The Institut für Erdmessung (IfE) at Leibniz Universität Hannover (Germany)/DFG funded Research Unit (FOR5455) invites applications for the position of a Research Assistant (Doctoral Candidate, m/f/d) on *Distribution-free Uncertainty Description for Terrestrial Laser Scanner-based Areal Deformation Analysis (Salary Scale 13 TV-L, 100 %)* The position starts October 1st 2023 and is limited to 4 years. In the DFG funded Research Unit (FOR5455) “Deformation Analysis Based on Terrestrial Laser Scanner Measurements” (TLS-Defo, www.tlsdefo.de) relevant topics in TLS based deformation analysis will be investigated in a consortium of five universities (Uni Bonn, TU Munich, Leibniz University Hannover, KIT Karlsruhe, and TU Vienna). Project 5 "Distribution-free Uncertainty” will use intervals and sets to derive observation intervals for terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) measurements based on data analysis of terrestrial laser scans. Next, a concept has to be developed to propagate them to TLS point clouds. Subsequently, uncertainty regions of each TLS point can be derived as well as concepts for deformation analysis by intersection of these regions over subsequent epochs. As a matter of fact, the presence of inconsistent, incomplete, inaccurate or uncertain data may not only hamper problem modeling and solving, but also the process of explaining the solutions. More theoretical approaches, on the other hand, have provided graphical tools for principled knowledge representation and reasoning that are much more transparent than opaque real-world AI applications. Indeed, graphical models such as Bayesian networks, knowledge graphs and ontologies have long been used to facilitate the representation of and the reasoning with imperfect data. By providing a visual dimension, they contribute to increasing the understanding of the problem, and thus help practitioners, users (lay and expert) as well as engineers in designing solutions that improve trust, efficiency and transparency. The GRID workshop aims at bringing the applied and the theoretical approaches together for the benefit of both. Real-world applications can gain in explainability through the use of graphical models, while addressing the intrinsic challenges of poor quality data can improve the understanding and use of graphical models. Small workshops are often organised around one unifying theme, be it a methodological theme or a challenge. We here focus on both a methodological theme and a challenge. Our approach will bring together 1) a variety of methods drawing on graphical representation and 2) a variety of application domains dealing with different aspects of imperfect data. The varieties generate the necessary distance between approaches to provide opportunities for cross-pollination, while similarities of methods and domains make for a sufficient closeness guaranteeing mutual relevance. TOPICS This workshop welcomes submissions dealing with the general topics of graphical models and imperfect data and their integration, from the perspective of knowledge representation and reasoning. In our call for papers we stated that there is “Uncertainty modelling beyond probability” and tried to convince you that ISIPTA 2023 is a good place for discussing such matters. The paper submission deadline has passed, but you can still present your work at ISIPTA, because poster abstract submission is open. These poster abstracts are intended for discussing preliminary results and open questions, or for bringing published results to the attention of the ISIPTA audience. Each accepted poster abstract will be announced in a short plenary spotlight presentation, and the accompanying poster will be presented at length during one of the discussion sessions. It will be held on May 30, 2023, right before the Annual Conference of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society NAFIPS'2023, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, May 31 - June 2, 2023, https://nafips2023.com/ Constraint programming techniques are important components of intelligent systems. They constitute a declarative and efficient methodology to represent and solve many practical problems. They have been applied successfully to a number of fields, such as scheduling of air traffic, software engineering, networks security, chemistry, and biology. Despite the proved usefulness of these techniques, they are still under-utilized in real-life applications. One reason is the perceived lack of effective communication between constraint programming experts and domain practitioners about constraints, in general, and their use in decision making, in particular. Objectives of CoProD: * To present advances in constraint solving, optimization, and related topics; * To develop a network of researchers interested in constraint techniques, in particular researchers and practitioners that use numeric and symbolic approaches (or a combination of them) to solve constraint and optimization problems; * To address the gap between the great capacity of these techniques and their limited use. CoProD aims at encouraging presentation and discussion of on-going work. In particular, please note that there is room for presentation of ideas, as opposed to results only. It also aims at facilitating networking opportunities as well as cross-fertilization between the approaches used in the different attending communities. Therefore, besides active researchers in decision making and constraint programming techniques, we expect to have a wide attendance and participation of domain scientists -- whose input is highly valued in this workshop. Proceedings / Publication: Submissions are expected in the form of extended abstracts of at least 2 pages and ideally no more than 5 pages (a few more pages is OK), formatted using the Springer edited book format, style file svmult.cls and an example of using this file (not related to CoProD) are attached to the workshop website. Thesis proposals in robust AI related fields

