEstrip algorithm assumes gambles are expressed as linear combinations of propositional sentences; this corresponds to specifying (imprecise/conditional) probabilities for events and relationships between events, but leaving the underlying possibility space implicit. A collaborator is working with my support on creating implementations and evaluating these. For the evaluation, we want to use realistic test cases. These are nontrivial to construct, certainly for the propositional context. Therefore, we are looking for such test cases. So I would like to ask you to send me any information you may have about existing test cases of this kind (or ones that are ‘close enough’). This can be in the form of pointers to papers with a description of one or more problems that may function as test cases or as pointers to files containing test cases encoded in some documented format. In this talk, I will argue that imprecision also has strongly positive sides, and that it can allow us to look at, approach and deal with existing problems in novel ways. I will provide a number of examples to corroborate for this thesis, based on my research experience in a number of fields: inference and decision making, stochastic processes, algorithmic randomness, game-theoretic probability, functional analysis, ... This complexity is not only a feature of engineering systems, processes and products, it is primarily a key attribute of the respective algorithms for analysis, control and decision-making to develop those engineering solutions. To cope with complexity in this broad spectrum of demands, Computational Intelligence is implemented increasingly in virtually all engineering disciplines. This emerging approach provides a basis for developments of a new quality. This Symposium is focused on the utilization of Computational Intelligence in this context in the entire field of engineering. Examples concern the control of processes of various kinds and for various purposes, monitoring with sensors, smart sensing, system identification, decision-support and assistance systems, visualization methods, prediction schemes, the solution of classification problems, response surface approximations, the formulation of surrogate models, etc. The engineering application fields may comprise, for example, bioengineering with prostheses design and control, civil and mechanical engineering processes, systems and structures concerned with vehicles, aircraft or bridges, industrial and systems engineering with design and control of power systems, electrical and computer engineering with developments in robotics, etc. All kinds of approaches from the field of Computational Intelligence are welcome. As a part of the Symposium special attention is paid to sustainable engineering solutions to address current and future challenges of environmental changes and uncertainty. This includes developments dealing with climate change, environmental processes, disaster warning and management, infrastructure security, lifecycle analysis and design, etc. Events, disasters and issues under consideration may be natural such as earthquakes or tsunamis, man-made such as human failure or terrorist attacks, or a combination thereof including secondary effects such as failures in nuclear power plants, which may be critical for systems, the environment and the society. These monthly events are open to anyone interested in IP, and will be followed by a Q&A and open discussion. They also provide an occasion for the community to meet, keep in touch and exchange between in-person events. For our first seminar, we are very happy to have Gert de Cooman as our inaugural speaker. He has been a strong advocate of IP for over 20 years, was a founding member and the first president of SIPTA, and contributed to the foundations of IP ever since. It provides a forum for discussing recent advances and identifying new research challenges in the intersection of both fields, thereby supporting a cross-fertilisation of these disciplines. Following the five previous editions of this workshop, which took place in Mons in 2012, Paris in 2014, Paderborn in 2016, Poznan in 2018, and Trento (virtually) in 2020, DA2PL 2022 will be held at the Université de Technologie de Compiègne, France, the 17 and 18 november. ======================== DA2PL 2022 vs COVID-19 ======================== We expect DA2PL to be mainly a physical event. We will provide a virtual option for participants wishing to be there remotely, but will request at least one full registration per submitted paper. ======== TOPICS ======== DA2PL 2022 solicits contributions to the usage of theoretically supported preference models and formalisms in preference learning as well as communications devoted to innovative preference learning methods in decision analysis and multicriteria decision aiding. Specific topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - quantitative and qualitative approaches to modelling preferences, user feedback and training data; - preference representation in terms of graphical models, logicalformalisms, and soft constraints; - dealing with incomplete and uncertain preferences; - preference aggregation and disaggregation; - learning utility functions using regression-based approaches; - preference elicitation and active learning; - preference learning in combinatorial domains; - learning relational preference models and related regression problems; - classification problems, such as ordinal and hierarchical classification; - inducing monotonic decision models for preference representation; - comparison of different preference learning paradigms (e.g., monolithic vs. decomposition); - ranking problems, such as object ranking, instance ranking and label ranking; - complementarity of preference models and hybrid methods; - explanation of recommendations; - applications of preference learning, such as web search, information retrieval, electronic commerce, games, personalization, recommender systems, … ============= Submissions ============= Submissions must be written in English and formatted according to the electronic template that is available at https://da2pl.pre.utc.fr/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/2022/03/DA2PL22_templa… The page limit is 8 for full papers, although extended abstracts (maximum two pages) are welcome, too. Double-blind reviewing is used for research papers, so submitted papers must not reveal authors identify (for example, use your paper ID from EasyChair instead of author name in your paper). Do