Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) concerns the assessment of uncertainties and errors in complex mathematical models. Sources of uncertainty and error include uncertain model inputs, noisy data, incomplete knowledge of the model, and errors in numerical approximations. A variety of UQ methodologies have been developed by the Statistics and Applied Mathematics communities, often addressing similar problems from different perspectives, or using similar techniques but with different emphasis and nomenclature. This workshop will bring together leading researchers from both Statistics and Applied Mathematics for a series of introductory and tutorial presentations. The aim is to improve the understanding within each community of the others' research methods, and to identify common key challenges. The third community invested in UQ problems are the domain area experts and practitioners. The workshop will also include presentations from speakers from a variety of important application areas. FIRST CALL FOR PAPER 5th International Conference on Belief Functions (BELIEF 2018) and 9th International Conference on Soft Methods in Probability and Statistics (SMPS 2018) September 17-21, Compiègne, France Conference website: https://smpsbelief2018.hds.utc.fr/ The Fifth International Conference on Belief Functions (BELIEF 2018) and the 9th International Conference on Soft Methods in Probability and Statistics (SMPS 2018) will be held jointly in Compiègne, France, on September 17-21, 2018. The BELIEF and SMPS conferences are biennial events concerning the modeling of uncertainty. The BELIEF conferences are sponsored by the Belief Functions and Applications Society (BFAS) and are focused on the theory of belief functions, while the scope of SMPS covers the application of all approaches to uncertainty (including fuzzy and rough sets, imprecise probabilities, etc.) to statistics and data analysis. The co-location of the two events is intended to favor cross-fertilization among researchers active in both communities. A single registration will be required to attend the whole BELIEF 2018/SMPS 2018 event. ***apologies for cross posting*** Call for papers Special Session on "IMPRECISE PROBABILITIES: FOUNDATIONS AND APPLICATIONS" to be held at the 17th International Conference on Information Processing and Management of Uncertainty in Knowledge-Based Systems (IPMU 2018) http://ipmu2018.uca.es// Cádiz (Spain), June 11-15, 2018 Session topic and goal This session is devoted to Imprecise Probability Theory. This theory encompasses all the mathematical models that can be used as more flexible tools than usual Probability Theory when the available information is scarce, vague or incomplete. It includes lower previsions, n- monotone capacities, belief functions and possibility measures, among others. We would like to attract papers that discuss and solve foundational questions, or clearly demonstrate the usefulness of imprecise probabilistic models in an application. We would particularly welcome papers going from theoretical advances to the solution of an associated applied problem. Workshop website https://sites.google.com/site/wildml2017icml/ When can we trust that a system that has performed well in the past will continue to do so in the future? Designing systems that are reliable in the wild is essential for high stakes applications such as self-driving cars and automated surgical assistants. This workshop aims to bring together researchers in diverse areas such as reinforcement learning, human-robot interaction, game theory, cognitive science, and security to further the field of reliability in machine learning. We will focus on three aspects — robustness (to adversaries, distributional shift, model misspecification, corrupted data); awareness (of when a change has occurred, when the model might be miscalibrated, etc.);and adaptation (to new situations or objectives). We aim to consider each of these in the context of the complex human factors that impact the successful application or meaningful monitoring of any artificial intelligence technology. Together, these will aid us in designing and deploying reliable machine learning systems. We are seeking submissions that deal with the challenges of reliably applied machine learning techniques in the real world. Some possible questions touching on each of these categories are given below, though we also welcome submissions that do not directly fit into these categories. Robustness: How can we make a system robust to novel or potentially adversarial inputs? What are ways of handling model mis-specification or corrupted training data? What can be done if the training data is potentially a function of system behavior or of other agents in the environment (e.g. when collecting data on users that respond to changes in the system and might also behave strategically)? Awareness: How do we make a system aware of its environment and of its own limitations, so that it can recognize and signal when it is no longer able to make reliable predictions or decisions? Can it successfully identify “strange” inputs or situations and take appropriately conservative actions? How can it detect when changes in the environment have occurred that require re-training? How can it detect that its model might be mis-specified or poorly-calibrated? Adaptation: How can machine learning systems detect and adapt to changes in their environment, especially large changes (e.g. low overlap between train and test distributions, poor initial model assumptions, or shifts in the underlying prediction function)? How should an autonomous agent act when confronting radically new contexts? Monitoring: How can we monitor large-scale systems in order to judge if they are performing well? If things go wrong, what tools can help? Value Alignment: For systems with complex desiderata, how can we learn a value function that captures and balances all relevant considerations? How should a system act given uncertainty about its value function? Can we make sure that a system reflects the values of