CALL FOR PAPERS 9th International Workshop on Uncertainty Reasoning for the Semantic Web http://c4i.gmu.edu/ursw/2013 In conjunction with the 12th International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC'13) Sydney, Australia October 21-22, 2013 >>>>> New paper submission deadline: 24th July, 2013 <<<<< ISWC is a major international forum for presenting visionary research on all aspects of the Semantic Web. The Uncertainty Reasoning for the Semantic Web (URSW) workshop at ISWC'13 is an exciting opportunity for collaboration and cross-fertilization between the uncertainty reasoning community and the Semantic Web / Linked Data community. Effective methods for reasoning under uncertainty are vital for realizing many aspects of the Semantic Web vision, but the ability of current-generation web technology to handle uncertainty remains extremely limited. Thus, there is a continuing demand for uncertainty reasoning technology among Semantic Web researchers and developers, and the URSW workshop creates a unique opening to bring together two communities with a clear commonality of interest but limited history of interaction. By capitalizing on this opportunity, URSW could spark dramatic progress toward realizing the Semantic Web vision. AUDIENCE The intended audience for this workshop includes the following: - Researchers in uncertainty reasoning technologies with interest in Semantic Web / Linked Data and Web-related technologies; - Semantic Web and Linked Data developers and researchers; - People in the knowledge representation community with interest in the Semantic Web / Linked Data; - Ontology researchers and ontological engineers; - Web services and cloud computing researchers and developers with interest in the Semantic Web / Linked Data. TOPIC LIST We intend to have an open discussion on any topic relevant to the general subject of uncertainty in the Semantic Web and Linked Data (including fuzzy theory, probability theory, and other approaches). Therefore, the following list should be just an initial guide: - Syntax and semantics for extensions to Semantic Web / Linked Data languages to enable representation of uncertainty; - Logical formalisms to support uncertainty in Semantic Web / Linked Data languages; - Probability theory as a means of assessing the likelihood that terms in different ontologies refer to the same or similar concepts; - Architectures for applying plausible reasoning to the problem of ontology mapping; - Using fuzzy approaches to deal with imprecise concepts within ontologies; - The concept of a probabilistic ontology and its relevance to the Semantic Web; - Best practices for representing uncertain, incomplete, ambiguous, or controversial information in the Semantic Web / Linked Data; - The role of uncertainty as it relates to web services and cloud computing; - Interface protocols with support for uncertainty as a means to improve interoperability among web services; - Uncertainty reasoning techniques applied to trust issues in the Semantic Web and Linked Data; - Existing implementations of uncertainty reasoning tools in the context of the Semantic Web and Linked Data; - Issues and techniques for integrating tools for representing and reasoning with uncertainty; - The future of uncertainty reasoning for the Semantic Web and Linked Data. IMPORTANT DATES >>> July 24, 2013 (updated!): Paper submissions due <<< August 9: Paper acceptance notification August 31: Camera-ready papers due October 21-22: 9th Workshop on Uncertainty Reasoning for the Semantic Web SUBMISSION DETAILS The URSW workshop will be accepting submissions of technical papers and position papers. Each submission will be evaluated for acceptability by at least three members of the Program Committee. Decisions about acceptance will be based on relevance to the above topic list, originality, potential significance, topicality and clarity. Since all accepted papers will be presented at the workshop, we require that at least one of the submitting authors must be a registered participant at the ISWC 2013 Conference, and committed to attend the URSW workshop. Submissions to the workshop are only accepted in electronic format and should be sent via the workshop’s submission site: https://www.easychair.org/account/signin.cgi?conf=ursw2013. Papers must be formatted in the style of the Springer Publications format for Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS). This is the very same format adopted by the ISWC 2013. For complete details, see Springer’s Author Instructions (http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0) Technical papers submitted to the URSW workshop must not exceed 12 pages, including figures and references. Submissions exceeding this limit will not be reviewed. Position papers consist of a summary of ideas, projects, or any research efforts that are relevant to the URSW workshop and must not exceed 4 pages. Following the general acceptance rules of the ISWC 2013 conference, papers that, at the time of submission, are under review for or have already been published in or accepted for publication in a journal or another conference will not be accepted to the URSW workshop. PRESENTATION AND PUBLICATION URSW 2013 will be a half-day workshop. All papers accepted for URSW will be presented during the workshop and published in the workshop proceedings. Authors of accepted technical papers will have 20 minutes to present their work, while authors of accepted position papers will have a 10-minute slot to share their ideas. After each presentation, 5 minutes will be allocated to questions from the audience. Both technical and position papers will be published in the URSW workshop proceedings, to be available after the ISWC 2013 Conference. In addition, extended and revised versions of selected technical papers presented at URSW 2013 will be eligible for participating in an