Cheers, Matthias --- Research Associate in Statistical Uncertainty Quantification for Energy Systems Modelling Job Title : Research Associate Grade 7 (£32,004) Closing date for applications: midday on 20-Feb-2017 The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Durham University, UK invites applications for a postdoctoral position, to begin ideally by end April 2017, and for a 30 month period in the first instance. The post-holder will conduct research in statistical methodology related to the projects ‘Uncertainty analysis of hierarchical energy systems models: Models versus real energy systems’ (http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/K03832X/1) and ‘Centre for Energy Systems Integration’ (CESI, http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/P001173/1) funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. The research will use state-of-the-art statistical methodology for uncertainty analysis in a range of complex computer simulators representing energy economics and engineering systems. There will be a particular emphasis on developing new methodology for analysing the propagation of uncertainty between linked models. Exemplars will be drawn primarily from the CESI project – the concept of energy systems integration is coordination of operation and planning of different levels (e.g. national and local) of the energy system, and of the systems for different energy carriers (gas ,electricity, heat etc.) There will be substantial opportunities for collaboration with other academic disciplines and industrial partners within the CESI project. This is a 30 month fixed term, externally funded post, formed on the basis of appointment at the bottom of Grade 7 (£31,656) and provided that the successful candidate can commence the role by the end of April 2017. Dear SIPTA friends, An exciting PhD opportunity is available at Durham, which directly seeks to develop and apply methods from imprecise probability to applications in offshore transmission systems asset management under severe uncertainty. The project is a collaboration between the School of Engineering & Computing Sciences, and the Department Mathematical Sciences, at Durham University, UK. It also involves active collaboration and support from the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult (a UK-based Industrial Research body), with facilities across the UK in Blyth, Glasgow and Fife. The funding includes fees at the UK/EU rates plus a monthly stipend (£1.2k per month) as well as additional funding for travel and consumables. Non-EU students have to provide the difference between international and UK/EU fees which is currently around £18k per year. The Society for Imprecise Probability: Theories and Applications (SIPTA) organizes the 7th edition of its school in Durham, UK, during Aug 29 - Sep 2 2016. The school will be held at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Durham University, close to the city centre of Durham. The aim of the SIPTA schools is to introduce interested students and researchers to the basics of imprecise probability topics, both theoretical and applied. Some of the best specialists in different aspects of imprecise probabilities lecture, during one week, on the main concepts and techniques in their area of expertise, in a friendly environment favouring interactions between participants. The topics covered this year will provide a general introduction to the latest developments in imprecise probability theory. There will also be a focus on applications of imprecise probabilities in risk analysis in engineering and environmental systems. Students will learn how to deal with situations where information is scarce, vague, or conflicting, and when a unique probability distribution may be hard to identify, from mathematical modelling to statistical inference and practical decision making. A basic understanding of probability and calculus are required (first year university level). A knowledge of Bayesian statistics is an advantage but is not required. The last day of the school overlaps with the WPMSIIP workshop, and will give all participants the possibility to present their work in a seminar, with discussion time. We plan for several leading researchers to be present for the discussions, and we also expect that some of the topics the students work on will be of further interest to the WPMSIIP workshop. ==Call for Papers PGM 2016 is the eight edition of the International Conference on Probabilistic Graphical Models. It will take place in Lugano (Switzerland) between the 6th and the 9th of September 2016. The site of the conference is http://pgm.idsia.ch. It welcomes contributions on all aspects of graphical models including probabilistic reasoning, decision making, learning and data mining. It welcomes both theoretical and applied contributions. The deadline for submissions is May 20, 2016. ==Invited Speakers We are pleased to have three distinguished invited speakers. Guido Consonni is Professor of Statistics at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan, Italy. His current research topics are in the area of: model selection, graphical models and Bayesian networks, objective Bayesian analysis, models for high-dimensional data, hierarchical models. He is Chair of the Objective Bayes Section of the International Society for Bayesian Analysis (ISBA). Fabio G. Cozman is Professor at Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil. He works with probabilistic reasoning and machine learning, with a special interest in formalisms that extend probability theory. He has served as Program and General Chair of the Conf. on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence, Area Chair of the Int. Joint Conf. on Artificial Intelligence, and as Associate Editor of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research and of the Journal of Approximate Reasoning, as well as of the Artificial Intelligence Journal. Adnan Darwiche is Professor and former Chairman of the Computer Science Department at UCLA. His research focuses on the theory and practice of symbolic and probabilistic reasoning, with recent applications to machine learning. He served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research (JAIR) and is an AAAI fellow. He is also author of "Modeling and Reasoning with Bayesian Networks," published by Cambridge University Press in 2009. ==Tutorials We will have two tutorials. "Computational Complexity of Bayesian Networks and Markov Random Fields", by Cassio P. de Campos, Reader at Queen’s University Belfast, UK. Dear Friends, Today is the last day of the 9th International Conference of Thailand Econometric Society TES'2016. This conference was a big success, with a Nobelist Robert Engle giving the keynote talk. Next year's conference will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, January 11-13, 2017. Its main theme is robustness in econometrics. The main idea that we have only an approximate information about the corresponding probability distributions and about the values of the corresponding parameters. So, it is desirable to develop data processing, data analysis, and prediction techniques which are robust, i.e., in some reasonable sense, applicable not just to the nominal distributions and values, but also to possible deviations from these nominal values. This seems to be a perfect setting for imprecise probability techniques. Mark your calendars. P.S. As in the previous years, accepted papers will be published in an edited volume published by Springer-Verlag as part of the book series "Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing". P.P.S. Chiang Mai is a city in mountainous northern Thailand that dates back to the 1200s. Its Old City area still retains vestiges of walls and moats from its history as a cultural and religious center. It’s also home to hundreds of elaborate temples, including 14th-century Wat Phra Singh and 15th-century Wat Chedi Luang, adorned with carved serpents. These sessions can be one of two formats: paper or panel. Paper sessions consist of a collection of talks and discussions (if appropriate) that share a common topic. [All our apologies for cross-posting.] Seventh school of the Society for Imprecise Probability: Theories and Applications (SIPTA), Aug 29 - Sep 2, 2016, Durham, UK. Dear colleagues, The Society for Imprecise Probability: Theories and Applications (SIPTA) organizes the 7th edition of its school in Durham, UK, during Aug 29 - Sep 2 2016. The school will be held at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Durham University, close to the city centre of Durham. The aim of the SIPTA schools is to introduce interested students and researchers to the basics of imprecise probability topics, both theoretical and applied. Some of the best specialists in different aspects of imprecise probabilities lecture, during one week, on the main concepts and techniques in their area of expertise, in a friendly environment favouring interactions between participants. The topics covered this year will provide a general introduction to the latest developments in imprecise probability theory. There will also be a focus on applications of imprecise probabilities in risk and related fields. Students will learn how to deal with situations where information is scarce, vague, or conflicting, and when a unique probability distribution may be hard to identify, from mathematical modelling to statistical inference and practical decision making. The last day of the school overlaps with the WPMSIIP workshop, and will give all participants the possibility to present their work in a seminar, with discussion time. We plan for several leading researchers to be present for the discussions, and we also expect that some of the topics the students work on will be of further interest to the WPMSIIP workshop. Further information concerning registration and a more detailed lecture outline with specific topics and lecturers will follow in January 2016.
