The University of Oxford is consistently ranked amongst the very best Computer Science departments in the world, for both teaching and research. We are committed to attracting the world’s most talented students and working with them to continue the success of the department. The topics for the studentships are open, but should relate to the interests of one of the Department’s research areas: Algorithms, Artificial Intelligence, Automated Verification, Computational Biology, Foundations, Logic & Structures, Information Systems, Machine Learning, Multi-Agent Systems, Programming Languages, Security, Semantics and Software Engineering. We also encourage applications in cross disciplinary areas such as Linguistics, Biology, Medicine and Quantum Foundations & Quantum Computation. The studentships are for three years and are open to students of any nationality. Each studentship will cover university and college fees with a stipend of at least £13,863 per year. Applicants are normally expected to have, or be predicted to achieve, a first-class or a strong upper second-class grade in either (i) a four-year undergraduate degree (with integrated masters) in a relevant subject (or equivalent international qualifications), or (ii) a three-year BSc/BA degree followed by excellent (distinction) performance in a master's degree in a relevant subject. *** apologies for cross-posting *** ====================================================================== ECSQARU 2015 CALL for Special Sessions Thirteenth European Conference on Symbolic and Quantitative Approaches to Reasoning with Uncertainty Proposal Deadline: 1st December Dates: July 15th-17th, 2015 Location: Compiègne, France ====================================================================== We invite proposals of special sessions for the next ECSQARU 2015, to be held during the conference. These special sessions can aim at fundamental, theoretical or practical issues regarding reasoning under uncertainty, in symbolic and quantitative settings. INSTRUCTIONS Submission of proposals should include: * the session title, * a short description of the session and its main topics, * the session relevance to the ECSQARU conference, * a list of organizers (at least 2), * a list of potential submissions (if possible). Each special session should contain at least four papers. Those having fewer than four accepted papers will potentially be canceled, with accepted papers moved either to regular sessions or, if appropriate, to related special sessions. The upper limit for papers authored by each organizer will be 25% (rounded up) of the overall number of accepted papers in the session. Proposals should be sent to ecsqaru2015(a)hds.utc.fr before the 1st December 2014 EVALUATION OF PROPOSALS Special session proposals will be evaluated based on the timeliness, uniqueness of the topic and qualifications of the proposers. The proposers are expected to have a PhD degree and have a good publication track record in the proposed area. After review, a decision on whether the proposal will be accepted will be sent to the proposers. However, it is possible that an accepted proposal will be combined with another one to avoid multiple special sessions covering a similar topic. Accepted special sessions will be listed on the conference website. A final decision will be made two weeks after the submission deadline. SUBMISSION AND REVIEWS FOR SPECIAL SESSION PAPERS Manuscripts intended for special sessions should be submitted through the general paper submission website as regular submissions. During submission, authors submitting to special sessions should check the corresponding category. Papers submitted to special sessions will undergo the same review and decision process as regular papers. Organizers will be consulted to propose potential reviewers. IMPORTANT DATES Special sessions proposals should be submitted before the 1st december 2014. Submission and decision dates are the same as regular submissions. Dear Friends in Imprecise Probability, Recently Alessio Benavoli and I have published a paper in Statistics, a journal from Taylor & Francis group; the paper is concerned with using prior near-ignorance in the multivariate exponential family. Apart from a certain pride and self-promotion, the other reason why I am writing this email to the list is to advertise the name of the journal to our community. As some of you will be aware, publishing an imprecise probability paper in a traditionally oriented statistical journal can be horribly tough; this is the case even if we use the traditional statistical language and take all the possible care to prevent criticism. I am thinking in particular of the papers that have the potential to affect the statistical practice rather than the purely theoretical papers. So to me it is good news that there exist some statistical journals (at least one) for which we are complete outsiders, that can eventually accept our papers. This is not to say that it will be easy, just possible. In fact in our case it has been quite difficult to convince the skeptical reviewers to make the paper go through. If you have had a good experience with some statistical journal of the above type, you could consider sharing such information through this list as well, so as we all can be aware about the possible venues (as opposed to