DATE: Tuesday 9th May at 2:30 PM PLACE: Aula Paci, Department of Philosophy, University of Milan, (via Festa del Perdono 7, 20122, Milano) For more information, please visit our website: http://www.cssa.unimi.it/ ABSTRACT: One criticism to the theory of imprecise probabilities (IP) is that there is no compelling example which mandates choosing an imprecise probability model over a precise probability one, but instead the appeal of the theory rests on intuitions about "Knighten" uncertainty that are inconclusive. This talk answers this criticism with a problem from the peer disagreement literature. The Preservation of Irrelevant Evidence (PIE) Principle maintains that a resolution strategy to peer disagreements should be able to preserve unanimous judgments of evidential irrelevance among the peers. It is well-known that no standard Bayesian resolution strategy satisfies the PIE Principle, and some -- such as Carl Wagner -- have argued so much the worse for PIE. In this paper we respond by giving a loss aversion argument in support of PIE and against Bayes. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION http://isipta.idsia.ch http://ecsqaru.idsia.ch [THE EVENT] The Tenth International Symposium on Imprecise Probability: Theories and Applications (ISIPTA ’17) and Fourteenth European Conference on Symbolic and Quantitative Approaches to Reasoning with Uncertainty (ECSQARU 2017) will be held jointly in Lugano (Switzerland), on July 10-14, 2017. Both the ISIPTA symposia and the ECSQARU conferences are biennial events to discuss theory and practice of reasoning under uncertainty. While ISIPTA is especially focused on the field of imprecise probabilities, the scope of ECSQARU covers more generic qualitative and numeric uncertainty paradigms. The co location of the two events is intended to favor cross-fertilization among researches active in both communities. [More in the ‘long version’ below. If you or someone in your network is active on a Stack Exchange site, please do read the ‘search for active SE users’ at the end.] *Long version* Our community can make good use of the popular Stack Exchange (SE) Question & Answer sites to educate about and promote imprecise probability. (About Stack Exchange: <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stack_Exchange>.) By answering questions related to imprecise probability theories and applications, we can help others get into the IP field and so make it more accessible, which over time may lead to a growth of our community. Authors of an accepted long or short paper will be expected to sign copyright release forms, and one author is expected to give a presentation at the conference. Authors of accepted abstracts will be expected to present their work during the conference, but the extended abstracts will not be published in the LNCS/LNAI proceedings (they will be made available in a separate booklet). Regular research papers should be at most 14 pages (including references, figures and tables). Short papers should be at most 7 pages. Extended abstracts should be at most 2 pages and should reference the originally published work. Dear SIPTA friends, An exciting PhD opportunity is available at Durham, which directly seeks to develop and apply methods from imprecise probability to applications in offshore transmission systems asset management under severe uncertainty. The project is a collaboration between the School of Engineering & Computing Sciences, and the Department Mathematical Sciences, at Durham University, UK. It also involves active collaboration and support from the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult (a UK-based Industrial Research body), with facilities across the UK in Blyth, Glasgow and Fife. The funding includes fees at the UK/EU rates plus a monthly stipend (£1.2k per month) as well as additional funding for travel and consumables. Non-EU students have to provide the difference between international and UK/EU fees which is currently around £18k per year. Authors are invited to submit their papers in English of up to 10 single spaced pages, presenting the results of original research or innovative practical applications relevant to the conference. The Fourteenth European Conference on Symbolic and Quantitative Approaches to Reasoning with Uncertainty FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS http://ecsqaru.idsia.ch The biennial ECSQARU conferences constitute a major forum for advances in the theory and practice of reasoning under uncertainty. Contributions come from researchers interested in advancing the scientific knowledge and from practitioners using uncertainty techniques in real-world applications. The scope of the ECSQARU conferences encompasses fundamental issues, representation, inference, learning, and decision making in qualitative and numeric uncertainty paradigms. ISWC is a major international forum for presenting visionary research on all aspects of the Semantic Web. The Uncertainty Reasoning workshop is an exciting opportunity for collaboration and cross-fertilization between the uncertainty reasoning community and the Semantic Web / Linked Data community. Effective methods for reasoning under uncertainty are vital for realizing many aspects of the Semantic Web vision, but the ability of current-generation web technology to handle uncertainty remains extremely limited. Each submission will be evaluated for acceptability by at least three members of the Program Committee. Decisions about acceptance will be based on relevance to the above topic list, originality, potential significance, topicality and clarity. Since all accepted papers will be presented at the