Dear Colleagues, Our team is offering various PhD proposals, whose topics concern * Uncertainties and imprecision in Spatial Interpolations for Urban Risk Mapping: the PhD student would integrate the HOUSES national project, that aims at handling severe uncertainties in geostatistics, notably to assess pollutants levels in water and grounds. * Robustness in Explainable AI: the PhD student would join our junior professor chair and develop robust explanation methods for AI predictive models, as well as explanation methods for uncertain predictions. * Robust event detection: the PhD student would join the SAFE AI chaire and develop statistical learning method that would detect events with pre-specified statistical guarantees, notably by working on how to obtain calibrated predictions for such tasks. The first retained case studies would concern obstacle detection for aid-decision in partially or fully automated vehicles, a domain on which our laboratory has significant expertise. The plan is to welcome papers related to all kinds of uncertainty: probabilistic (in particular, related to imprecise probabilities), interval, fuzzy, etc. The planned deadline for submissions is November 1, 2023. In the original version, the layers are sequential and each neuron in a layer is connected with neurons in the previous layer. Many other alternative architectures have been proposed to adapt DNNs to solve specific and complex problems. On the other hand, a theory called Dempster-Shafer theory of belief functions, or theory of evidence [15], has emerged as a rich and flexible generalization of the Bayesian probability theory, able to deal with imperfect (uncertain, imprecise, …) information. It is notably used in a growing number of applications such as classification (e.g. [2]), clustering (e.g. [3,7]) or information fusion (e.g. [5,13]). Recent works [6,16,17] have shown the interest of enriching a DNN with an additional distance-based Dempster Shafer layer [2] for predicting belief functions. These belief functions can be of great interest to represent a reality as faithfully as possible, for example to perform a partial classification [8], i.e. decisions in favor of a group of classes. The main idea of this thesis is to develop such deep evidential networks in more depth by exploiting methods developed at LGI2A allowing one to consider finer knowledge about the quality [12, 14] and the dependence of information [11], or the ignorance in predictions [9,10]. Two applications are envisaged: Image analysis from drones and fish population analysis. As a matter of fact, the presence of inconsistent, incomplete, inaccurate or uncertain data may not only hamper problem modeling and solving, but also the process of explaining the solutions. More theoretical approaches, on the other hand, have provided graphical tools for principled knowledge representation and reasoning that are much more transparent than opaque real-world AI applications. Indeed, graphical models such as Bayesian networks, knowledge graphs and ontologies have long been used to facilitate the representation of and the reasoning with imperfect data. By providing a visual dimension, they contribute to increasing the understanding of the problem, and thus help practitioners, users (lay and expert) as well as engineers in designing solutions that improve trust, efficiency and transparency. The GRID workshop aims at bringing the applied and the theoretical approaches together for the benefit of both. Real-world applications can gain in explainability through the use of graphical models, while addressing the intrinsic challenges of poor quality data can improve the understanding and use of graphical models. Small workshops are often organised around one unifying theme, be it a methodological theme or a challenge. We here focus on both a methodological theme and a challenge. Our approach will bring together 1) a variety of methods drawing on graphical representation and 2) a variety of application domains dealing with different aspects of imperfect data. The varieties generate the necessary distance between approaches to provide opportunities for cross-pollination, while similarities of methods and domains make for a sufficient closeness guaranteeing mutual relevance. Dear SIPTiAns and IP enthusiasts, We are delighted to announce our sixth SIPTA online seminar on imprecise probabilities (IP), and the first of this new year. These monthly events are open to anyone interested in IP, and will be followed by a Q&A and open discussion. They also provide an occasion for the community to meet, keep in touch and exchange between in-person events. The sixth seminar will take place on the 13th of January (Friday), at 3pm Paris Time. We are very happy