international journal special issue or in a post-proceedings book. Apologies for possible multiple posts ============================ CALL FOR PAPERS ============================ 2nd International Workshop on Recommender Systems meet Big Data & Semantic Technologies - SeRSy 2013 in conjunction with RecSys 2013, Hong Kong, October 12-16, 2013 http://sisinflab.poliba.it/sersy2013/ http://recsys.acm.org/recsys13/sersy/ MOTIVATION ---------- Recommendation techniques generally rely on data referring to three kinds of objects: users, items and their relations. The widespread success of Semantic Web techniques, creating a Web of interoperable and machine readable data, offers novel strategies to represent data that might improve the current state of the art of recommender systems, in order to move towards a new generation of recommender systems which fully understand the items they deal with. Indeed, more and more semantic data are published following the Linked Data principles, that enable to set up links between objects in different data sources, by connecting information in a single global data space - the Web of Data. Today, Web of Data includes different types of knowledge represented in a homogeneous form - sedimentary one (encyclopedic, cultural, linguistic, common-sense and real-time one (news, data streams. This data might be useful to interlink diverse information about users, items, and their relations and implement reasoning mechanisms that can support and improve the recommendation process. The challenge is to investigate whether and how this large amount of wide-coverage and linked semantic knowledge can significantly improve complex search and filtering tasks that cannot be solved merely through a straightforward matching of queries (or user profiles) and items. Such tasks involve finding information from large document collections, categorizing and understanding that information, and producing some output, such as an actionable decision. Examples of such tasks include understanding a health problem in order to make a medical decision, or simply deciding which laptop to buy. Recommender systems support users exactly in those complex tasks. WPMSIIP 2013 (5-10 Sept 2013, Lugano, Switzerland) Sixth Workshop on Principles and Methods of Statistical Inference with Interval Probability http://ipg.idsia.ch/wpmsiip2013 Dear friends and colleagues, The Imprecise Probability Group (ipg.idsia.ch) at the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA) organizes a workshop on principles and methods of statistical inference with interval (and more generally imprecise) probability. This workshop is a follow-up to five earlier WPMSIIPs held in Durham (2008, 2010), Munich (2009, 2012), and Ljubljana (2011). The workshop runs from Thursday the 5th of September until Tuesday the 10th of September 2013. Each of the five workdays of the workshop will start at 9am and will be focused on a specific topic. On Sunday the 8th of September a walking tour in the mountain area around Lugano is planned. The major aim of the workshop is to stimulate discussion on ongoing research, therefore especially the afternoons are structured very informally. Everyone, including PhD students, is welcome to participate and/or to present their views on one or more of the covered topics, on one or more days! PhD studentship in robust learning of Bayesian networks The Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA, http://www.idsia.ch) a non-profit oriented research institute for artificial intelligence, affiliated with both University of Lugano and University of Applied Sciences of Southern Switzerland, advertises a full-time position as PhD student in the area of robust learning of Bayesian networks. The position is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. IDSIA offers an international working environment (English is the official language), the possibility of attending conferences and a salary in line with Swiss standards. The work will be performed in close collaboration with experts in probabilistic graphical models, robust learning, data mining, optimization, imprecise probabilities (see http://ipg.idsia.ch for more information). It includes theoretical advances in robust structure learning of probabilistic graphical models, as well as design and development of algorithms. The ideal candidate has a strong commitment to research and to the completion of the PhD program, has obtained a Master degree in a quantitative area, has very good communication skills in English, good programming skills, and ability to work in a collaborative environment. (Where with 'imprecise probabilistic', I mean to restrict attention to things based on and interpreted as sets of probabilities or gambles, so, e.g., belief functions are out of scope.) The theory of belief functions also referred to as evidence theory or Dempster-Shafer theory, was first introduced by Arthur P. Dempster in the context of statistical inference, and was later developed by Glenn Shafer as a general framework for modeling epistemic uncertainty. These early contributions have been the starting points of many important developments, including the Transferable Belief Model and the Theory of Hints. The theory of belief functions is now well established as a general framework for reasoning with uncertainty, and has well understood connections to other frameworks such as probability, possibility and imprecise probability theories. This theoretical framework has a broad field of application, including information fusion, pattern recognition, auditing, etc. The second BFAS spring school will take place at IHEC in the historical and magnificent city of Carthage in Tunisia. The aim of this spring school is to promote this theory and to introduce interested students and researchers to the basics of belief functions, both theoretical and applied. The school