workshop, we require that at least one of the submitting authors must be a registered participant at the ISWC 2016 Conference, and committed to attend the URSW Workshop. Prof. Cozman will give a talk titled "The Finite Model Theory of Bayesian Networks: An Invitation". Adnan Darwiche is Professor and former Chairman of the Computer Science Department at UCLA. The Society for Imprecise Probability: Theories and Applications (SIPTA) organizes the 7th edition of its school in Durham, UK, during Aug 29 - Sep 2 2016. The school will be held at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Durham University, close to the city centre of Durham. The aim of the SIPTA schools is to introduce interested students and researchers to the basics of imprecise probability topics, both theoretical and applied. Some of the best specialists in different aspects of imprecise probabilities lecture, during one week, on the main concepts and techniques in their area of expertise, in a friendly environment favouring interactions between participants. The topics covered this year will provide a general introduction to the latest developments in imprecise probability theory. There will also be a focus on applications of imprecise probabilities in risk analysis in engineering and environmental systems. Students will learn how to deal with situations where information is scarce, vague, or conflicting, and when a unique probability distribution may be hard to identify, from mathematical modelling to statistical inference and practical decision making. A basic understanding of probability and calculus are required (first year university level). A knowledge of Bayesian statistics is an advantage but is not required. The last day of the school overlaps with the WPMSIIP workshop, and will give all participants the possibility to present their work in a seminar, with discussion time. We plan for several leading researchers to be present for the discussions, and we also expect that some of the topics the students work on will be of further interest to the WPMSIIP workshop. Since all accepted papers will be presented at the workshop, we require that at least one of the submitting authors must be a registered participant at the ISWC 2016 Conference, and committed to attend the URSW Workshop. This non-tenure-track position carries a 9-month salary of $43,000 for a teaching load of fifteen credits hours each semester with the primary duty of teaching freshmen and sophomore level Statistics (especially) and Mathematics courses. Do you want to learn how imprecise probability can help you making robust decisions under uncertainty? Then the SIPTA summer school is for you! The Society for Imprecise Probability: Theories and Applications (SIPTA) organizes the 7th edition of its school in Durham, UK, during Aug 29 - Sep 2 2016. The school will be held at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Durham University, close to the city centre of Durham. The aim of the SIPTA schools is to introduce interested students and researchers to the basics of imprecise probability topics, both theoretical and applied. Some of the best specialists in different aspects of imprecise probabilities lecture, during one week, on the main concepts and techniques in their area of expertise, in a friendly environment favouring interactions between participants. The topics covered this year will provide a general introduction to the latest developments in imprecise probability theory. There will also be a focus on applications of imprecise probabilities in risk analysis in engineering and environmental systems. Students will learn how to deal with situations where information is scarce, vague, or conflicting, and when a unique probability distribution may be hard to identify, from mathematical modelling to statistical inference and practical decision making. A basic understanding of probability and calculus are required (first year university level). A knowledge of Bayesian statistics is an advantage but is not required. ==Call for Papers PGM 2016 is the eight edition of the International Conference on Probabilistic Graphical Models. It will take place in Lugano (Switzerland) between the 6th and the 9th of September 2016. The site of the conference is http://pgm.idsia.ch. It welcomes contributions on all aspects of graphical models including probabilistic reasoning, decision making, learning and data mining. It welcomes both theoretical and applied contributions. The deadline for submissions is May 20, 2016. ==Invited Speakers We are pleased to have three distinguished invited speakers. Guido Consonni is Professor of Statistics at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan, Italy. His current research topics are in the area of: model selection, graphical models and Bayesian networks, objective Bayesian analysis, models for high-dimensional data, hierarchical models. He is Chair of the Objective Bayes Section of the International Society for Bayesian Analysis (ISBA). Fabio G. Cozman is Professor at Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil. He works with probabilistic reasoning and machine learning, with a special interest in formalisms that extend probability theory. He has served as Program and General Chair of the Conf. on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence, Area Chair of the Int. Joint Conf. on Artificial Intelligence, and as Associate Editor of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research and of the Journal of Approximate Reasoning, as well as of the Artificial Intelligence Journal. Adnan Darwiche is Professor and former Chairman of the Computer Science Department at UCLA.