to have as our speakers Alice Cicirello, the founder and the Head of the Data, Vibration and Uncertainty Group at Tu Delft, Matthias Faes, Chair for Reliability Engineering at TU Dortmund, and Edoardo Pattelli, Professor in Risk and Uncertainty Quantification and the Head of the Centre for Intelligent Infrastructure at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, at Strathclyde University. All of them have made impressive contributions as to how one can deal with imprecision and uncertainty in various engineering problems, with a very rich expertise in both theoretical and applied problems. The conference has been held every year since 1985. The upcoming 39th edition (UAI 2023<https://auai.org/uai2023/>) will be an in-person conference with virtual elements taking place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA from 31 July to 4 August 2023. We invite papers that describe novel theory, methodology and applications related to artificial intelligence, machine learning and statistics. Special Issue of a Springer journal "Archive of Applied Mechanics" on Numerical analysis and design of structures including polymorphic uncertain data edited by Michael Kaliske, Technische Universitaet Dresden, Germany Vladik Kreinovich, The University of Texas at El Paso, USA Numerical simulation of structures is currently often characterized by deterministic methods. Deterministic models of the reality indicate preciseness and safety, while, on contrary all available data and information are characterized by various types of uncertainty (variability, imprecision, incompleteness), which cannot be neglected. Polymorphic uncertainty comprehends all of these types of uncertainty and their combinations. The main focus of the special issue is the presentation of methods for the numerical analysis and design of structures under consideration of polymorphic data uncertainty. Engineering solutions are characterized by inherent robustness and flexibility as essential features for a faultless life of structures under uncertain and changing conditions. Implementing these features in a system requires comprehensive consideration of uncertainty in the model parameters, in environmental and human imposed loads as well as other types of intrinsic and epistemic uncertainties. Numerical design of structures should be robust with respect to (spatial and time dependent) uncertainties inherently present in material characteristics, boundary conditions etc. This requires in turn a reliable numerical analysis, assessment and prediction of the lifecycle of structures, taking explicitly into account the effect of unavoidable uncertainties (limited or dubious information, human factors, subjectivity and experience, linguistic assessment, imprecise measurement, unclear physics etc.). Recent developments of numerical methods in the field of "real world" engineering problems, which include a comprehensive consideration of uncertainty and associated efficient analysis techniques are requested. Contributions regarding respective advanced methods, such as stochastic analysis, interval analysis, fuzzy analysis, polymorphic uncertainty quantification, surrogate modeling, multi-fidelity simulation and high performance computing are explicitly invited. Dear fellow Siptians, While we will be sending more detailed information after the holidays, I'd like to give a small update on the organisation of the upcoming ISIPTA. A few key points: -Our plenary speakers shall be Gert de Cooman (Ghent University), Marta Kwiatkowska (University of Oxford) and Michel Grabisch (University Paris I). -We shall also make a hommage to the late Terry Fine. -There shall be a poster award and an IJAR young researcher award. The award committees are Ruobin Gong, Alexander Erreygers, Davide Petturiti and Raul Pérez-Fernández (poster award) and Inés Couso, Denis Mauá and Paolo Vicig (IJAR award). Further details shall be given around February. -There will be 4 fellowships to support the attendance of young students, funded by Artificial Intelligence. Details will be given after acceptance of papers/poster abstracts. -The deadline for abstract submission is January 29 and of paper submission, February 5. Preference models are needed in decision-support systems such as web-based recommender systems, in digital assistants and chatbots, in automated problem solvers such as configurators, and in autonomous systems such as Mars rovers. Nearly all areas of artificial intelligence deal with choice situations and can thus benefit from computational methods for handling preferences while gaining new capabilities such as explainability and revisability of choices. Preference handling is also important for machine learning as preferences may guide learning behaviour and be subject of dedicated learning methods. Moreover, social choice methods are of key importance in computational domains such as multi-agent systems. Preferences are studied in many areas of artificial intelligence such as knowledge representation & reasoning, multi-agent systems, game theory, computational social choice, constraint satisfaction, logic programming and non-monotonic reasoning, decision making, decision-theoretic planning, and beyond. Preferences are inherently a multi-disciplinary topic, of interest to economists, computer scientists (including AI, databases, and human-computer interaction), operations