the impossible ones) for our statistical papers. Dear Friends in Imprecise Probability, We have an opening for a researcher position at our imprecise probability group at IDSIA. Duties ------ The person hired on this position will evenly share her/his working time on two main activities: - basic research, aiming at publishing in highly rated journals and international conferences; and - applied research, by taking responsibility of cutting-edge projects in tight collaboration with companies. A cross-activity will be the search for funding opportunies of both basic and applied research. Requirements ------------ - This position is for a junior researcher (say <= 35 years). - Doctorate degree and master degree with top grades in mathematics, or physics, or engineering, or informatics, or statistics or other quantitative areas. - Excellent theoretical as well as applied knowledge of Bayesian networks and other graphical models (in particular of structure/parameter learning) and modern data mining algorithms (in particular for classification and clustering, but regression and time series are also desirable). These skills have to be backed up by a good record track of technical papers. - Excellent mathematical skills. - Excellent (software-engineer-level) programming skills (C, C++, Java), knowledge of operating systems (Unix, Linux, Mac, Windows) and development tools (e.g., Eclipse). - Good knowledge of specialized mathematical/statistical environments, such as MATLAB and R. - Good knowledge of computational complexity theory. (Soft skills) - Very good communication skills in spoken and written English. - Good knowledge of Italian or alternatively a commitment to learn it as soon as possible. - Ability to work in a team and in a collaborative environment. - Autonomy. Entering the 21st century, the trend of global warming is increasing (IPCC, 2013). As the climate gets warmer, various kinds of weather disasters gradually increase and result in more and more severe loss and impacts. According to the statistics of the International Committee for Disaster Reduction, meteorological disasters account for 75%-80% of all natural disasters, and the loss caused by meteorological disasters in the global world accounts for about 3%-6% of the world GDP in total. How to deal with the significant risk of meteorological disasters has become a major challenge faced by the international community today. Before the idea of meteorological disaster risk management appeared, mankind mainly defended to meteorological disasters passively. Then people started to set up the philosophy of active management to meteorological disasters and entered the stage of meteorological disasters risk management. Researches on meteorological disaster risk started since the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR) programme initiated by the UN in 1989. Its focus was to explore the mechanisms and measures to reduce the loss and the impact of a variety of natural and environmental disasters on human economy, society, resources and environment; to reveal the mechanism of the formation of disasters by evaluating the danger of hazards factors, the stability of the environment and the vulnerability of the hazard bearing body, etc., and to identify the driving forces of the disasters. In 2003, the first World Conference on Risk Analysis hosted by the International Society of Risk Analysis (SRA) emphasized the important change of disaster studies from disaster analysis to disaster risk analysis and disaster risk management, etc. Since then, the concept of risk entered into the field of meteorology, and the focus of research on meteorological disasters also shifted from meteorological disaster defence to meteorological disasters risk management. Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology is one of China's key universities with meteorology as the main discipline. The discipline of "Atmospheric Sciences" ranked first in the academic ranking organized by the Chinese Ministry of Education in 2013. The university has more than 1,500 full-time faculties including the Academician of Chinese Academy of Science, Professor Shi Guangyu. In recent years, one of the main directions of the university discipline development is "meteorological disaster forecasting, warning and assessment." In order to better make use of the advantages in terms of the university discipline, personnel, facilities and other conditions, to promote academic exchange and cooperation among researchers around the world in meteorological disaster risk management, the university intends to hold an International Conference on Risk Management of Meteorological Disasters in Nanjing on October 12-13. It aims at attracting contributions from both fields. Though there exist large, well-known conferences and workshops hosting contributions to any of these areas, SLSP is a more focused meeting where synergies between subdomains and people will hopefully happen. In SLSP 2014, significant room will be reserved to young scholars at the beginning of their career and particular focus will be put on methodology. VENUE: SLSP 2014 will take place in Grenoble, at the foot of the French Alps. SCOPE: The conference invites submissions discussing the employment of statistical methods (including machine learning) within language and speech processing.