is organized into several lectures given by international experts. They will bring both theoretical and practical backgrounds, in a friendly environment favoring interaction between participants. The workshop will run from Monday 18 March until Thursday 21 March 2013. Key to solving many large industrial scale problems is assimilation of data along with real-time simulation of a physical system, combined with uncertainty quantification to allow risk-informed decisions to be made. Often these systems are highly non-linear and require vast computing power, which presents a serious challenge to assimilation of data in real-time, and to quantify uncertainty bounds resulting from model uncertainty and measurement error. A major aim of SIMRIDE is to facilitate the link between industry and academia. The workshop will consist of talks by people from both camps, with ample time for discussion in a relaxed environment. This workshop is a follow-up to five earlier WPMSIIPs held in Durham (2008, 2010), Munich (2009, 2012), and Ljubljana (2011). The workshop runs from Thursday the 5th of September until Tuesday the 10th of September 2013. Each of the five workdays of the workshop will start at 9am and will be focused on a specific topic. On Sunday the 8th of September a walking tour in the mountain area around Lugano is planned. If so, you are invited to participate in DAGGRE, a research project sponsored by the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA), part of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. Research has shown that groups tend to do better than most individuals, and that you can be pretty accurate in many cases by simply averaging everyone's opinion (the "wisdom of the crowds" effect). Our goal is to improve on this averaging strategy to dramatically enhance the accuracy, precision and timeliness in crowdsourced forecasts of strategic interest. DAGGRE uses a combinatorial prediction market to aggregate information from large numbers of participants to arrive at a market consensus forecast. The market is essentially set up as a game, where events are listed for you to make estimates of their probability. You gain or lose points depending on how close your prediction is to the final resolution. The current market probability reflects the market consensus of the likelihood that the event will happen. When the truth is revealed (i.e., the event happens or the expiration date arrives without the event happening), participants gain or lose points based on the forecasts they made. Many historians agree that the archipelago was discovered in 1629 by English Puritans and Jamaican woodcutters and was then conquered by the Spanish in the second half of the 17th century. For two hundred years the English, Dutch, French and Spanish disputed ownership. During that same period, the famous English pirate Henry Morgan used San Andres as his base of operations and according to legends, as a hideaway for his much acclaimed treasure. A small mountain range, covered with coconut palms which rises to an elevation of 55 meters, crosses San Andres running north to south. The eastern shore is made of limestone deposits and white clay covered in part by coral sand carried in by the waves. The topsoil is thin and of a dark reddish color with frequent outcroppings of coral rock. The coral formation of San Andres, and particularly the reefs along the eastern shore, gives the sea an unbelievably beautiful array of colors. The climate is stable the year around. The meetings are held in Shonan Village Center (near Tokyo), which offers a combination of facilities for conferences, trainings, lodging in a resort-like setting. The friendly and open atmosphere is to promote a culture of communication and exchange among the meeting participants. The NII International Meetings are managed by National Institute of Informatics (NII) in Japan. (2) Scope and Style NII Shonan Meetings follow the style of the Dagstuhl Seminars. A meeting usually lasts for four days (Monday to Thursday) or shorter. It is initiated by at most three organizers (one from Asia), established leaders in their field, representing the different communities invited to the Seminar, preferably from different institutions. NII invites on their behalf about 25 to 35 researchers of international standing from academia and industry. Like Dagstuhl Seminars, an NII Shonan Meeting typically does not come with a fixed program. Instead, the pace and the program are guided by topics and presentations that evolve through discussions. In particular, NII does not require participants to submit a paper for presentation, or to give a presentation at all. On the contrary, NII encourages to present new ideas and work in progress. All administrate work of a meeting will be supported by the NII team in the preparation phase and during the seminars themselves, so that the organizers can focus on choosing research topics and selecting active researchers for the meeting. (3) Proposal Submissions NII invites international standing scientists to submit proposals for international meetings (with about 25-35 participants) on any topics of informatics. The workshop will run from Monday 18 March until Thursday 21 March 2013. Key to solving many large industrial scale problems is assimilation of data along with real-time simulation of a physical system, combined with uncertainty quantification to allow risk-informed decisions to be made. Often these systems are highly non-linear and require vast computing power, which presents a serious challenge to assimilation of data in real-time, and to quantify uncertainty bounds resulting from model uncertainty and measurement error. A major aim of SIMRIDE is to facilitate the link between industry and academia. The workshop will consist of talks by people from both camps, with ample time for discussion in a relaxed environment.