researchers, mathematicians and more. Given the increasing importance of handling preferences and of AI methods in general, we are organizing a journal special issue focusing on the recent advances on preference handling and learning, be it through symbolic or numerical models. The Thirteenth International Symposium on Imprecise Probabilities: Theories and Applications (ISIPTA 2023) What if we told you that “There’s more to uncertainty than probabilities.” Curious? Then come to Oviedo, Spain, 11-14 July 2023, to attend the 13th edition of ISIPTA: the world’s main forum on imprecise probabilities. For more information, visit https://isipta23.sipta.org/. Not convinced yet? Then perhaps the following features can convince you: TOPIC: The symposium is open to contributions on all aspects of imprecise probabilities, including (but not limited to) sets of probability measures, partial preference orderings, game-theoretic probability, choice functions, interval probabilities, belief functions, Choquet capacities, comparative orderings, upper and lower expectations and possibility theory. CONCEPT: Each accepted contribution is presented and discussed in two separate sessions. Presentations are short and plenary. Detailed explanations and discussions are face-to-face relying on whichever medium you prefer, so as to favor interaction among participants (you can visit the SIPTA website for links to the previous editions of all ISIPTA conferences). WHY ATTEND? The conference is an excellent opportunity to learn about the latest developments in imprecise probability in a friendly and cooperative atmosphere where interaction and confrontation of ideas are the primary objectives. The conference will take place in Oviedo, the capital of Asturias, a region in the north of Spain familiarly referred to as the Natural Paradise. The aim of this interdisciplinary workshop is to bring together philosophers, probability theorists, logicians, artificial intelligence researchers, and psychologists to discuss selected problems in the broad domains of reasoning and uncertainty, including inferences about conditionals, inconsistency, and coherence, how to argue and make decisions rationally, and how to represent and manage uncertainty and incomplete knowledge. PhD student opportunity - Prognostics and Health Management solutions for Reliable Autonomous Systems

*Prognostics and Health Management solutions for* *Reliable Autonomous Systems* *Description* The revolution in robotics and autonomous systems (RAS) is unstoppable. The advance of autonomous system applications, such as autonomous transport [1, 2] and autonomous inspections [3], generate multiple benefits for the industry and society, including the improved driving security in autonomous transport, and improved reliability of critical and remote infrastructure through specialized robots and drones. However, the reliability assurance of RAS is a complex challenge, as it requires incorporating advanced intelligence that should evolve according to run-time operation [4]. The challenging yet exciting, operation context of RAS, hampers the reliability assurance of RAS, which decelerates the acceptance and everyday use of RAS. Different technological solutions have emerged to improve the design and reliability of RAS [5]. Most of the technological configurations include a combination of mechanical and electrical components, along with onboard software intelligence to adopt decisions without direct human intervention. In this context, using the ever-increasing prognostics and health management solutions, it is possible to develop a prognostics modelling approach for RAS health monitoring using reliability, machine learning, uncertainty modelling and optimization methods [6]. The project’s objective is to develop novel prognostics methods for RAS, which can accurately inform about the model’s confidence in the decisions in real-time and the way to mitigate the existing problem via optimization methods, and always, provide a worst-case estimate on its predictions by using a proper modelling and update of the different sources of uncertainty. In particular, the work will focus on the integration of uncertainties to make prognostic predictions robust, using concepts such as adversarial learning, combined with statistical learning and artificial intelligence methods. The models developed in this project will be validated with the data collected from industry partners that work with autonomous robots focusing on (i) autonomous remote inspections for renewable energy and (ii) automotive industry. The project will be developed in <https://www.mondragon.edu/en/home>Mondragon Unibertsitatea within the Electronics and Computer Science Department, in collaboration between the Data Analytics and Signal Processing and Communications groups. Throughout the thesis, the student will engage continuously with industry and stays at different universities and/or research centers will be pursued. Looking for test cases for imprecise/conditional probabilistic satisfiability/coherence checking