NOT use a fake name for your EasyChair login; your EasyChair account information is hidden from reviewers. Authors should indicate the special track "Uncertain Reasoning" for submissions. There are three kinds of submissions: * full paper - a paper of high quality, which will be published in the proceedings (up to 6 pages) and will be presented by the author in a corresponding track (20 minute oral presentation); * short paper - a paper that shows some novelty and general interest, but is more preliminary or in the early stages of development, which also get published in the proceedings (up to 4 pages) and the author presents the work in a poster session; and * poster abstract, which will be published as abstract only (up to 250 words; please follow this format for the final camera-ready poster abstract) and the author presents the work in a poster session. Rejected full papers may still be accepted as short papers or poster abstracts, if reviewers found interest in the idea, but the paper quality was not sufficient to be published in full length. For each accepted paper (full, short, or poster abstract), there must be an accompanying AUTHOR REGISTRATION. A single author may have up to a maximum of two papers per AUTHOR REGISTRATION. Dear Siptians, Some time ago, we (mainly Pierre-Henri Wuillemin and Matthieu Hourbrack) added some credal network possibilities to AGRUM (https://agrum.gitlab.io/) a general package to work with graph-based models that is quite successful (~150.000 downloads last year). In his last survey (preparing an upcoming user day), Pierre-Henri was happily surprised to see that credal networks was one of the most used feature by users. He therefore wonders if anyone from the community was using it, or had useful feedbacks to provide. Just let me or Pierre-Henri know if this is the case, and if not you can always give AGRUM a try to put a little zest in your day! Dear colleagues, This is just a message to advertise that, as every year, the CNRS will soon consider applications to become a CNRS permanent researcher, usually with an application deadline around the beginning of january. The application process is competitive, with positions offering a lot of freedom in terms of research, and not coming with any teaching duties (although some can be taken). Speaking french is also optional (but helps in every day life). Applicants are required to provide a research statement of their past activities as well as a research project, and can apply to any CNRS-related laboratory in France (UMR CNRS). There are a number of such laboratories/team in which some researchers focus on uncertainty modelling with an imprecise/ambiguity component, including teams focusing on computer science (CID in Heudiasyc, CRIL, ADRIA in IRIT), economy (GREGHEC at HEC Paris), cognitive psychology (L.P.C. Aix-Marseille Université), and probably others I do not know. The Special Track on Uncertain Reasoning (UR) is the oldest track in FLAIRS conferences, running annually since 1996. The UR'22 Special Track at the 35th International Florida Artificial Intelligence Research Society Conference (FLAIRS-33) is the 25th in the series. As in the past years, UR'20 track seeks to bring together researchers working on broad issues related to reasoning under uncertainty. Papers on all aspects of uncertain reasoning are invited. Feel free to contact the organizers for any further information about the UR’22 special track. ::: Submission ::: Papers are due by January 24, 2022 (abstracts by January 17, 2022). Submissions of all papers to FLAIRS-35 is done through the EasyChair conference system: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=flairs35 When submitting your paper, select the Uncertain Reasoning track. Double-blind reviewing is used for research papers, so submitted papers must not reveal authors identify (for example, use your paper ID from EasyChair instead of author name in your paper). Do NOT use a fake name for your EasyChair login; your EasyChair account information is hidden from reviewers. Authors should indicate the special track "Uncertain Reasoning" for submissions. There are three kinds of submissions: * full paper - a paper of high quality, which will be published in the proceedings (up to 6 pages) and will be presented by the author in a corresponding track (20 minute oral presentation); * short paper - a paper that shows some novelty and general interest, but is more preliminary or in the early stages of development, which also get published in the proceedings (up to 4 pages) and the author presents the work in a poster session; and * poster abstract, which will be published as abstract only (up to 250 words; please follow this format for the final camera-ready poster abstract) and the author presents the work in a poster session. Rejected full papers may still be accepted as short papers or poster abstracts, if reviewers found interest in the idea, but the paper quality was not sufficient to be published in full length. There will also be a separate abstract only submission for authors who want to submit just an abstract and present it in a poster session. For each accepted paper (full, short, or poster abstract), there must be an accompanying AUTHOR REGISTRATION. A single author may have up to a maximum of two papers per AUTHOR REGISTRATION. Author names may be changed or re-ordered after reviewing; however, for budgetary reasons, registration fees will be based on the details at the time of submission and review. The accepted papers in the track will be published in the proceedings of FLAIRS-35 published by the FloridaOJ. Authors are expected to make a reasonable effort to address reviewers’ comments prior to the submission of the camera ready paper. Where such expectations have been flouted, actions may be taken to preserve the quality of the conference and the expectations of conference goers. In order for a paper to be published in the proceedings, the paper must be accompanied by at least one AUTHOR REGISTRATION. It is also expected that for a full (i.e., maximum 6-page) paper, at least one of the authors will attend the conference to present their work.

This theory involves all the mathematical models that can be used as more flexible tools than usual Probability Theory when the available information is scarce, vague or incomplete. This special session aims to include papers related to Imprecise Probabilities that either present a significant advance in the foundations or show potential applications in real problems.