the humans who use it? Reward Hacking: How can we ensure that the objective of a system is immune to reward hacking? Reward hacking is a way that the system can attain high reward that was unintended by the system designer. Hello: Can someone answer this question? Was it Walley who initiated the word “gamble” to use in place of the classical “random variable”? De Finetti uses “random quantity”, as does Williams. “Gamble” is ubiquitous in the current literature, but I have not seen it anywhere prior to Walley’s 1991 book. This talk answers this criticism with a problem from the peer disagreement literature. The Preservation of Irrelevant Evidence (PIE) Principle maintains that a resolution strategy to peer disagreements should be able to preserve unanimous judgments of evidential irrelevance among the peers. It is well-known that no standard Bayesian resolution strategy satisfies the PIE Principle, and some -- such as Carl Wagner -- have argued so much the worse for PIE. In this paper we respond by giving a loss aversion argument in support of PIE and against Bayes. The post-holder will conduct research in statistical methodology related to the projects ‘Uncertainty analysis of hierarchical energy systems models: Models versus real energy systems’ (http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/K03832X/1) and ‘Centre for Energy Systems Integration’ (CESI, http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/P001173/1) funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. The research will use state-of-the-art statistical methodology for uncertainty analysis in a range of complex computer simulators representing energy economics and engineering systems. Exemplars will be drawn primarily from the CESI project – the concept of energy systems integration is coordination of operation and planning of different levels (e.g. national and local) of the energy system, and of the systems for different energy carriers (gas ,electricity, heat etc.) There will be substantial opportunities for collaboration with other academic disciplines and industrial partners within the CESI project. This is a 30 month fixed term, externally funded post, formed on the basis of appointment at the bottom of Grade 7 (£31,656) and provided that the successful candidate can commence the role by the end of April 2017. Dear SIPTA friends, An exciting PhD opportunity is available at Durham, which directly seeks to develop and apply methods from imprecise probability to applications in offshore transmission systems asset management under severe uncertainty. The project is a collaboration between the School of Engineering & Computing Sciences, and the Department Mathematical Sciences, at Durham University, UK. It also involves active collaboration and support from the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult (a UK-based Industrial Research body), with facilities across the UK in Blyth, Glasgow and Fife. The funding includes fees at the UK/EU rates plus a monthly stipend (£1.2k per month) as well as additional funding for travel and consumables. Non-EU students have to provide the difference between international and UK/EU fees which is currently around £18k per year. The Society for Imprecise Probability: Theories and Applications (SIPTA) organizes the 7th edition of its school in Durham, UK, during Aug 29 - Sep 2 2016. The school will be held at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Durham University, close to the city centre of Durham. The aim of the SIPTA schools is to introduce interested students and researchers to the basics of imprecise probability topics, both theoretical and applied. Some of the best specialists in different aspects of imprecise probabilities lecture, during one week, on the main concepts and techniques in their area of expertise, in a friendly environment favouring interactions between participants. The topics covered this year will provide a general introduction to the latest developments in imprecise probability theory. There will also be a focus on applications of imprecise probabilities in risk analysis in engineering and environmental systems. Students will learn how to deal with situations where information is scarce, vague, or conflicting, and when a unique probability distribution may be hard to identify, from mathematical modelling to statistical inference and practical decision making. A basic understanding of probability and calculus are required (first year university level). A knowledge of Bayesian statistics is an advantage but is not required. The last day of the school overlaps with the WPMSIIP workshop, and will give all participants the possibility to present their work in a seminar, with discussion time. We plan for several leading researchers to be present for the discussions, and we also expect that some of the topics the students work on will be of further interest to the WPMSIIP workshop. ISWC is a major international forum for presenting visionary research on all aspects of the Semantic Web. The Uncertainty Reasoning workshop is an exciting opportunity for collaboration and cross-fertilization between the uncertainty reasoning community and the Semantic Web / Linked Data community. The goal of the Demo Papers category is to promote applied research and applications, as well as bridge collaboration between industrial and academic members of the SMC community. Demo papers are intended to provide a platform for participants to demonstrate their technological advancements. Authors are invited to submit demo papers (maximum 2-page two-column format extended summary + at most 1 GB short demo video). Submission of Demo Papers and Video IEEE format guidelines and instructions for submitting demo papers (two-column format) will be available on the Paper Submission pages of the SMC2016 website. Please upload your short demo video via ftp website and use the "corresponding" paper number to entitle your demo film. No additional equipment is to be supported from the organizing committee. Authors are responsible to set up their own demos.