Dear SIPTA list, After having lain dormant, research on the CONEstrip algorithms [*] has awakened again. These algorithms are essentially meant for checking coherence of general sets of desirable gambles. This is very closely related to checking coherence of imprecise or conditional probability assessments and probabilistic satisfiability (PSAT). The classical CONEstrip algorithm assumes gambles are directly specified (as vectors); this corresponds to having an explicit description of the possibility space. The propositional CONEstrip algorithm assumes gambles are expressed as linear combinations of propositional sentences; this corresponds to specifying (imprecise/conditional) probabilities for events and relationships between events, but leaving the underlying possibility space implicit. A collaborator is working with my support on creating implementations and evaluating these. For the evaluation, we want to use realistic test cases. These are nontrivial to construct, certainly for the propositional context. Therefore, we are looking for such test cases. So I would like to ask you to send me any information you may have about existing test cases of this kind (or ones that are ‘close enough’). This can be in the form of pointers to papers with a description of one or more problems that may function as test cases or as pointers to files containing test cases encoded in some documented format. Examples concern the control of processes of various kinds and for various purposes, monitoring with sensors, smart sensing, system identification, decision-support and assistance systems, visualization methods, prediction schemes, the solution of classification problems, response surface approximations, the formulation of surrogate models, etc. The engineering application fields may comprise, for example, bioengineering with prostheses design and control, civil and mechanical engineering processes, systems and structures concerned with vehicles, aircraft or bridges, industrial and systems engineering with design and control of power systems, electrical and computer engineering with developments in robotics, etc. All kinds of approaches from the field of Computational Intelligence are welcome. As a part of the Symposium special attention is paid to sustainable engineering solutions to address current and future challenges of environmental changes and uncertainty. This includes developments dealing with climate change, environmental processes, disaster warning and management, infrastructure security, lifecycle analysis and design, etc. Events, disasters and issues under consideration may be natural such as earthquakes or tsunamis, man-made such as human failure or terrorist attacks, or a combination thereof including secondary effects such as failures in nuclear power plants, which may be critical for systems, the environment and the society. Feel free to contact the organizers for any further information about the UR’22 special track. ::: Submission ::: Papers are due by January 24, 2022 (abstracts by January 17, 2022). Submissions of all papers to FLAIRS-35 is done through the EasyChair conference system: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=flairs35 When submitting your paper, select the Uncertain Reasoning track. Double-blind reviewing is used for research papers, so submitted papers must not reveal authors identify (for example, use your paper ID from EasyChair instead of author name in your paper). Do NOT use a fake name for your EasyChair login; your EasyChair account information is hidden from reviewers. Authors should indicate the special track "Uncertain Reasoning" for submissions. There are three kinds of submissions: * full paper - a paper of high quality, which will be published in the proceedings (up to 6 pages) and will be presented by the author in a corresponding track (20 minute oral presentation); * short paper - a paper that shows some novelty and general interest, but is more preliminary or in the early stages of development, which also get published in the proceedings (up to 4 pages) and the author presents the work in a poster session; and * poster abstract, which will be published as abstract only (up to 250 words; please follow this format for the final camera-ready poster abstract) and the author presents the work in a poster session. Rejected full papers may still be accepted as short papers or poster abstracts, if reviewers found interest in the idea, but the paper quality was not sufficient to be published in full length. There will also be a separate abstract only submission for authors who want to submit just an abstract and present it in a poster session. For each accepted paper (full, short, or poster abstract), there must be an accompanying AUTHOR REGISTRATION. A single author may have up to a maximum of two papers per AUTHOR REGISTRATION. Author names may be changed or re-ordered after reviewing; however, for budgetary reasons, registration fees will be based on the details at the time of submission and review. The accepted papers in the track will be published in the proceedings of FLAIRS-35 published by the FloridaOJ. Authors are expected to make a reasonable effort to address reviewers’ comments prior to the submission of the camera ready paper. Where such expectations have been flouted, actions may be taken to preserve the quality of the conference and the expectations of conference goers. In order for a paper to be published in the proceedings, the paper must be accompanied by at least one AUTHOR REGISTRATION. It is also expected that for a full (i.e., maximum 6-page) paper, at least one of the authors will attend the conference to present the work.
